HOT 100: Katy, Ke$ha, Cudi and Chris! Oh My!

Posted in News on September 2nd, 2010 by The Prophet

Spurred on by the release of her sophomore album Teenage Dream, Katy Perry’s latest single, also titled “Teenage Dream”, received a surge in downloads this week, topping the digital songs chart with 259k copies, enough to certify it Platinum for total sales of over 1 million. However, Katy’s strong digital showing wasn’t enough to knock Eminem & Rihanna off the top of the Hot 100, who log in their seventh consecutive week at No. 1 with their airplay ruler “Love the Way You Lie”, leaving “Teenage Dream” settle for for No. 2.

The next most notable move on the Hot 100 comes from everybody’s favorite party girl Ke$ha, who cracks the top ten with her latest single “Take It Off”, moving 16-10 in it’s seventh week. This gives Ke$ha four consecutive top ten hits from her chart topping debut album Animal – five overall when including her feature on 3OH!3′s “My First Kiss”. This now means that every single Ke$ha has released or appeared on has gone top ten. We’ll see if she can continue her winning streak when her collaboration with Taio Cruz, “Dirty Picture”, goes to mainstream radio later this month.

Also making a splash is Kid Cudi, who debuts at an impressive No. 22 with his Kanye West-assisted single, “Erase Me”. The song has been at radio for nearly three weeks, but it’s debut was mainly due to a strong opening week on iTunes, with 99k copies sold. The No. 22 debut makes “Erase Me” Cudi’s second highest-charting single ever — featured or solo — since his 2008 debut, “Day ‘n’ Nite”.

Another interesting move on this week’s Billboard charts belongs to Chris Brown, who seems to be staging somewhat of a comeback with his new mixtape single, “Deuces”. The song reaches a new peak of No. 24 on the Hot 100, and comes in at an impressive No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart — his first R&B chart topper since 2007′s “Kiss Kiss”. He also topped the box office on the weekend with his new movie, Takers. He’s now planning to capitalize off his current popularity with a brand new Polow Da Don-produced single titled “Calypso”, which is rumored to be coming out soon.

What a positive week on the charts for everybody. Until next time, folks.

Ke$ha performs mini-concert on the Today Show.

Posted in Performances on August 13th, 2010 by The Prophet

Ke$hus Chri$t pulled herself away from Rihanna’s Last Girl On Earth Tour long enough this morning to perform a three-song set for the Today Show’s Concert Series.

The Holy dollar sign performed her two smash hits “TiK ToK” and “Your Love is My Drug”, as well as her latest single “Take It Off”. The latter is shaping up to be another huge hit for the new princess of pop, as it not only races up the airplay charts and iTunes, but also moved from 52-27 on this week’s Hot 100.

Between performances, Ke$ha squeezed in time to chat to host Matt Lauer, who clearly knew absolutely nothing about her and preceded to a flog a dead horse by asking her about breaking into Prince’s house and why she has a dollar sign in her name. Ke$ha should’ve clocked him in the jaw as punishment for such a lazy interview.

Anyway, you can check it all out below.

A word of warning: The “Your Love Is My Drug” performance is really good; the “Take It Off” performance is kinda bad. Oh, and don’t forget to take note of all the hilarious Ke$ha stans dancing and singing along in the audience. There’s this one gay guy… Well, you’ll see for yourself.

Ke$ha goes for glitter in “Take It Off” music video!

Posted in Music Videos on August 3rd, 2010 by The Prophet

She’s been unusually quiet for the past few weeks, but now chart conqueror Ke$ha is back with the official video for her latest single “Take It Off”. In the Paul Hunter-directed clip, Ke$ha’s penchant for glitter is out in full force as she and her friends (looking like they just stepped right of The Warriors) rock out in an abandoned pool, eventually partying themselves into a big, giant, glittery oblivion.

Supposedly it’s a lot deeper than that though. According to Ke$ha, there’s a hidden message behind all the glitter and tweaked out teenagers.

“It’s also about taking off your inhibitions and being raw and real,” Ke$ha said. “And then we start tearing each other apart into pieces, and we’re all made out of glittery magic dust … star dust.”

I liked the pretty colors.

After initially debuting at #85 on the Hot 100 during the release week of Ke$ha’s album Animal, “Take It Off” has just re-entered the charts #92. Expect to see it start rapidly climbing the charts soon though, as it’s currently #31 on iTunes and completely blowing up on radio, already reaching #27 (and rising) on the mediabase top forty airplay chart.

