Burlesque: It takes a legend, to make a star.

Posted in News on August 30th, 2010 by The Prophet

Here is the official finalised poster for Cher & Christina Aguilera’s upcoming trash-epic, Burlesque.

If this movie is a hit, I demand to see a sequel in which Diana Ross bursts onto the scene as Cher’s long lost rival, complete with her own pop star protégé in tow!

In other, semi-related news, both Miley Cyrus and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins have thrown in their two cents regarding Christina’s Bionic flop.

Miley: “I love Christina and I love her new video, ‘Not Myself Tonight’. I love that she’s always stepping out of the box and I think people talk about her but only because we’re so infatuated with her because she is the original, she’s the one who started it all, so actually she didn’t copy anyone, other people copy Christina!”

Billy: “Look at someone who’s a brilliant and talented person: Christina Aguilera. Two years away, does the big buildup for the record, record comes out, critics pan it, “Oh, it’s like Lady whatever,” and everything’s blown up for her — overnight. You can’t make that kind of investment as an artist anymore. I think it’s too much, as we say in the business, downside. I can’t ride the Twitter wave, is what I’m saying.” {source}

Interesting points from both parties!

Christina Aguilera’s manager speaks: “No one is giving up on Bionic”.

Posted in News on August 9th, 2010 by The Prophet

Over the weekend, some random member of the Digital Spy forum claimed to be a label intern and posted a rumor that Christina Aguilera was planning to leave her label RCA Records in order to sign a new deal with Live Nation. The rumor subsequently spread like wild fire, causing Aggie’s manager Irving Azoff (who doubles as the chairman of Live Nation) to clear the whole mess up, while also denying some previous comments he made about Aggie’s upcoming flick Burlesque which were blown out or proportion.

Christina is under a long term contract with RCA records! Live nation is not a record company.

No one is giving up on ‘Bionic’. ‘You Lost Me’ is coming out in the UK. The video is out here now. You aren’t seeing her as she is finishing ‘Burlesque’. We won’t give up.

Nobody has given up? Coulda fooled me. It probably would’ve been a good move to get Christina to perform, or at least attend, today’s Teen Choice Awards.

As I’ve wondered out loud to myself before, it feels like Aggie’s current strategy is to lay low and let the heat die down, then to re-emerge and utilize a little cross-promotion by using Burlesque to possibly revive Bionic.

Christina ditches Bionic in favor of Burlesque?

Posted in News on August 5th, 2010 by The Prophet

For weeks now, the only glimpse of Christina Aguilera that we’ve been given have been of the diva stalking around L.A. and car dealerships with her family in tow. If you’ve been wondering why she hasn’t been promoting her struggling album Bionic, then you’re probably not alone. Now, some new comments from Ticketmaster CEO/Live Nation chairman Irving Azoff (who was originally scheduled to promote the scrapped Bionic world tour) has indicated that the Bionic-era may be completely kaput, with Aggie now putting all her energy into her upcoming feature film debut Burlesque.

“Please be patient. You will see Christina everywhere as soon as movie promo starts. She is working non-stop finishing music for the movie”. [Via Toyaz-World]

At this point, Aguilera is lucky that she has another project to fall back on in the wake of the Bionic fiasco. Not only has her latest single “You Lost Me” completely failed to chart, but the album itself has only pushed about 250,000 copies in the US since it’s June release.

With the media against her, Aguilera has two options: She can either put herself out there and fend off questions about her poor sales and tired comparisons to Lady GaGa, or she can lay low until things die down, pray the Burlesque is a hit with critics & the general public, and hope that Cher’s position as one of the most-loved entertainers in the industry rubs off on her.

Basically, Burlesque could actually save Christina’s career – or end it for good.

Cher & Christina camp it up in “Burlesque” trailer.

Posted in News on August 4th, 2010 by The Prophet

We haven’t seen much of Christina Aguilera since her latest single “You Lost Me” failed to chart, but now the diva has shown up next to the legendary Cher in the trashtastic trailer for her feature film debut “Burlesque”.

Judging by the trailer, Aggie appears to be adequate enough, but the real star of the show is Cher – who delivers several hilariously camp zingers with a diva grandiosity that only someone like her could pull off. Seriously, from now on I’m gonna be quoting, “It’s sweet that you think so”, every time somebody tries to tell me that they can do something!

Judging by this trailer — which I have to remind you is directed by Robin Antin’s brother — “Burlesque” looks like the PG-13 version of “Showgirls”. But hey, who says that’s a bad thing? Well, besides critics, moviegoers and almost all of the general public…

Christina Aguilera finally gets it right with “You Lost Me” music video.

