Tinashe’s anthem for broke bitches and hustlers “Who Am I Working For?” gets a video

Tinashe Who Am I Working For

Tinashe’s self-released Reverie mixtape was one last year’s best urban releases. When a newcomer like Tinashe can slay major label chicks like Rihanna, Beyonce, and Ciara with nothing more than a mixtape, then you know that she is truly ~DAT*BITCH~.

I figured that Tinashe was done promoting Reverie so she could focus on recording her debut album, but she surprised me today with the release of a video for her moody hustlers anthem, “Who Am I Working For?.

When I first heard this song on Reverie, I pegged it as some kind of twisted sex jam due its warped production and eerily sensual vocal delivery. Once I finally paid attention to the lyrics, I realized that “Who Am I Working For?” is actually about Tinashe’s personal struggle to get her career off the ground and the stress that comes with pursuing your dreams as the bills start stacking up.

The music video was shot on a shoestring budget by Tinashe herself, but I still prefer it to a lot of the bigger pop videos that have been coming out lately. Mostly because, not only does she dance and do choreography in the clip, but she actually does it with some real skill. The utter basicness of Western pop star’s choreography infuriates me to no end, so seeing a chick like Tinashe come into the game and really dance, look good, and produce fresh and interesting music is like a gift from Jesus himself.

This isn’t the greatest, but anything that sheds light on her music is good. That mixtape was better than most albums.

In other mixtape news, Proph, I can’t believe you’re not all over the release date of Rock-a-Bye Baby! It’s actually happening?!

Everytime I hear a Tinashe song I really want to like it but I hardly ever do… The only song I fell in love with by her is This Feeling.

I really appreciate & admire her hustle. The dedication to her work is so clear to me and she has so much talent. That being said, I’m still not even close to being over “Ecstasy” so I haven’t really been glued to her other tracks.

You’r absolutely right Proph! Her mixtape is quite impressive and better than most major releases. I wonder what’s going on with her career though. Is there something that I don’t know about Tinashe? She seems easy to market and she can really sing. Why has no label picked her up yet after all this time?

Someone /has/ picked her up. She’s signed to RCA at the moment.

    Love this song! Hot hot

It’s funny that I watched (=skipped through) the Kelly Rowland video mere seconds before watching this… and this is SO MUCH better, LOL! If that’s not a “wig snatch”, I don’t know what is.
