Christina Milian and The-Dream split — What does this mean for Elope?
Posted in News on July 12th, 2010 by The Prophet
In case you haven’t heard by now, singer-actress Christina Milian and super songwriter The-Dream have ended their marriage after only three months.
The pair first got hitched in a quickie Vegas ceremony back in September, but The-Dream’s rep has now confirmed that they’ve been separated since late 2009 — meaning they had officially split before Milian even popped out their first child Violet in February.
“Terius ‘The Dream’ Nash is saddened to announce that his marriage to Christina Milian was unsuccessful,” his rep told E! News.
“The couple reached this decision in late 2009, but decided to keep the news private in efforts to protect their baby daughter, Violet. They ask for consideration and respect for their family moving forward.”
That’s all well and good, but what does this mean for Christina’s serially-delayed fourth album Elope? The story of Elope is a long and tangled one, but I’ll try to give you the Readers Digest version.
After being dropped from Def Jam and taking some time out of the spotlight, Christina inked a new deal with MySpace Records in 2008 and begun recording a new album (which was then called ‘Dream in Color‘). One of the collaborators booked for the project were duo The-Dream & Tricky, and after a few recording sessions, Christina and The-Dream started up a romantic relationship.
After a flop single with MySpace Records (“Us Against the World”) and a newfound romance, Christina ditched the struggling label and moved over to The-Dream’s own Radio Killa Records. She then scrapped the whole ‘Dream In Color‘ project, re-titled her new album ‘Elope‘ and got The-Dream & Tricky Stewart and Los Da Mystro to produce the entire thing.
After recording a host of new music with the threesome, Christina met with Interscope Records, and after a hugely successful Elope listening party, she inked herself a distribution deal for the album. The album was then put on hold when songs from the project kept leaking online, and was then further delayed when Christina got pregnant and eloped with The-Dream for a quick Vegas marriage.
At the time, the pair were so in love that their romance even seeped into their music, with Christina recording two songs that were rumored to be about their relationship: The title track “Elope” about their impending marriage, and the boppy 80s-throwback “Too New”, which detailed their whirlwind romance and the criticism they received for getting so serious so fast.
The honeymoon period obviously didn’t last long, and the couple have now been separated since late last year. One would assume that means no Elope, right? Well, according to Christina, that’s just not true, and just last month she tweeted that she was hitting the studio in July to finish up the album. The-Dream’s girl group Electrik Red also confirmed recently that the singer is happy and still in the studio recording.
The future of Elope all depends on the current relationship between The-Dream and Christina. As of now, she’s still (to our knowledge) signed with Radio Killa Records, and unless confirmed otherwise, still has her distribution deal with Interscope. Radio Killa may not be the biggest label in the game, but they have co-released The-Dream’s reasonably successful solo albums, as well as Electrik Red’s ‘How to be a Lady Vol. 1.’
Unfortunately, things aren’t looking too good between C-Milli and her Ex right now; He was just snapped romping on the beach with his personal assistant and rumored mistress, to which Christina re-tweeted a fan’s tweet which read: “I’ve officially lost my appetite”. That was then followed by a “Ugh” tweet from Christina herself.
The-Dream & Tricky are key to Christina’s Elope working. The current stack of leaks from the album were so good that people were even speculating that The-Dream was playing favorites and giving his girl all the best beats, and if you’ve heard the original recordings from the Dream in Color project, then you’d know how badly she needs her ex on board to make things work.
What are your thoughts on the future of Christina’s music career?
