T-ara returns with “Don’t Leave” and “Day by Day” on Music Core

After snatching our wigs earlier this week with the release of their epic new single “Day by Day” and it’s accompanying sci-fi extravaganza music video,  T-ara made their live comeback with a double performance on tonight’s episode of Music Core.

It’s not only the first time we’ve seen the girls perform their new material, but also their very first performance with new member Areum, who we’ve all been waiting to analyze and judge after her shock addition to Korea’s messiest girl group.

In typical outlandish T-ara fashion, the girls opened their first comeback stage with a 70-person orchestra and CGI snowflakes for their ballad “Don’t Leave”. As with a typical K-Pop comeback stage, parts were mimed, parts were live, and parts were drowned out by the backing track. From the bits I could hear, T-ara sounded pretty good, and showed how far they’ve improved since their debut days. Jiyeon was missing, but that was a plus because it gave us more of a chance to check out new member Areum without Jiyeon hogging the camera like usual. Areum looked pretty damn beautiful, and CCM were actually smart enough to let her both rap and sing during the performance to establish right off the bat that she isn’t going to be another Qri/Dara/Hara.

Next was “Day by Day”, and that was the real wig snatcher of the night for me — if only for how pretty they all looked. Hwayoung opened by rapping her verse completely live, before Jiyeon finally appeared to mime her lines and flaunt her stunning new black hair. The choreography could’ve been executed with more power and confidence, but the routine itself is gorgeous and really matches the song. Areum received quite a lot of screen time again, singing and rapping like the previous performance, and she looked pretty stunning, but then again, all the members did. All these years of constant surgeries and repeated makeovers (*looks at Boram*) have finally paid off, because judging by this performance, it’s pretty safe to say that T-ara’s now matching SNSD in the beauty stakes.

Here’s a few other important bits and pieces I noticed about both performances.

  • Hwayoung – After being shoved aside for years, Hwayoung finally got her chance to shine. She got a tonne of camera time, was one of the only members during “Day by Day” who performed completely live, and she looked incredible. It’s about damn time.
  • Jiyeon – There was a lot less Jiyeon than usual, as she missed the first performance and received less camera time than usual during “Day by Day”. She’s the face of the group, so naturally she’s going to receive the most attention, but I was glad to see her lay low this time so the other members could get some much needed screen time, especially Hwayoung and Areum.
  • Eunjung – Eunjung, Eunjung, where the fuck is Eunjung? She’s probably T-ara’s most talented member overall, second most popular member after Jiyeon, and one of the most well-rounded idols in K-Pop, yet it seems like she’s utilized less and less with each subsequent T-ara comeback. She barely did a thing during “Don’t Leave”, and they avoided zooming in on her when she sung her small part on the hook during “Day by Day”. What the hell is going on, CCM? I know her flawless legs are like tree trunks, but that’s no excuse.
  • Areum – T-ara’s new girl seems talented and pretty enough to warrant her addition, but her dancing during “Day by Day” was a little sloppy, and at times she looked as if she didn’t know what she was doing. I look forward to seeing her improve over the coming weeks, and a Maxim cover shoot would also be nice.
  • Qri & Boram – The two members of T-ara that nobody cares about utterly slayed my life.

Overall, a pretty solid comeback. Soyeon so pretty <3!

EPIC come back stage ever especially for Don’t Leave.
IF the world end tomorrow,I would like to thank you LORD for sending me these 8 gorgeous angels named T-ARA. http://www.

And seriously how can I leave my QUEENS of T-ARA? T-ARA are TOO PERFECT and TOO AMAZING to be betrayed by someone die hard QUEEN’S like me.

For Day By Day, seem all members got their lines and screen times fairly..Love how baby dino Jiyeon not always stay at the center,
Hwa rapping part are so perfect. Qri voice are stuck in my mind. As usual, Soyeon angelic vocal, perfect. Even if angel pass by, I believe those angels will stop after hearing her great vocal.

That’s my Queens. Areum first performance OK but hoping she will improve in next come back stage. Boram, ahy you look never aging? Eunjung/ The super multi talented idol so far..

