Rihanna & Katy Perry try to perform at the Grammys

Have the Scammy Awards really already come and gone again for another year? It feels like just last week that I was here bitching about it.
The performance lineup this year was quite robust, boasting some talented acts like Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, Adele, Blake Shelton, The Beach Boys, Alicia Keys, Foster The People, and more. Chris Brown was also there for some reason – I think he won something to do with R&B, even though I could’ve sworn that all I’ve heard from him in the past 12 months are recycled dance-pop records.
Anyway, besides those folks, two of The Prophet Blog’s favorite pop tarts also took the stage – the new Princess of Pop Rihanna, and the Queen of Z100 Katy Perry.
It was a pretty big night for RiRi, who was not only performing solo and alongside Coldplay, but was also nominated for Album of the Year. Of course, we all knew that she didn’t have a snowballs chance in hell at winning with Adele in the picture, but you know what they say – it’s great just to be nominated!
As I expected, RiRi opened with “We Found Love”. She switched up the intro with mixed results, reworking it to sound like a bit like a late night cabaret act. Her voice was all over the place, at times sounding utterly beautiful, and at others resembling the tortured cries of a circus sideshow freak being anally raped with a pitchfork. She improved once the dance beat of “We Found Love” kicked in, but again, her delivery had its ups and downs, especially with her voice grating against a backing track.
The best thing about the performance was her energy. It was a really fun performance, and she worked the stage a lot, even giving the late great Whitney Houston a shout-out (that was the best part of the entire night, tbh). She also did some kind of movement that I wouldn’t exactly call dancing, but whatever it was, I loved it, and she needs to do more of it in the future.
She ended her performance on a high-note, delivering a perfect rendition of “Princess of China” alongside Coldplay while Beyonce sat at home cursing at a screaming Blue Ivy to “shut up” so she could hear Rihanna properly.
And then there was Katy.
I think there’s a big misconception out there that I hate Katy Perry. I most definitely do not. I’m a fan, and I quite like her new single “Part Of Me” (review coming soon), so I was excited to see her bust it out live, but this was just messy.
Questionable vocals aside, it was the entire concept of the performance that really brought it down. Katy was wearing some kind of space catsuit with a wig that made her look like a blue-haired Chucky doll. There was fire and smoke everywhere, like she was trying to recreate an 80′s metal concert with a futuristic twist, but it didn’t gel with the song and everything looked completely out-of-place.
It felt even more ridiculous considering the circumstances. Lady GaGa had toned things down for the night and remained quiet after making a fool of herself last year, the earthy Adele was sweeping all the awards, Whitney Houston had just died, and there wasn’t really anything crazy or over the top going on with the other performances. Then in the middle of it all you had Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj doing way too much, making themselves look completely ridiculous with their outrageous antics while everybody else was sitting back and chilling.
Not a good look.
