Kelis selects “Scream” as third Flesh Tone single.

Posted in News on July 28th, 2010 by The Prophet

After the disappointing performance of “4th of July”, Kelis has selected the least liked song from her Flesh Tone album as her third single – “Scream”. It’s the second David Guetta produced track from Flesh Tone, after lead single “Acapella”.

What, no “Brave”? No “Emancipate”? Not even “Song for the Baby”? Booooo, bad choice!

Despite the disappointing single selection, Kelis has blessed her fans with some good news by announcing that she will bring her All Hearts tour to Europe. She’ll be performing a mixture of shows and festivals, hitting up the UK, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Austria and Belgium.

Remember, Kelis’ Flesh Tone album is in stores worldwide now. It debuted on the Billboard 200 earlier this month at #48 with just 8,000 copies sold, but has since fallen out of the top 200.

Kelis defends Miley Cyrus: “Get off her back. I know what she’s going through. Her video is brilliant!”

Posted in News on July 6th, 2010 by The Prophet

The highly-criticized Miley Cyrus has found an unlikely ally in Kelis, who has jumped to the 17-year-old’s defense in a new interview.

Chatting to Yahoo, Kelis warned people to get off Miley’s back when asked about what the “Can’t Be Tamed” singer has been going through lately, rolling out an impressive rant about artists’ verses popstars’ in the process.

“Somebody had said something to me about it, like, “Have you seen her new video?” and I was like, “Yeah, I actually think it’s great”. [they were like] “Yeah, but you know, that’s not who she is,” and I’m like, “Get over yourself!”. At the end of the day, her life is — and I don’t generally talk about other artists… — but people need to get off her back.

“It’s like, you live your life — especially as an artist — if you’re any good, your feelings are on your sleeve. That’s what I really appreciate about artists verses a popstar. A popstar, they always have to be good. I don’t want that responsibility. I’m not always good, sometimes I suck, but that’s OK because I’m human. I’m an artist, I’m expressing what I’m actually going through in my life. If I’m pissed off, if I’m happy, if I’m pregnant and emotional; whatever it is I’m dealing with, ‘screw you‘, because this is my life.

“My art and what I do is how I express what I’m dealing with right now. It doesn’t always have to be a number one hit – who gives a crap? That’s what it is, and I think for her [Miley], in particular, she’s a teenager, her whole life has been on blast because of what she does and she happens to be good at it. I think it’s kind of retarded when people are like, “Oh she’s trying to be this and she’s…”, who gives a crap!  This is what you do, who wasn’t like that at eighteen, nineteen? Cut her some slack. People forget that just because you are in the public eye they think you’re supposed to temper yourself…

“I saw the video [Can't Be Tamed] and I was like “wow”. I knew exactly what she was going through as I watched it. I thought it was a beautiful video, she looks great, I get exactly what she’s saying, she couldn’t have put it more clear; She’s in a cage. I get it, it’s great, I think it’s brilliant, good for her. I’m glad she did that. It’s her right.”

It’s about time someone came out to watch poor Miley’s back!

When it comes to stars like Miley Cyrus, people often let the drama and negativity of the celebrity gossip side of things cloud their judgement, and it turns into a bit of a witch hunt against whoever is the flavor of the moment. As long as the music and visuals are good, nobody is getting hurt and everybody is being honest, then it shouldn’t matter. She hasn’t even done anything bad either, which is what makes the whole thing so silly.

You can check the extensive interview for yourself below. Kelis reveals some really interesting details about recording Flesh Tone as an unsigned artist, the inspiration behind some of the sounds and songs and a lot more.

Kelis performs ’4th of July’ on the Today Show.

Posted in Performances on July 6th, 2010 by The Prophet

Kelis’Flesh Tone‘ album just dropped in the States this week, so the singer has headed back home for some US promo, kicking this off with a performances of her latest single “4th of July” on the Today show.