  • theprophetblog

Soyeon truly does look like an angel! Love her <3

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1172051246 James Smith III

even though i was orginally against them adding more members to t-ara now the group somehow seems whole

  • http://zn3twork.com craZy18gurl

It was a wonderful comeback! They were all gorgeous and shining brightly!

Eunjung is really receiving less parts. : The course in Day by Day though is my most favorite part, so I’m really loving the small part she did get, lol!

  • cuntley

I almost shat myself when I saw that Qri and Boram got more than one line to sing in the first performance. They are moving on up!

  • cuntley

omg dead. i was the one that got banned in the DBD video @ 00:46. ^___^

  • johnnybravo831

I was so pleased with both of these comeback stages, save for the part where Eunjung was lipsyncing for her life during Day by Day.

    Noteworthy:
    1) Hwayoung. Chills. Love a good “underdog gets the spotlight” story. They’re finally putting her in that “Main Rapper” category and it is well deserved, as evidenced with both of these performances.

    2) Qri. Ummm… singing live for Don’t Leave??? AND sounding good?!?!? WHAT?!??! I can officially stan for her even harder now without feeling bad about it. Boram’s getting some love now too.

    3) Areum. Perfect intro to the new girl. It seems as though she’s got a pretty serviceable voice, which I can’t wait to hear more of.

Overall, I love the distribution of parts for both tracks and the lack of Jiyeon in Don’t Leave was fine by me. Portentous of things to come in that Eunjung and Jiyeon had the least screen time? Who knows! Would I mind it? Not really, cuz it’s clear now that we have members who COULD fill the void they might leave. I’m happy to have them all here and now though. FUCK YEAH, T-ARA!

p.s. thanks for such a timely post on the live perfs! I almost commented on AllKpop’s post (which I HATE doing), but checked here before I did that just in case. I like this space much more. Too many haters on AKP. =P

  • Residentkpop

    such a boring stage tbh…

  • Jay

My poor Hwayoung sounded so breathless during her Day by Day rap. They should’ve given half of it (or all of it tbh) to Eunjung or Eunjung/Hyomin. That would’ve been epic. But of course Hwayoung needs her screentime too…

Areum is alright. She definiely can improve.

  • jknlet

toitally agree about Eunjung, i´m so mad about this, she is the most talented and complete artist of T-ARA. Donñt know if ccm want´s her to do more things besides T-ara and they are preparing the field for those stages she will be busy, but is not excuse. They are wasting Eunjung talent, that´s not smarth.

  • johnnybravo831

I also have to say that, after watching the perfs again, Eunjung just pissed me off with these stages. What little time they DID give her, she was lipsyncing and looking hella bored. Yes, I agree with you she probably is one of the most well rounded idols, but I don’t think I’ve seen her show that LIVE more than a handful of times, especially where the vocals are concerned. If she’s so fucking great, why was she the only one who had no live parts in these perfs? Even Qri and Boram sang live, so where was this bitch?

  • johnnybravo831

I don’t think the blame can really be put on CCM when what little parts she DID get in these stages were mimed to within an inch of their lives and when she’s up there looking as lifeless as she did in these. She has to show me that there’s something there to waste because, in these performances, she didn’t show me a damn thing. Have I seen it in the past? Sure, once or twice. But more often than not, she’s miming through the parts that should be showcasing how “awesome” she is.

  • roxy808

I’m disappointed with how they executed the choreography during the chorus for “Day by Day”. At least with Jonte, he had the groove and finesse that the moves require. It was painful to see T-ara skip around like a hot mess.

Also, is it just me or did most of the girls looked really dead during their solo parts? *coughs*SOYEON*coughs* I know the song has a sad feeling to it but atleast show some sort of emotion in your eyes instead of looking like your vibrator’s batteries died.

This performance just proves my theory that some kpop girl groups can easily “monkey see, monkey do” a whole routine, but struggle when it comes to evoking passion or emotion in their moves. Its a shame because I’m obsessed with “Day by Day” and I really had high hopes for them when the song first leaked. Before I totally lose hope, I’m gonna have to wait and see if their next performances shows improvement.

