In the mainstream music industry, radio payola still exists. It’s just done through third parties, and referred to as marketing. Record labels give the radio marketers large sums of money, which they use to pay radio station management/corporate owners. Some of it is used for swag and promotional materials. A lot is used to buy stuff for the management, or to just give cash to the corporations that own radio stations. It’s all shady. But the point is, if your label doesn’t believe the song is a “hit”, they won’t pay to promote it, either the usual way (with advertising), or through the third party payola method. Shitty songs that follow trends get to the radio because the label has faith in the trends, if not the artists. Nelly’s sound is eclectic, so no one’s paying to get her on the radio. Therefore, she hasn’t charted.
This is also why shit songs by name artists like beyonce or justin beiber will get played on constant rotation, even if no one is checking for them. Because they’re big deals, so they get tons of “marketing” money for radio. The scam on the public is to convince you that the song is a hit, because if you think others like it, then, like a lemming, you’ll jump on the bandwagon as well. It’s probably a better test of a song’s popularity to find out how many downloads it sold for a given period, and compare that to other download sales. Of course, you’d probably need access to soundscan sales records, because you can’t trust record label or artist promotional efforts. (Especially in the case of someone like Beyonce, the sales numbers would be inflated).

I agree with you, I respect artists like Nelly and Xtina who make music according to how they want to make it not what’s hot right now, If more artists did that radio would be way better these days.

That ibreathepop review shone some focus on her weight gain. Therefore, I fail to take it seriously.

I prefer the version that was leaked some weeks back. It was more upbeat BUT I can kinda see why they’d opt for this version. Her drunk-like delivery and the ‘heys!’ here and there fit the whole point of the song-doing nothing in the parking lot with the speakers turned up.
