One Direction return with “Live While We’re Young”

It’s been roughly six months since One Direction‘s Up All Night debuted at the top of the Billboard charts, and as of this week, the album is still sitting comfortably in the top twenty. With such a short amount of time passing since the group officially became the biggest thing since Bieber, it’s no surprise that their new single “Live While We’re Young” looks and sounds like a continuation of the Up All Night era, rather than the beginning of a whole new one.
From the sound to the font to the fashion, ID’s ‘return’ isn’t any different to anything they’ve done before. Their upcoming sophomore album Take Me Home is clearly the My World 2.0 before the Believe, and that’s okay. The group’s rise to super-stardom was so fast that anything else would’ve just been too much, too soon.
Now, as for the actual song… As a Directioner and future rapist of Liam and Zayn, I’d love to gush about how much “Live While We’re Young” is obliterating my soul to pieces, but it’s not.
Crafted by “What Makes You Beautiful” dream team Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk, the single follows exact the same sunny pop-rock style as the group’s first album. The only real difference is that now the boys are singing about getting laid. I like to think of the lyrics as the happy, tween-friendly version of Christina Aguilera’s “Your Body”.
The boys also up the sex appeal in official music video, which features the same outdoorsy “lads just wanna have fun” concept as all their other videos, but with the added bonus of extra muscles and wet t-shirts.
Like all pop music, “Live While We’re Young” is designed to make children horny and to get played on the radio. I get it, and I’ll still turn the dial up if it comes on the radio, but it’s no “What Makes You Beautiful”, and I have little interest in a less awesome version of something that’s already out. That is, not until it’s been mercilessly drilled into my head at every turn.
