Drake drops his first single “Over”. Does it live up to the hype?

Posted in New Music on March 4th, 2010 by The Prophet

After what feels like an eternity, ‘it’ rapper Drake has finally dropped his hotly-anticipated first single “Over”.

The Boi-1da produced cut has a similar feel to Drake previous hits “Best I Ever Had” and “Forever”, using plenty of live instruments in favor of the computer-generated bass and synths that’s dominated hip-hop for a while. Lyrically it’s nothing new with Drake hitting back at the fakes and frauds that are after a piece of the Drizzy pie now that he’s famous, but it feels genuine, and maybe even epic when Drake sings “Who the fuck a ya”ll / What am I doin’ / oh yeah I’m doin’ me” on the chorus.

The mixture of singing and rapping, which has become Drake’s trademark, also gives the song an edge over the competition and helps it stand out amongst a lot of the stale sounds that have been flooding hip-hop lately.

Drizzy’s debut Thank Me Later is currently due in May. Will you be buying a copy?

Sade performs on Jimmy Kimmel and politely turns down Drake collaboration

Posted in Performances on February 17th, 2010 by The Prophet

The incredible Sade continued the heavy duty promotional duties for their new album Soldier of Love by performing the title track on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier tonight.

According to the final numbers from HitsDoubleDaily the album is set to sell around 481k, which is the same massive first-week numbers that country group Lady Antebellum did recently.

Now moving on from that for a moment, do you remember when Drake was confidently popping off in multiple interviews about how badly he wanted to collaborate with Sade for his debut album? Well Sade was asked about it in a recent interview, and honey, she’s N.I. (not interested!).

“I don’t think they have contacted me,” Sade, 51, told Canada’s National Post. “I’ve never collaborated because I’ve always avoided working outside my safety zone — I can be exactly who I am and can fail or succeed within the moment. I feel safe working like I do. I wouldn’t want to work in a situation where I am expected to deliver, because I think I wouldn’t deliver.”

Drake should be thankful that Sade declined in such a dignified manner when she could’ve easily saved some time by just thrusting the palm of her hand forward and yelling “NEXT!”.

*Update*

Final Billboard numbers are in. Sade’s Soldier of Love sold 502k for the first week. Congrats!

Drake covers Complex and denies being a sell-out

Posted in Photoshoots on January 26th, 2010 by The Prophet

Sexy M.F. Drake has covered the latest issue of Complex magazine to start drumming up some publicity for his upcoming debut album Thank Me Later, which should see a single released soon since the album has reportedly been completed.

During the accompanying interview Drake talks about the usual things such as working with Lil’ Wayne and the horrible music video for “Best I Ever Had”, but he also addresses criticism that he’s a sell-out who’s achieved commercial success because his music is more mainstream than his contemporaries like Kid Cudi, J.Cole and Wale etc.

Complex: Of all your contemporaries, it seems like you want to be famous the most.

Drake: That’s gonna change. When J. Cole’s sound is the new sound that everybody wants to hear, he’s gonna be like, “I wanna be as big as possible with this shit.” I didn’t jeopardize anything to be in the position I’m in. You’re listening to the shit that I believe in, not some shit I did because I needed to get here. People just happen to embrace my shit. That’s very rare—but I also think the younger generation appreciates that brand of music, so I think it’s possible for one of these guys to emerge and do exactly what I’m doing. {source}

Personally I wouldn’t call Drake a sell-out and I do actually love all his music, but I definitely think that he’s more interested in the almighty dollar than Wale & Kid Cudi are, who in my opinion are both musically superior to Drake.

At the end of the day though they’re all making great music and they all have their own niche, so I’m comfortable with being a huge fan of all three.

What do you think of the whole Drake, Wale and Cudi situation?

New Keri Hilson album due May 31 — Jeff Bhasker, Drake and more on board

Posted in News on January 16th, 2010 by The Prophet

Keri Hilson’s sophomore album could be hitting shelves sooner than we all thought, with the dime diva’s label Interscope telling Billboard that they’re aiming for a Memorial Day (May 31) release date.

The album will be preceded by a new single, tentatively due in March, but if things go according to plan we could see the song even earlier.

Joining Keri’s sophomore set will be the usual suspects of Timbaland, Danja and Polow Da Don, along with some new faces including Jeff Bhasker and rapper Drake.

In case you’re unfamiliar with Bhasker’s previous work, he’s produced for Kanye West (808’s & Heartbreak album), Kid Cudi (Man on the Moon album) and Alicia Keys (Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart).