  • cuntley

Eunjung is sick. She’s been having throat problems all week…

  • http://twitter.com/LoveOfDeath Huong Huynh

Soyeon is on the verge of losing her voice. I’m quite amazed that she was still able to sing like that at the bridge in DBD.

  • theprophetblog

It’s not Eunjung’s fault. The hook is pretty much sung by the entire group I think, with Eunjung’s vocals lead, so they make it mimed since poor Eunjung didn’t even get a clear solo vocal in the recorded song. She had one initially, the big note on the bridge, coz she’s second best vocalist in T-ara, but then they gave it to Areum

  • theprophetblog

Well T-ara gave a lot of charisma and emotion for some of the Cry Cry and Lovey-Dovey performances, so that statement doesn’t apply for everything. I’m sure their stages next week will be way better.

  • http://twitter.com/SuzySooyoung Suzy Sooyoung

    FUCKING DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/SuzySooyoung Suzy Sooyoung

Both performances were naturally a bit of a lackluster. I hope next time they improve with confidence!

As for Soyeon… SLAYED everyone on that damn stage of course. And LMFAO @ my girl Boram getting more than one line! I guess her surgeries are making people demand her ahahahahah

Jiyeon def missing her pretty face, I want more of it.
Eunjung was hmmm weird… She is def very absent lately!
Hyomin is the same case as Eunjung, or even worse.
Areum looked really cute. Good addiction.
Hwayoung, gurl she SLAYED, so glad she is having more screen time.
QRI-rritant…. hmm I’ll conveniently ignore her!

  • A_chan

Who would’ve thought when she was added to the group that Hwayoung could grow into this. Absolutely flaw free.

Areum seems pretty alright. She raps, sings and is classically beautiful with a surprisingly killer body. Dancing is a bit >.<* but T-ara are known for catchy dances not complicated ones so that's fine. So far I see her as another Hyomin, just without the hilarious but sometimes annoying Hyomin cheesy/tackiness.

And no one can pull off the choreography, no surprises there.

  • http://twitter.com/DarkKard4 Sunny

Not really feeling the new member. Shes talented but she kinda bores me. And Boram got two lines! Thats alot for her.

  • http://twitter.com/JoJo_Veronica JoJo

I will never forgive them for dying their hair back …

  • yellowchucks08

Chill out, Eunjung hasn’t had the opportunity to show what she can do in ages. All she’s had in resent comebacks are chorus bits. Schedule conflicts have kept her parts limited because up until Areums addition no one seemed to be able to adequately cover her parts. Shes probably the most active member of T-ara and that unfortunately comes with some drawbacks, mostly in the music department.

I’ll admit songs like DBD and CC don’t show the strongest sides of her (I think she does way better in upbeat or sexy concepts), but I wouldn’t say she looked bored, more like trying to look sad when your really exhausted (I think happiness is a lot easier for her to fake).

That being said, Eunjung was a joy to watch during RP and LD even with her few lines she has amazing energy and generally speaking she, along with Hyomin, has one of the most consistent and strong vocals in the group. However, when you give her 5 word verses what do you expect her to do?

As for the lipsyncing? One, she’s sick (said so the same as Soyeon via twitter). Two, its unfair to call her out on in when the entire thing was almost completely lipsynced (at least DBD, she sang her lines in DL and so did everyone else except Sso) and most of the parts that were live were shaky.

