Billboard today released their list of the top 40 biggest money makers in music for 2009, and it’s come with a few major surprises.
Unlike other earnings lists and rankings, Billboard are only including money made from music, so that includes things like publishing royalties, physical and digital sales, royalties from streaming and touring revenue. It does NOT cover earnings from endorsements, commercials, products etc.
Billboard also only listed the artists actual share of their revenue, and not the total that they grossed.
Coming in at #1 are super group U2 who took home a staggering $108 million dollars, with a lot of that coming from a record breaking tour and a lucrative 360-deal the band have with Live Nation.
The biggest female on the list was of course Madonna who ranked at #3 with $47 million. Just like U2 she also has a deal with Live Nation, which earned her a lot from her Sticky & Sweet tour, as well as money from publishing royalties and physical and digital record sales.
The next top female was Britney Spears at #5 who banked close to $39 million from her top-earning Circus world tour, album sales and extremely strong digital sales (7.5 million downloads in 2009 alone).
Hot on Britney’s heels was pop-rock chick Pink who came in at #6 with earnings of $36 million. Once again most of that came from her Funhouse world tour and record sales and publishing royalties.
Surprisingly much further down the list was Forbes cash Queen Beyonce, who ranked at #13 with $23 million. Most of that money was again from touring, as well as the huge sales of her album I Am… Sasha Fierce which probably would’ve earned her some nice publishing cheques since she’s listed as a songwriter on all her songs.
Whilst Forbes listed Beyonce’s overall earnings between 2008-2009 at $87 million, Billboard proves that Bey’s big bank mainly consists of earnings outside of the music world, such as for her endorsement deals with L’Oréal, Pepsi, Nintendo and even Japanese bottled water brand Crystal Geyser.
You can check out the full list over at Billboard.com which includes Michael Jackson, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Tina Turner, Brad Paisley, Kings of Leon, Taylor Swift, Cher, Lil’ Wayne, Celine Dion, Nickleback, Bob Dylan, Coldplay and many more.
The lowest person on the list was Bette Midler with $9.4 million, so if your fave isn’t on the list then you know that they made less than that from their music last year!
