Drake premieres “Miss Me” music video.

Posted in Music Videos on August 19th, 2010 by The Prophet

Drake’s homosexual love affair with Anthony Mandler shows no signs of slowing down, with the Canadian rapper enlisting the director to shoot for him yet again, this time for his latest single “Miss Me” featuring Lil’ Wayne.

As usual, Mandler’s trademark moody lighting is on full display, but he’s also put in the effort to switch things up ever-s0-slightly with some fantastic slow-motion and rewind visual effects. However, many parts of the clip are too similar to Drake’s Mandler-directed video for “Over”, and it’s all getting a little tired now. Despite it’s unoriginality, “Miss Me” is still a job well done for the pair, but next time Drake is going to have to bring something a little fresher to the table.

Chartwise, “Miss Me” is currently #3 on both the R&B and Rap charts, and #49 on the Hot 100 (after originally debuting at #15). To date, Drake’s debut Thank Me Later has sold 970k in the US, and has been certified Platinum.

Drake says he’s already started working on his next album. Seriously.

Posted in News on July 14th, 2010 by The Prophet

A drunken Drake jumped on Twitter today to Tweet about his “new album”, which according to him, he’s already started working on. (Via Rap-Up).

Drake’s first album ‘Thank Me Later‘ has only been out for four weeks, but has already shifted an impressive 800k in the US alone. It’s already spawned two hit singles — “Over” and “Find Your Love” — with a third “Miss Me” out now, and possibly a fourth in “Fancy”, which Swizz Beatz tweeted about shooting a video for recently.

I guess taking time in between your music to get inspired and creative is a thing of the past in today’s fickle market. But hey, Prince records music 24/7 without a break, and he’s a genius.

What do you think about the possibility of Drake having already started working on a new album?

Drake selects “Fancy” as next Thank Me Later single.

Posted in News on July 13th, 2010 by The Prophet

It looks like Canadian chart topper Drake has selected “Fancy” (oh you Fancy, huh?) as the fourth official single from his Gold-certified debut album Thank Me Later.

The tea was spilled when Swizz Beatz – the producer and featured artist on “Fancy” — started tweeting about the song’s music video, which is due to be shot this week.

“Fancy” also features T.I. and is one of the best cuts from Drake’s ridiculously-hyped debut. It’ll follow up the top five smash “Find Your Love”, and the current single “Miss Me” with Lil’ Wayne. At the moment, “Fancy” is climbing the R&B charts, and already sits at #53.

Sounds like a future hit.

Drake finds love on Leno.

Posted in Performances on June 24th, 2010 by The Prophet

Drake appeared on the Jay Leno show tonight to perform his hit single “Find Your Love”. Unfortunately, Drake decided to ditch the autotune and let his raw vocals do the singing, which probably wasn’t the best idea.

Meanwhile, the new Hot 100 was released today, and “Find Your Love” has bounded from 10-5, giving Drake the third top five hit of his career. Plus, you already know that his ‘Thank Me Later‘ album has been a huge success, topping the Billboard charts this week with 447k sold.

Check out the performance below.

Drake debuts big as Christina slides out of the top ten.

Posted in News on June 22nd, 2010 by The Prophet

This weeks album numbers are now in from Hits Double Daily and rapper Drake is right at the top, pushing 463k of his debut album ‘Thank Me Later’.

Drake’s impressive numbers give him the highest first-week sales for a rap album since Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3, and overall the third biggest opener of 2010, behind only Sade (502k) and Lady Antebellum (481k).

Speaking of Lady Antebellum, the country trio have now moved well over 2.1 million copies of their debut album ‘Need You Now’ since it’s release in late January. Very impressive indeed!

However, somebody who isn’t having as much luck as Drake and Lady A is Christina Aguilera, who according to HDD, is set to drop from 3-11 this week with her album ‘Bionic’, selling 36k in it’s second week out.

Is there anything she can do at this point to stabilize her sales?

Drake performs “Over” at the MMVAs.

Posted in Performances on June 21st, 2010 by The Prophet

Drake and his new girlfriend struck a pose on the red carpet today for the Much Music Video Awards in Canada.

After some major technical drama (that I elaborated on in my Miley Cyrus post), the rapper managed to get himself together long enough to perform his hit single “Over”.

