The Grace’s Dana & Sunday debut with “One More Chance”; The female TVXQ?

When most people think of SM Entertainment’s girl groups, SNSD and f(x) are usually the first things that come to mind, but SM actually have a third group on their roster — CSJH The Grace. The quartet formed in 2005 and were moderately successful in South Korea and Japan for a couple of years, but they haven’t been active since 2009 after one of the members sustained a back injury.

It looked like The Grace had been forgotten about until a week ago, when SM unexpectedly announced that the group would be returning as a duo sub-unit named Dana & Sunday. After releasing some teaser photos and trailers, the newly-formed pair made their official comeback tonight with the premiere of their new single and music video “One More Chance”.

The song sounds like a less quirky version of something f(x) might do, with a steady Pitbull-esque beat and a lot of urban-infused electronica. And just like f(x), it takes a few listen to really absorb the addictive qualities of the song. It’s a good track for the pair to come back with because it’s very chart-friendly and current, while still containing a very ‘SM’ sound.

“One More Chance” also has more of a mature edge than say, “Mr. Taxi” or “Gee”, with SM actually marketing Dana & Sunday as young women and not cute little girls like you often see in K-Pop. Their grown-up look can be seen in the music video, which has the pair rocking a variety of styles that are sexy but sophisticated, and edgy but also classy. The video as a whole looks slick and expensive, and while it still has SM’s usual shtick of indoor choreography in front of fancy sets, there’s some more variety, with scenes of a press conference, a shopping trip, and a dance off in front of a Lamborghini. There’s even some humor when Sunday (lookin’ like Koda Kumi up in this bitch) trips on her high heels.

I couldn’t really tell if there was supposed to be an actual plot or not, but if there was, I didn’t get it.

Check out the MV below.

In addition to dropping the “One More Chance” MV, Dana & Sunday made their live performance comeback on tonight’s Music Bank.

During their active years, The Grace were always lauded for their talent and considered one of the best female vocalist groups, which is probably what stopped SM from dropping them during their extended hiatus. Staying true to their talents, Dana & Sunday really brought their A-game to Music Bank’s stage, singing almost their entire song live with continuous choreography and a minimal use of the backing track. This really allowed their vocals to shine, and both ladies showed expert control by actively dancing without sounding pitchy or off key. If any negatives had to be pointed out, it’d probably be that they weren’t always in sync with their movements, but that’ll improve with a couple more performances.

From watching Dana & Sunday on stage, you can really tell that SM are pushing them as the female TVXQ. Both acts are now duos who came from a group; they both have mature images; and both are highly-skilled vocalists and dancers. Dana & Sunday do seem to lack the spine-tingling stage presence of TVXQ though, and “One More Chance” is hardly as epic as anything Yunho and Max have done since joining forces, but it’s still a really strong comeback when compared to most other acts.

Are Dana & Sunday going to be strong enough to carve out a successful career, though? They’ll sell initially because they’re from SM Entertainment, but SM’s sales expectations are high, and there’s gonna be extra pressure on the pair to deliver after f(x)’s enormously successful Pinocchio promotions.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how they fare on the charts and music programs.

Anyway, According to SM, The Grace will actually return as a quartet in the future once the other two members finish up their current individual activities. I’m not sure if that’s actually true or if SM just wanted play Mr. Diplomatic to calm The Grace’s stans over Dana & Sunday’s debut as a sub-unit, but if it is then at least Brown Eyed Girls will finally have some real vocal competition for once.

Check out Dana & Sunday’s live performance below.

    I thought the same thing!

I love everything about them! The fashion is on point, the choreography is smooth, & the song is catchy. I also appreciate the little moments of humor which sets the mv apart from your normal pose & dance vids.

I can definitely see them improving live in a very short amount of time.

    Me too!

i was underwhelmed, its such an odd little song to me.  they are great live but idk the onstage oomph that I was expecting was missing.

I think its weak. I was excited that one of the older K-pop groups were coming back and they have high expectations (being an established group plus being on SM). CSGH have huge reputations in performing, dancing and singing and the sub-unit thing with Dana and Sunday just seems tacky coming from a group of their status.

I dont think it does the girls any justice at all.

It used to be CSGH, Fin.kL, Jewelry (with Seo In Young and Park Jung Ah), Baby VOX and SES as the premier girl groups of that era. For them to make comebacks now with all the new crowd they have big expectations.

Maybe when they comeback as a the full group they get material that is better suited to them.

@thepropetblog… i know u kinda new to kpop but CSJH  debuted as the female TVXQ you should look up some of their older stuff like “the club” and the japanese version of “boomerang” since the korean version isnt all that

Yeah I know, I did a bunch of research on them since they announced their comeback, but I was talking more from HoMin perspective but many of the ppl who read this site wouldnt know what HoMin is so it was easier to just say TVXQ.

BEG’s competitor in vocals? Not really. Face it Proph, BEG never sounded that good live.

I wish they will never come back as 4 members. I kinda like it like this (like TVXQ now).

BEG are AMAZING singers! They just didn’t show off their voices during Sound-G promotions, but their older stuff is very vocal based.

They didn’t dance. Of course they sounded THAT good. Still, I love them no matter what.

And btw, this whole TVXQ/CSJH things really take me to the next level of Kpop view. Now I’m feeling that group like 4Minute, Apink, T-ara, etc are TRASHES. If you can’t sing and dance well, then don’t! LOL.

Whenever I start to think that Idols like T-ara aren’t good performers, I just think of pop performers from America and Europe and then I’m reminded how t-ara, 4minute etc are when compared to the lazy talentless filth in Europe and America.

T-ara just seem bad because you have artists like TVXQ who are the greatest performers in the world, so everything looks bad when compared to them lol!

HoMin make Beyonce and Pink look like Katy Perry by comparison!

  • You_May_Hug_Me_Twice

Baby vox got me into kpop
Before the NEW baby vox came…

  • Pretty Little Liars

If you think TVXQ is the greatest performers in  the world (or at least in the Kpop scene), then you’re wrong.

There is another artist that is greater than them named TVXQ. Yup, but as 5 members. I saw them first back in 2008 at SBS Gayo Dajeun. They were soooooooooo epic! Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3d1sXsJLNO4&feature=related

And since you’re replying my comment, I wanna ask you. Have checked Agnes Monica whom I recommended to you out? She’s working with some American producers like Timbaland, Wizz Dumb, Team Sebastian, etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7ZXms8QohI

Baby VOX spawned 2 further girl groups; you had Baby VOX Re.V for just under 2years then they split and now you got Rania.

One thing that killed off Baby VOX Re.V was they had the really tall girl in it. She was good but whoever styled those girls should know dont put short clothes on tall girls when all the other girls are far shorter. She will stand out like dogs balls. She also did not look Asian either, she looked American.

It goes Baby VOX, Baby VOX Re.V and Rania is the latest version. Some of the Rania girls came from Baby VOX Re.V when the group started falling apart.

Prophet you seen the Chinese version of BEG’s Abracadabra? Jolin Tsai’s ‘Honey Trap’

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no0xAVcMl9M

Its a darker more sexier version of Abracadabra

  • Anonymous

Haha yeah I have seen it, she’s one of the few C-Pop stars I know.

She WISHES she was as good as Abracadabra haha. But the song is hot I love it, even tho it’s cheap