Let’s make this another consecutive top ten smash for Ke$ha!

Ke$ha talks sophomore album, her artistry and being taken seriously.

Posted in News on July 20th, 2010 by The Prophet

In a new interview with the Phoenix New Times Blog, Ke$ha has announced that she’s already started working on the follow-up to her chart topping debut Animal. On the new disc, she promises to show off a more mature side of herself, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to get rid of her trademark half-rap style.

“I am already working on my next record. I’m always constantly working on songs anyway. It’s going to be a reflection of whatever I’m going through. It’s not like I’m super-serious and never hang out anymore, but I definitely work hard. I’ve matured decades in the past 8 months.”

“I think so,” replies Ke$ha when asked if she will continue rapping as well as singing on her next album. “It just kind of started off as an ironic joke, the audacity of a silly little white girl with freckles rapping. I grew up being inspired a lot by the Beastie Boys, and I’m inspired by the success of “Tik Tok” to keep rapping. I’m a trained singer, though, so I definitely can sing and will continue to sing.”

She’s also hoping that people begin to take her a little more seriously as an artist, especially since, as she says, she writes her own songs and is a musician.

“I don’t really care about being taken seriously as a human being. I just think some people overlook the fact I wrote my entire record. It’s important for people to know that I take my artistry seriously; it just so happens that my job is to make people dance their pants off.

“I play guitar and drums and synth, and I dance, and sometimes I do cartwheels.”

And finally, Ke$ha has opened up about her upcoming music video for “Take it Off”, also revealing that she hopes to release more singles from Animal before the record is through.

“I love that song ["Take it Off"]. It’s one of the last songs I wrote on the record, and it’s inspired by going to a tranny bar. It’s about me and all my hot vampire babe friends breaking into a hotel on another planet, and at the end we all turn into this beautiful stardust. Once you take it all off, all your inhibitions, your clothes, we’re all made up of the same thing.

“I’m not sure if this is the last single. I hope to release a few more songs off this record.”

And there you have it. Singer, songwriter, musician, loves trannies, the Beasie Boys and cartwheels. What’s not to love? (haters don’t answer that).

With Ke$ha’s comments about future singles, I’m assuming that if “Take it Off” does well the record label will give her the green light for another single. What would you like to see her release? It’s about time that Ke$ha showed off a slightly different side of herself (like in “Your Love is My Drug” — a huge hit), so I’d say she should go with something like “Stephen”, “Hungover” or one of the other non-party tracks as the next single.

SNAPPED: Ke$ha gets down and dirty in “Take it Off” video.

Posted in Candids on July 6th, 2010 by The Prophet

Here’s the first official look at Ke$ha’s music video for her new single “Take It Off”. The clip is being directed by Paul Hunter, who’s previously shot video’s for Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani and Aaliyah.

In these newly released pictures, Ke$ha can be seen riding a motorbike, partying in some dirty, glittery sand, and most shocking of all – cleaning up and posing like a total babe in a faux fur coat.

Amazing. Amazing. Amazing.

All the singles from Animal have so far gone Platinum or multi-platinum, so I’m sure once “Take it Off” officially goes to radio, that it’ll be Ke$ha’s fourth hit.

Check out the rest of the video pics below (thanks Diego and K$UKST).

Ke$ha books Paul Hunter for “Take it Off” video. Hits back at her critics.

Posted in News on July 1st, 2010 by The Prophet

Ke$ha is gearing up to shoot the video for her latest Animal single “Take it Off” soon, and according to new reports she’s booked director Paul Hunter to shoot the official video.

If you’re a pop fan (you must be or you wouldn’t be here) then you’d know that Hunter is one of the biggest names in the music video biz, having previously directed clips for Aaliyah (“We Need a Resolution”), Christina Aguilera (“Come on Over”, “Lady Marmalade”), Michael Jackson (“You Rock My World”), Gwen Stefani (“Hollaback Girl”), Britney Spears (“Me Against the Music”), and Justin Timberlake (“My Love”, “Senorita”).

Besides prepping her latest music video, Ke$ha has also grown tired of constantly being called a drunken, talentless skank, and has hit back at her critics in a new interview with Denver’s Metromix.

“I’m responsible. I wouldn’t have a No. 1 record or song if I wasn’t a hardworking person.”

“People told me, ‘You shouldn’t be singing,’” she said. “I went through awkward, chubby, total weirdo phases. I was in a marching band. Did you ever think a little, fucking chubby, awkward girl with braces in the marching band would be No. 1 on top of the pop charts? No, you wouldn’t.”