Apparently, Drake was the only artist from the show’s star-studded line up who didn’t get to rehearse his performance. He supposedly just couldn’t find the time since he’s been booked solid with promotional duties surrounding his just released debut album, ‘Thank Me Later‘.

Anyway, check out the performance below.

Drake’s ‘Thank Me Later’ sales projections top 475k… Christina’s ‘Bionic’ bombs.

Posted in News on June 16th, 2010 by The Prophet

It looks like it boy Drake will actually be able to meet the hype surrounding his debut album Thank Me Later, with Billboard today predicting that the LP could top upwards of 475k in it’s first week out.

Drake’s debut full-length studio album “Thank Me Later,” which was released on Tuesday (June 15), is projected to sell in the range of 425,000 to 475,000 — if not more — by week’s end on June 20. If it moves as much as sources think, it’ll mark one of the biggest sales weeks of the year for a single album.

The huge sales are most probably being spurred by the huge success Drake is currently having on the Hot 100; “Find Your Love” is #13, “Miss Me” is #15 and “Over” is #21 (and #1 on the Rap chart).

The Drake hype doesn’t die there either, after police today were forced to cancel a scheduled free concert that the rapper and pop group Hanson were holding in NYC, due to a violent riot that broke out amongst the 25,000 fans in attendance.

While things are all smiles and sunshine in Drake’s world, things aren’t going so great for Christina Aguilera, who only sold 112k of her new album Bionic. It was enough to give the diva a top three debut, but overall it’s a poor performance that could predict a swift and grisly end to her latest LP.

Eek.

Drake defends Nicki Minaj: “I don’t give a f**k what Lil’ Kim says! Nicki is the baddest chick to ever do this rap sh*t!”

Posted in Beef on June 5th, 2010 by The Prophet

The Lil’ Kim Vs. Nicki Minaj beef took another turn today, with Nicki’s BFF Drake defending his Young Money labelmate live on stage in what was clearly a response to Ray J and Kim’s recent attack on Nicki.

“I can’t say you the baddest BITCH, I can’t do that because I respect you and I love you too much and you look too beautiful, so I’m gonna say you’re the baddest woman to ever do this rap shit!

“I don’t give a fuck what Lil’ Kim or nobody else talkin’ bout, you the baddest chick to ever do this shit! Remember I said that!”

Wow, looks like somebody needs to learn their Hip-Hop history. I’m a gay white boy from Australia and even I know who the true Queens of Hip-Hop are, and it definitely isn’t somebody who hasn’t even dropped an album or had a hit single by themselves.

Girl bye.

Check out Drake’s sweet and kind, yet misinformed, word vomit below, as well as a very special message for Drake and Nicki.

Drake keeps Nicki Minaj ‘Up All Night’ on new Thank Me Later leak.

Posted in New Music on June 1st, 2010 by The Prophet

Drake’s upcoming debut album Thank Me Later has been leaking steadily over the past few weeks, and the latest joint to hit the web is a track with his BFF Nicki Minaj, “Up All Night”.

The song puts a slightly darker spin on the whole “look at me I made it, I’m rich and famous now” theme, but it’s basically just Drake and Nicki stating the obvious.

The Thank Me Later leaks have really established Drake with his own sound and he’s pretty much at the point now where you can recognize his style as soon as he opens his mouth on a track. Well, besides that Kanye West B-side “Find Your Love” of course.

Look out for the album on June 15.

Drake releases mini-movie music video for second single “Find Your Love”.

Posted in Music Videos on May 11th, 2010 by The Prophet

Singer-rapper Drake today premiered the Anthony Mandler directed video for his new single “Find Your Love”.

Shot on location in Jamaica, the clip for the Kanye West produced 808′s and Heartbreak clone is more like a mini-movie than your typical music video. It follows our hero Drake and his affair with the girlfriend/wifey of a local gang leader. Towards the end of the video things head down the Slumdog Millionaire path as Drake tries to sneak his love interest away from the clutches of her spouse so they can run away together and live happily ever after.

The video would’ve ended nicely there (5:02 to be exact), but the always oh-so over-the-top Anthony Mandler decides to take things too far, making for an eye-rolling and unnecessary conclusion.

Besides the ending though it really is a great video, combining beautiful cinematics with an engaging and suspenseful storyline, not to mention Drake himself who makes a nice piece of eye candy.

Look out for Drizzy’s debut disc Thank Me Later on July 15.