  • hahaha

hahaha so funny when people say 2ne1 new song is boring and these NOT??? laughing my ass off! anyway this group look like SNSD

  • FreakyFlyBri

I loved it, if for no other reason than they gave Qri and Boram something to do. They all looked flawless, but I do agree that Areum lacked confidence during her choreo. It was probably nerves more than anything, I’m sure she’ll improve with time. Girl sounded solid live, though. All in all, I think they slayed it…as stupid as CCM can be, it seems like they actually listened to the fans and gave everybody something to do (although it’s criminal that they’re giving Eunjung so little to do). And color me suprised at how little screen time and lines Hyomin got compared to what she usually gets…I loved it, things seem a lot more fair this time around. And Boram…damn. She’s getting a lot of love this time around if for no other reason than how lovely she’s looking, and I’m loving it! <3

  • hiyaaa

Well, because of one performance? Srsly, she always sings live, even in Don’t Leave. She’s usually one of the members you can always hear o.o

I wish she’d kept the high note though… and Areum could’ve sang Hyomin’s second verse. It’s not like she sang the high note live either… (at least the part that mattered lol).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Pingo-McGraw/100002169160218 Pingo McGraw

    my 6 cents:

Hwayoung: she used to be the joke. remember: ilikelikeyouthis ilikeyoulikeyouthat ?? Now, imo, best part of Day by Day are her ‘spoken words’ they fit the tone of the whole song

Jiyeon: The face of the group brokes her nose. Only in T-ara

Soyeon: You can always count on her.

    Hyomin/Eunjung: where were they?

Qri/Boram: I’m proud of them. when did Boram became the prettiest one? and more important, why did Qri died her hair blue? was she bored?

Areum: talented, wish she become the slutty one.

  • FreakyFlyBri

Haha, I think the reasons that Boram became the prettiest and Qri dyed her hair blue are effectively the same…they wanted to get noticed too. What better way to do it than switching up their images? Boram has always been known as the ugly duckling of the group, while Qri was the conventionally pretty but uninteresting one. I feel the same as you…I’m proud of them, they did what they needed to do to get noticed, and it’s working. Plus they both sound amazing during their parts on Don’t Leave and Day By Day (amazing considering what they usually sound like).

  • Kb

what are the names of the blonde/green haired girl and the brunette/blonde with the longer hair? are they relevant in the group or just decoration? because they are kinda cute

  • http://www.facebook.com/lucaswoodstock Lucas Oliveira Dantas

OMG! if i weren’t so evil i would be crying right now because both performances were fucking amazing!

lol sorry for the fanboy attack, but ever since the release of “day by day” that’s what i’ve become indeed, t-ara’s my fave k-pop group.

i agree with you that this is their best performance, a proof that they’ve come a long way down and are improving more and more, especially their singing.

i think that hwayoung’s, soyeon’s and areum’s parts were all live in both performances and boram’s and qri’s on “don’t leave” were too. i think it’s pretty shitty of tv shows to sink the performances on backtrack but i felt that at least on “don’t leave” it was less.

i feel the hwayoung snub but maybe it’s until areum’s more stablished? i dunno… but areum ROCKED anyway! her both singing and rapping were lovely and reached stunning status on “don’t leave” [btw WHAT A SONG!!]. and please stop the qri/boram hate!! lol

and i think “day by day” had only one flaw: their clothes, too simple! it’s already a midtempo song and those dresses feel way too “everyday” on stage.

lol sorry for the long comment i’m just too excited needed to express…

  • http://www.facebook.com/lucaswoodstock Lucas Oliveira Dantas

qri always had her hair green! it was eunjung who had hers blue. btw i hate they all came back to “original” colors! i was dying to see jiyeon kill everyone on stage with that yellow blonde villain look! and we never got to see soyeon’s pretty purple hair… just on concept pics.

and lol i love boram and qri!

  • animasaurus

My fav. Soyeon rocked it as usual… she is so damn underrated I swear. I also really love Hwayoung (she’s so cute) and personally think she’s a pretty good rapper.

I lol at how unnatural Boram looks now. What happened? Also, imho there are SO many groups prettier than SNSD… I think snsd is one of those groups that looks better collectively.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lucaswoodstock Lucas Oliveira Dantas

exactly mr. prophet! and if there’s a group that we can rely on evolving it is t-ara… ever since i became interested on them i’ve seen every performance i come to find on youtube and i can easily say they’ve come a long way from clumsy-to-tastless on stage to great performances, like the cry cry’s u mentioned.