“People will start to respect me as a writer,” she said. “Look at the charts, honey. … As annoying as you think I am, I’m not going anywhere, so you might as well get used to it.”

Oh great. Now that she told us to “look at the charts” she’s going to jinx everything and “Take It Off” will flop. Good move Ke$ha.

Ke$ha brings a touch of class to the MMVAs.

Posted in Performances on June 20th, 2010 by The Prophet

Queen Ke$ha brought some much needed class to the Much Music Video Awards in Canada today, strutting down the red carpet in her favorite pair of K-Mart pumps and carrying a mysterious magic voodoo stick – which she was probably planning on attacking Katy Perry with to get revenge for her stealing “TiK ToK” and turning it into “California Gurls”.

Speaking of “TiK ToK”, Ke$ha performed the wig snatching smash today for the one Somali exchange student in the audience who hadn’t already heard it fifty thousand times before.

Thankfully though, Ke$ha freshened up the performance by adding a few new bits & pieces – including crawling around on the ground and pretending to be an animal, then  being lifted into the air like Ke$hus Christ being carried to the glittery cross.

Ke$ha’s ready to ‘Take it Off’ for next single.

Posted in News on June 16th, 2010 by The Prophet

AOL Radio Blog have reported that party princess Ke$ha has selected the electro-thumper “Take It Off” as the fourth single from her smash album Animal.

Ke$ha and her producer Dr Luke were recently trying to decide between “Take it Off” and the slightly rockier revenge anthem “Kiss ‘n’ Tell” as the next song to release from the album, but it seems that the success “Take it Off” has had before even being delegated to single status has influenced the pair to choose it as Animal’s next hit.

“Take it Off” has already reached #85 on the Hot 100 during the Animal album release week, amassed 15 million plays on it’s official YouTube page and is her third highest played song on music social networking website Last.fm.

Meanwhile, Ke$ha’s current single “Your Love is My Drug”, is still having major success on the charts, sitting pretty in the top five of the Hot 100 and #1 on mediabase airplay.

Animal has now also sold upwards of 750k in the US alone, so another hit single could easily push it to Platinum status or beyond.

Ke$ha talks second album, possible collaboration with Rihanna.

Posted in News, Performances on June 7th, 2010 by The Prophet

Ke$ha’s still smashing the charts with her hit album Animal, but as you know the world of pop music moves fast, so it come as no surprise that the “TiK ToK” singer is already contemplating album number two.

“I will be [working on a second album]. Recently I woke up at like four in the morning in Tokyo with horrible jet lag, and I had this like awesome idea and wrote this like really stellar song, and I was like dancing around my room naked by myself at four in the morning in Tokyo.”

“There are people I’d love to work with obviously. I have a wish list. I wanna work with some classics, like a David Byrne, like a Robert Plant. I’m also like, mildly infatuated with Rihanna who I’m going on tour with and I’m so excited to get to just kick it with her for months, so maybe you’ll see something that comes out of our hang time.” [Source]

Somehow I doubt her label are going to be interested in any mature Robert Plant/David Byrne collaborations, but the Rihanna thing has probably already been discussed so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see that popping up at some stage.

That probably won’t be until next year though since Animal is only up to it’s third single, and Ke$ha hasn’t even begun recording the follow-up yet.

Now back to the present where Ke$ha is still promoting Animal, the singer performed her latest smash single “Your Love Is My Drug” this week on the 5 o’clock show in the UK.

Check it out below.

Dr. Luke talks next Ke$ha single: Take it Off or Kiss ‘n’ Tell?

Posted in News on June 4th, 2010 by The Prophet

The producer of Ke$ha’s chart topping debut album Animal, Dr. Luke, took to Twitter today to discuss the party girl’s next single, tweeting: “Take it Off” or “Kiss n Tell” for Kesha’s next single??? What do you think?”

“Take It Off” already debuted on the Hot 100 at #85 back in January due to high digital downloads during the release week of Animal, while “Kiss ‘n’ Tell” has also charted off downloads in the UK and Canada.

What do you think Ke$ha should choose as her next single? I want “Stephan” or “Backstabber”!

Meanwhile, Ke$ha’s current hit “Your Love Is My Drug” is continuing  to do extremely well. Not only has it cracked the top five of the Hot 100, but it’s also now the #1 song on radio according to mediabase.

Animal continues to sell strongly as well and has now reached 730k in the US alone.
