Rihanna flaunts her colorful side in the “Rude Boy” music video
Barbadian babe Rihanna has just dropped the Melina-directed video for her new single “Rude Boy”, the third single from her new album Rated R.
The video can be best described “Jamaican pop-art” with it’s wild animation and stunning visual effects. I haven’t liked ANY of the videos from Rated R so far (all for various reasons) but this is easily my favorite Rihanna video ever, and one of the best video’s I’ve seen in a long time.
The whole thing is so sexy, fun and creative and really reflects the song perfectly. Love it!

I love the video. It reminds me of some of M.I.A.’s music videos, combined with the overt sexiness and femininity of Beyonce. But Rihanna combines it in a way that is uniquely her. She needs to stick to stuff like this.

This is one of those creative-type videos that don’t rely on big, exotic locals and lots of extra. And that doesn’t always make a good video. Example? Her big-budget but snooze-fest video for “Hard.”
It’s the art in this video that makes it crazy good. Yeah, it may not cost a whole lot, but visually, this visual shits on any other video from from the Rated R area on artistic merit alone.

yeah, she didn’t give us Janet/Britney/Ciara studio-type dancing that is fun to look at. She went the Beyonce route:
instead of giving us complex dancing, she gave us simple dance moves that can be mimicked in the club. Beyonce does the same thing. I already know the next time I go to the club and Rude Boy plays, everyone who’s seen the video is going to attempt to do that grinding move she does in the chorus.
To the people comparing this to Solange’s “I Decided,” give it a fucking rest! Nobody copied that stranger bitch. Rihanna did her thing with this clip. It was simple and fitted the song. I loved it.

I was prepared to shit all over this video within the first 30 seconds, but I decided to give it a chance. And I must admit…I actually kind of like it. It isn’t my favorite video of hers, by a long shot, but it is good to see her having ‘fun’ (she rarely shows any emotion now, so the occasional smile was nice to see).
There are things that could have been a bit better [like: the hair, her 'dancing', the amount of times she rubbed her ass up against the crotch of a bored looking male model] but this is the best video of the Rated R era and Rude Boy is my favorite song on the album

I agree completely! I loved Rihanna when she first came out and this totally takes me back to that time. Talent-wise she’s grown, but I missed the fun loving side of her. Step in the right direction… A+
I’ll start with the positive…I love Melina’s work! The animation, vibrant colors & editing fit the true nature of the song. Just as “Hard”, her work can make you love a song in an instant.
As for the negative…I was informed that I would see her go back to her roots but apparently she was referring to the wig she used to where in “Music of the Sun/A Girl Like Me” era….oh and Jamaican colors here & there.
I also remember her saying that there would be choreography but I just seen stiff ass whining that didn’t even go with the tempo of the song. She could of have back-up dancers & a simple dance routine(ex. “Pon De Replay”).
In conclusion, Rihanna is lazy in everything that she does that is music-related and she needs the outfits, hair & high budget video magic in order to make it seem as if she “slayed” when the perfomance that she gave in the video was below average.
If Melina didn’t direct this video and everything that she did stayed the same…It would not be anywhere as good as it is now…

I didn’t see video phone in this video. The flashing colorful background is similar to Solange’s “I Decided”. However, I’m curious as to why she gets so much flack and hate about being inspired by others when so many artists do the same thing if not more?
Can anyone say that Usher, Chris Brown, Omarion didn’t copy Michael Jackson, that Beyonce didn’t copy Tina Turner, that Britney Spears or Ciara didn’t copy Janet Jackson and so on? This doesn’t take away from any of their individual talent, but you can clearly see how they’re influenced. Some of them are open and very vocal about their inspirations.
Can anyone even count how many videos have the club scene, the pool side, the mansion or hotel with the great view, etc.? This grown woman doesn’t need me to defend her and I’m certainly not a stan, but maybe I’d understand the harsh criticism of her not being original if she was either the only one or in the minority.