EDIT: lol i sound like a crazy biased… i’ll stop hahahaha

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1762982253 Jiawen Hearts Arashi

Well, I definitely don’t like the fact that EunJung received such less attention and solo parts. Even BoRam, QRi and HwaYoung were getting more solo parts. EunJung looked really bored here. I think it would be better if EunJung alternate with SoYeon during SoYeon’s solo parts:((

  • http://twitter.com/charliekelso C. K.

    why isn’t Jiyeon blonde? :(

  • XOXTINA

OH PLEASE. Areum sounded breathless at 2:28 to 2:32, do you expect me to believe she hit that presumably ‘live’ high note and sustained it for 4 secs. This Kpop scam is getting tiring, if they can’t sing, DON’T BE A SINGER.
PS: That high note is as fake as the Bom’s I Love You promo picture, just look at the alien thigh, it’s so obvious its photoshopped, I mean I love 2ne1 but bitch please

  • http://twitter.com/ericyumyum I’m with Beyonce

I think they all did an amazing job but yeah, I didn’t notice Jiyeon (my bias) a lot during the performances which is ok for me since it allowed the other members to shine. Areum did a great job and I think she fits well with the group. Her rapping isnt great as the other girls but she still did great. I still don’t understand the purpose of the 60 orchestral thing… I know its just for show but still. what a waste.

  • Darwin

Queen Qri would slap you do hard if she wasn’t slaying Japan and Korea right now for such a horrible comment -_-

Qri sounded so flawles in “Don’t Leave” – I was like, is that her? Qri? My queen can saaaang? Lol

Boram lol poor girl she doesn’t even get delusional stans like Qri. But she looks beautiful with her new face.

Eunjung, I think the fact Eunjung and Jiyeon are stepping down is a good thing. It’s allowing Hwayoung & Hyomin to showcase their skills more, let’s not forget that Hyomin can rap better than Lil Kim.

Ahreum was pretty good for a debut stage, she seemed relaxed and on point, I like it.
Soyeon is boring as fuck, god, she’s more boring than Boram. And “she lost her voice” …. My ass.

  • Darwin

I’m so proud of my girl Qri,

I still think Day by Day needs iconic signature “hey! T-erra, shhh”

  • nonminti

I like T-ara songs but I never enjoy them live, wae wae wae.

  • Iguana

About Qri and Boram… I’m a fan of T.ara thanks to this two members and I don’t think that anybody cares about them, is only that they have less lines and fans than the other members.

  • cuntley

I think people dislike them because they have an image of being pretty useless in the group but it’s not their fault. They both have decent voices but their company hardly ever gives them anything to sing. I think they are cute and they are very funny in reality shows. Qri is a fierce diva and Boram is a precious little sack filled with sunshine and rainbows. ♥

    http://youtu.be/pbxhK_gSKBQ

Boram’s leprechaun laugh at @ 00:42 kills me.

  • tjoz

I prefer HwaYoung as the rapper. Let everyone else sing and let her rap and let Aerum be her little helper. Let Eunjung go back to singing along with Soyeon.

    Boram getting more lines!!

    No blonde Jiyeon??

  • tjoz

    haha 10minute time-out

  • Aoiblue

Man, he needs to know that Boram hasnt had surgery in YEARS.
    Makeup+loss weight+3 years of aging.

  • mybiasbeatsyourbias

Its was good but it was dragging. The orchestra was quite nice. To mix things up with club shit dominating every aspect of kpop.

  • http://twitter.com/britneysunicorn nicky

I care about Qri! She’s one of my faves just for how pretty and cute she is. That being said, I’m completely bored with this comeback. Day By Day is boring as hell and so is the rest of the mini (“Hue” is kind of cute tho). Can’t wait for the trashy generic dance song “Mirage”. That’s all I’m here for when it comes to T-ara.

  • http://warokponorogo.wordpress.com/ Adib Nur Ikhwan

    hwayoung is really amazing….!

I really love when she doing rap in “don’t leave” in the flash light, sound of piano and her facial expression is really amazing.