Posted in Music Videos on July 21st, 2010 by The Prophet

Struggling powerhouse pop diva Christina Aguilera today premiered the second music video single from her Bionic album, “You Lost Me”.

The video for the somber power ballad was directed and written by Anthony Mandler, who’s best known for shooting about 50,000 Rihanna clips. Mandler can be a bit of a one-trick-pony at times, but Christina’s caught him on a good day because “You Lost Me” is a sterling effort.

Mandler has done an incredible job of taking viewers into the heart of “You Lost Me”, creating a living and breathing world around Christina which evolves and transforms to match her emotions as she sings about an unfaithful lover who’s left her scarred. Adding to the living environment, is the way that Mandler has seamlessly transitioned all the scenes in the clip together, giving Christina’s world a genuine pulse instead of just your typical scene-by-scene, shot-by-shot video. The whole tends to be a little overly dramatic at times, but so is the diva herself, so it’s an accurate reflection of Aggie’s style and sentiments.

“You Lost Me” definitely makes up for the humiliating mess that was the “Not Myself Tonight” video. It’s just a shame that with the way Bionic is going at the moment, this song and video will probably end going to waste, destined to be later looked upon by fans as an under-appreciated favorite.

Christina Aguilera turns up the tempo on “You Lost Me” club mix.

Posted in New Music, Uncategorized on July 19th, 2010 by The Prophet

Christina Aguilera’s new single “You Lost Me” has been given the remix treatment by Grammy-winning remixer Hex Hector for the official  Hex Hector & Mac Quayle club mix.

If you’ve ever stepped foot into a dance party or a gay club, then you’re almost guaranteed to have heard Hex’s magic touch on mixes from mega-divas and superstars like Toni Braxton, Madonna, Whitney Houston. Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson.

In Christina’s case, Hex has done a really fantastic job of turning the power ballad ballad into a major club anthem. He hasn’t tried to do anything too daring with the track, opting instead to give the song a modern feel, while still keeping the retro style of his previous work with a number of the ladies I mentioned above.

I can definitely see this hitting the top of the Billboard club charts in absolutely no time, but whether or not the original edit will impact the Hot 100 is another story.

RUMOUR: RCA concerned over “headstrong” Christina Aguilera.

Posted in Rumours on July 18th, 2010 by The Prophet

As Christina Aguilera’s new album Bionic continues to struggle on the charts, reports have come out of the NY Post claiming that the diva’s label RCA Records are concerned over her inability to connect with the general public.

The Post have also claimed that Aguilera has  “misjudged the market” and that she’s no longer the “edgy” popstar that she was in the early days when her main competition was the likes of Britney, Mandy and Jessica.

Her early albums seemed rebellious and edgy compared with Britney Spears’ and Jessica Simpson’s, but she’s now competing against more avant-garde acts such as Gaga, Rihanna and M.I.A.

A source added: “She wants to compete with her peers, but there is a disconnect because, over the years, she’s been a mother and a wife, not a rocker.”

The source then continues, claiming that RCA are having some problems with the “headstrong” singer.

“The label has done its part, but she’s headstrong. There have been candid conversations between her and the label about connectivity, but it doesn’t seem that she’s been open to that dialogue.”

If you’re a Christina fan, then the whispers above certainly don’t sound too far-fetched. Ever since her sophomore album Stripped in 2002, Aggie’s been known as one of the few pop stars to take on a lot of creative control over her projects, dictating their direction and crafting her own image.

Anyway, the NY Post reached out to both Christina and RCA over the reports, which she of course, they denied.

An RCA rep denies any panic, saying Aguilera “is a pillar of the RCA Music Group and is an undeniable talent with one of the greatest voices of our time. She continues to push herself as an artist, and we are behind her efforts 100 percent.”

Her manager, Irving Azoff, added, “I am the one who deals with the label, and this couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Whether or not the “source” speaking to the Post is fact or fiction, they’ve still raised a good point. Christina’s last two albums — 2002′s Stripped and 2006′s Back to Basics — both thrived heavily on a well crafted image and theme, whereas Bionic just feels like Christina being her little ol’ regular self. She’s no longer channeling a rebellious pop tart or a sultry jazz siren; now, she’s just a regular mother and wife who tends to the baby by day, then tries to be a sexy pop star by night.