“We’re just getting into this,” says Interscope urban music head DJ Mormile. “But we already have an idea of what we want to do. This album will continue the evolution of Keri, building off the hits ‘Knock You Down’ and ‘Turning Me On,’ which helped define her. This new album will be ‘Turning You On’ times 10.”

It sounds like we could be getting the urban Keri Hilson on this album, but the success of her pop hit “I Like” tells a different story.

What do you guys think?

How many funny faces can Timbaland pull in four minutes and seventeen seconds?

Posted in Music Videos on December 8th, 2009 by The Prophet

First we got the “crazy eyes” in the Morning After Dark video, and now Timbaland and his facial gymnastics have returned for his latest clip Say Something, lifted from his ill-fated Shock Value II album.

The video actually features rapper Drake, but you’ll probably be too distracted by Timbo’s bulging eyes and head swivels to notice.

My personal favourite is from 3:32-3:34!

Drake is in the pursuit of Kid Cudi

Posted in Music Videos on December 8th, 2009 by The Prophet

Two months too late rapper Kid Cudi has premiered the video for his third single “The Pursuit of Happiness” from his debut album Man On The Moon: The End of Day.

Canadian rapper Drake appears in the video in place of the songs actual features MGMT & Ratatat. Why is Drake in the video you ask? I have no idea, he just seems to follow Cudi around for five minutes. He looks hot though so it’s ok.

“The Pursuit of Happiness” was released as a single in the beginning of October, peaking at #59 on the Hot 100, but it’s now being re-released next month to capitalise off of Cudi’s support slot on Lady GaGa’s new tour.

The video is amazing and the song is even better so I’m glad that the song will get another chance to shine. Check it out below.

The Young Money crew have just dropped their new video “Bedrock” featuring R&B singer Lloyd, which is lifted from the upcoming YM compilation album We Are Young Money (Dec 21).

The clip features all ya hip-hop faves like Lil’ Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, SNL and many more so check it out.

Are we about to see a Young Money style take over, similar to when Murder Inc ruled the world?

COVER GIRLS! Drake, Chris Brown, and GaGa!

Posted in Photoshoots on December 2nd, 2009 by The Prophet

Chris Brown and Drake are both sharing a double cover for the highly anticipated re-launch issue of Vibe Magazine.

Judging by the cover I assume that Breezy’s article is another “apology” feature. I’d much rather check out what Drake has to say, especially if he’s spilling the tea on his debut album Thank Me Later.

The R&B boys aren’t the only ones sharing a double cover, with pop princesses Lady GaGa and Britney Spears both appearing in Elle Magazine.

It’s nice to see that GaGa left her silly little props at home for this shoot because she looks gorgeous.

Kid Cudi enlists Drake & Josh Hartnett for “Pursuit of Happiness” music video

Posted in News on November 30th, 2009 by The Prophet

Hipster rapper Kid Cudi has confirmed to MTV that the long-awaited music video for his third single “Pursuit of Happiness” will finally be released soon. He also surprisingly revealed that his HBO co-star Josh Hartnett will produce the clip, whilst Canadian rapper and good friend Drake will make a cameo.

I just saw the first rough cut the other day. Drake is in it. He has a cameo … a bunch of my homies that I knew coming up. We were just kicking it. When you see the video, it just makes me feel good, because I’m seeing all my friends and people that matter in my life. We were all celebrating. It’s like a New Year’s Eve-type thing. Everybody’s just getting wasted.

It’s about time that they released this video because the single already peaked at #59 in the beginning of October.

Anyways you can currently catch Cudi opening for Lady GaGa on her tour, and you can look out for his new HBO TV series “How to Make it in America” starring Josh Hartnett to air next year.

SNAPPED! Cassie / Dirty Money / Jennifer Lopez / Drake

Posted in Candids on November 20th, 2009 by The Prophet

Cassie was snapped supporting her man on Thursday night when she rocked up for Diddy’s 40th birthday bash in New York City.

Stunning.

Thanks to Mette @ CassieVerse for these pics.

Also at the party were Diddy’s Dirty Money bandmates Dawn Richards & Kalenna.

The group are currently struggling with their recent singles failing to move up the charts.

Jennifer Lopez was snapped recently in rehearsals for her upcoming American Music Awards performance, which many are dubbing as her official comeback.

It looks like Jenny is really gonna put on a show for us!

Last but not least is my man Drake who was snapped on Thursday hosting a small event in Nashville.

He’s so cute. He looks like a big hound dog!

Thanks to Rap-Up for the Drake and Jlo pics.