The song got off to a slow start in the US, but it finally cracked the Billboard club charts recently, and currently sits at #37 in it’s second week. I hoping that it gets a big boost when the next chart is released from downloads and airplay spurred by the actual the 4th of July holiday, but we’ll have to see. The same thing pretty much goes for the UK as well.

As of right now, the album is #13 on iTunes, which is better than what I was expecting.

Look out for some more appearances from Kelis in the coming days, but for now, check out the Today performance, below.

Kelis is just a ‘Carefree American’ on Flesh Tone bonus track.

Posted in New Music on July 3rd, 2010 by The Prophet

Kelis’ Flesh Tone album was released in the UK way back in May, but it’s only just coming up time for the album’s American release, which includes a special US bonus track “Carefree American”.

The Jean Baptise-produced song is a comment on American culture (surprise surprise), which Kelis explained to Rap-Up last December.

“It’s kinda like the back and forth between what we know that’s wrong with Americans and being in America, yet the things we love about it,” she continues, “and at the end of the day we don’t really sacrifice that much. I put myself in it as well; we are Americans and we like everything super-sized.”

“Carefree American” would’ve made a nice addition to Flesh Tone’s nine-song tracklisting, so it’s a bit of a shame that the rest of the world will miss out on it. The July 6 US release date of the album has obviously been timed in with the single “4th of July”, as well as the annual holiday itself, but I think Kelis could’ve benefited from putting all the different release dates a little closer together.

Take a listen to “Carefree American” below.

Kelis and Apl.de.ap blast off in Benny Benassi’s Spaceship.

Posted in Music Videos on June 29th, 2010 by The Prophet

Italian DJ Benny Benassi is back with a new single “Spaceship”, which features Kelis, Apl.de.ap from the Black Eyed Peas, and producer Jean Baptiste. You may remember Benassi from his 2003 hit “Satisfaction” (and its raunchy music video), and now after some time away from the pop charts, the DJ/Producer is hoping to work some of that Guetta magic with another crossover smash.

The music video for the song premiered earlier today. It follows Benassi and his cabin crew on an intergalactic adventure across space, exploring the cosmos before landing on a planet and deciding to party. Kelis then gets blasted off somewhere, Apl.de.ap starts flying around on a multi-colored bicycle, the planet starts blowing up and it all gets a little crazy.

Considering that the whole video was filmed on a green screen, they did a pretty great job. There’s some amazing 3D and lighting effects, plus it has Kelis, so it’s impossible for it to be bad.

Remember, Kelis’ Flesh Tone album will drop in America, Canada, and Australia on July 6th, and will contain the bonus track “Carefree American”.

Kelis performs “4th of July” on Leno.

Posted in Uncategorized on June 19th, 2010 by The Prophet

One of The Prophet Blog’s faves, Kelis, hit up the Jay Leno show this week to do some more US promotion for her Flesh Tone album and her latest single “4th of July (Fireworks)”.

The blue beauty performed the single on the show, delivering what was definitely one of her better vocal showings.

Flesh Tone doesn’t hit US stores until early next month, so hopefully “4th of July” can make some headway on the Billboard club charts before then.

Watch it below.

Kelis performs mini-concert at G-A-Y.

Posted in Performances on June 17th, 2010 by The Prophet

Back in May, Kelis was over in London for a series of promotional dates, one of which included a concert at the G-A-Y nightclub, which has now just surfaced online.

The mini-concert features the star performing her two Flesh Tone singles “Acapella” and “4th of July”, as well as “22nd Century” and “Brave”.

I’m so happy to see her finally performing “Brave” because it’s one of my favorites from Flesh Tone and I’ve love to see it possibly even get the single treatment at some point.

Watch all the action below.

Kelis lights up the sky in “4th of July (Fireworks)” music video

Posted in Music Videos on June 16th, 2010 by The Prophet

Kelis has just premiered the official music video for her new Flesh Tone single “4th of July (Fireworks)”.