Britney Spears looked like she was headed into trouble when she first became a mother and lost her ‘sexiness’, but unlike Christina, Britney never built her albums around such complex themes and imagery. Sure, she’s made the switch from virgin to vamp, but it was never as extreme or as over the top as Christina’s image changes. Now that Christina is no longer walking around in assless chaps or pretending that it’s 1920, it’s a little hard to accept her as the lesbian dominatrix in “Not Myself Tonight” when all we ever see her doing outside of her music videos is raising a baby and talking about how great it is to be a mother and a wife.

SNEAK PEEK: Christina Aguilera’s “You Lost Me” music video.

Posted in Music Videos on July 9th, 2010 by The Prophet

Christina Aguilera’s been a little quiet over the past few weeks, but she emerged earlier today to give VH1 a sneak peek at her new music video for her Bionic power ballad “You Lost Me”.

The video is directed by the dark and dreary Anthony Mandler, and shows Christina dealing with an unfaithful lover inside a burning house. And no thank you; we do not need nasty jokes comparing the crumbling house to Christina career.

Hopefully the video is pretty good, because so far “You Lost Me”  has been performing poorly on both iTunes and radio. It’s still early days yet though, so things could possibly turn around (maybe?).

The “You Lost Me” video is due out at the end of this month. Meanwhile, Aggie’s album Bionic is currently sitting at #32 on the Billboard charts in its fourth week of release.

SNAPPED: Christina Aguilera and Cher official ‘Burlesque’ promo pics.

Posted in Photoshoots on June 30th, 2010 by The Prophet

Christina Aguilera’s feature film debut ‘Burlesque‘ is still several months away from release, but the promo already seems to be kicking in, with several official photos from the flick being released online today for a special sneek peek with USA Today.

In the US, Burlesque is due for release on November 24, only six days after the next Harry Potter film. In other words, it’s doomed!

The soundtrack doesn’t have a release date yet, but will feature contributions from Danja, Sia, Claude Kelly, Tricky Stewart and Diane Warren. Cher will have two tracks on the album, while Christina has four.

I absolutely cannot wait to see this movie. Whether it’s legitimately good, or so-bad-it’s-good like Showgirls, you already know that it’s going to be a blast.

Check out more pics of Christina and the stunning Queen Cher below.

Christina Aguilera snags Anthony Mandler for ‘You Lost Me’ vid. Scores role on Entourage.

Posted in News on June 29th, 2010 by The Prophet

According to what is being cited as Anthony Mandler’s official Twitter page, the director will shoot the music video for Christina Aguilera’s new single “You Lost Me”.

The director is known for his overly dark and heavily stylized clips, and has previously worked with Rihanna, Drake, Jay-Z, Amerie and more.

Christina’s been pretty scarce since her Bionic album bombed on Billboard, but she’s planning to return to screens soon with a guest role on the season finale of HBO’s hit series ‘Entourage‘. The diva will play herself – but she’s also a client of Ari Gold’s. She’ll also perform on the episode, singing at Ari’s birthday as a favor to him. {source}

Aggie’s one-time rival Eminem will also guest star in the episode, but unlike Christina, he won’t be performing.

I expect that we’ll see Christina back out and about when the “You Lost Me” video starts filming, and then she’ll probably start performances after the video is released.

Snapped: Christina Aguilera attends ‘Burlesque’ party in Mexico.

Posted in Candids, Performances on June 27th, 2010 by The Prophet

Christina Aguilera seems to have been laying low since her new album ‘Bionic‘ under-performed on the charts, but the diva was back out in full force over the weekend for a small industry party to promote her new flick ‘Burlesque‘, held at Summer of Sony, Cancun, Mexico. {source}

The singer was accompanied by her co-stars Kristen Bell and Cam Giganet, and director Steve Antin. Unfortunately though, Cher was noticeably missing in action.

Burlesque‘ doesn’t open until late November, but the movie and it’s accompanying soundtrack could be the thing that salvages the ‘Bionic’ era for Christina. However, if the movie bombs — which it very well could if the media witch hunt against Christina hasn’t died down in the next few months — then Aggie will be you-know-what creek without a paddle.

Burlesque‘ is going to be a very pivotal moment in the 10 plus year career of Christina Aguilera.

While the bleary ballad will serve as Aggie’s next single in the US, the schoolyard stomper “I Hate Boys” will be released as her next Australian single.

So far, Aggie’s ‘Bionic’ has sold about 155,000 copies in the US in it’s first two weeks of release. It’s already close to falling out of the top ten of the Billboard charts, so perhaps “You Lost Me” will stabilize things for the singer, though, to be honest, I don’t see it happening.