The stylish video was co-directed by fashion photographer Rankin (Britney, Madonna, Kylie) as well as Kelis herself. The clip obviously isn’t working with a Lady GaGa-budget, but Kelis and Co do a wonderful job of creating a euphoric atmosphere by using fashion, lasers, lighting and some nifty camera work, combined with some great visual effects that use the elements of earth, wind, fire and water.

The whole clip concludes with a big bang with a series of colorful fireworks blasting off behind Kelis as she spins and twirls around in the desert, happily caught up in a joyful moment.

“Acapella” was still better though.

“4th of July” is currently available in the US, with the Flesh Tone album set to follow next month Stateside.

SNAPPED! Kelis – 4th of July music video.

Posted in News, Photoshoots on June 9th, 2010 by The Prophet

Here are some promo shots taken from the brand new Kelis music video “4th of July (Fireworks)”.

Kelis co-directed the clip with celebrity fashion photographer Rankin. It’s currently set to premiere on Vevo on Wednesday, July 16.

Two nights after the premiere she’ll hit up the Jay Leno show to perform the single for the first time in the States.

The “Acapella” video was pretty amazing, so I can’t wait to see what Kelis has in store for us this time around.

Kelis performs “4th of July” and reveals official single artwork!

Posted in Performances, Photoshoots on May 22nd, 2010 by The Prophet

Here’s the official artwork for “4th of July (Fireworks)”, the second single to be lifted from Kelis’ brand new album Flesh Tone.

The song is following up the lead single “Acapella”, which topped the US Billboard club charts and hit the top five in the UK.

“4th of July” has actually become my least favorite song from Flesh Tone, but I still hope it does well since the album as a whole is great.

You can check out a new performance of the single from Kelis’ appearance on Jools Holland last week.

OMFG: Kelis and Robyn announce joint ‘All Hearts’ tour!

Posted in News on May 20th, 2010 by The Prophet

In what is most probably the most defining moment in history (slight exaggeration), left-field pop dynamo’s Robyn and Kelis have announced that they’ll be going on a joint tour together in support of their respective new albums.

The ladies broke the news during a public conversation on Twitter, which Neon Limelight are speculating could have been a clever publicity ploy from their label’s, also mentioning that cities and dates for the tour will be announced soon.

Robyn: Hey mama, I´m bored. U feel like doing something?

Kelis: Love to. Thinking it’d be fun 2 hit the road together?

Robyn: That´s what I´M thinking. I got my strobes ready & some new dancing shoes as well. We could do this!

Kelis: GLORIOUS! I’ll bring the lasers, confetti. Let’s do it!

Robyn: So what are we calling this madness? My <3´s tellin me u got an idea?

Kelis: Lets call it “All Hearts.” What do you think?

Robyn: #allheartstour in the us. heartbrake on all four on top of a speaker in a shower of star dust and acid rain

Kelis: YES! #allheartstour

*shaking and crying with tears streaming*

*goes into cardiac arrest*

*dies and is reborn then dies again*

Robyn’s new album Body Talk Pt.1 will be out in June, while Kelis’s already internationally released Flesh Tone will drop in the States this July.

Kelis performs “Acapella” and “Sweet Dreams” live in the UK. Second single announced?

Posted in Performances on May 18th, 2010 by The Prophet

The lion lady otherwise known as Kelis is grinding hard over in the UK to promote her just released album Flesh Tone, performing the lead single “Acapella” on GMTV over the weekend.

Some more footage of the singers appearance on Jools Holland from last week has also surfaced, featuring a new interview about Flesh Tone as well as a piano led cover of the Eurythmics classic “Sweet Dreams”.

A second single from Flesh Tone has yet to be officially announced, but currently all signs are pointing directly to “4th of July (Fireworks)” after it was listed as a single on the albums promotional artwork and Kelis’ official website listed news of an upcoming performance for the track.

I think Flesh Tone is one of the albums where none of the songs actually sound like singles; they aren’t structured in your typical commercial way with huge catchy hooks and radio friendly beats, so for that reason I don’t really have a preference when it comes to future singles.

What do you want her to release?
