One Direction headed to Saturday Night Live, boy bands continue global comeback

Britain’s best boy band One Direction will continue their quest for world domination with a musical guest spot on Saturday Night Live on April 7th.

Although their setlist on the night has yet to be announced, it’s fairly obvious that they’ll perform “What Makes You Beautiful”, which recently became the highest Hot 100 debut from a UK act in almost fifteen years when it rocketed in at No. 28 a couple of weeks ago.

The SNL exposure is guaranteed to boost the popularity of “‘What Makes You Beautiful” on the charts, as well as the band’s debut album Up All Night, which drops in the US this week.

One Direction’s Stateside success follows The Wanted, aka the male version of The Saturdays (1D are Girls Aloud, obviously), who just cracked the top five of the Hot 100 with their tacky, generic hit, “Glad You Came”.

The global popularity of One Direction and The Wanted is just further proof that the world is ready for boy bands again. Even K-Poppers BIGBANG are benefiting from the comeback of the boy band, with their recent Korean-language EP Alive reaching No. 150 on the Billboard 200 off of digital downloads alone.

Hmm, now let me just gloat and say I TOLD YOU SO to all the dumbasses who have been telling me forever that boy bands and girl groups will never make a comeback in America again, despite me clearly stating otherwise back in June, 2011. Oh look, The Prophet Blog is right again, it must be Monday.

NOOOOOO Proph, you’ve defiled BigBang by mentioning them here. When i saw the title i was expecting you to, but hoping you wouldn’t. :(
Even if One Direction and The Wanted weren’t popular in the States, BigBang still would’ve cracked the charts there. BigBang is in a league of their own; a million times better than both of them combined. :P
Oh and i’m pretty sure that you’re almost always right with your predictions.

Well of course GODBANG is still the best<3

Who else can chart on Billboard 200 just off iTunes downloads from an EP that's not even in English or promoted at all in America?

  • http://twitter.com/ThatBoyLuke Luke M

LMAO JLS are the most generic pile of crap ever…

  • xx

Maybe it’s because American people are growing bored with all these female performers dominating the radio and charts, like Adele, Rihanna, Minaj, Swift, Gaga, Beyonce and the fact that Top 40 male performer in America now are pretty forgettable and cheesy (Flo Rida, Guetta, LMFAO, Chris Brown, etc). Also country and hip hop never die but never really lead now. People are searching something fresh and new, like boybands and indie bands. Look at how Foster The People, Fun., Gotye, The Black Keys, The Wanted, One Direction and other new bands climbing the charts. It proves everything.

A lot of unprecedented stuff has been happening in the American pop scene lately, like the rise of alternative music and boybands. And I LOVE IT! Clearly people are getting tired of endless dance music and degenerate pop sluts and it shows. More variety is starting to creep its way into the market. And for the first time in a long time, the future is looking bright for US pop.

doesn’t the blond one look like Ellen Degeneres?

  • SerferTJ

I’m kind of surprised that they made it onto SNL cuz that’s not their usual market, but good for them!

Wake me up when the girl group craze comes back…although they should probably stop trying because no girl group will ever ever match the perfection of Girlicious, but whatever…

  • justemry

The 1D boys are cute and all, but “Beautiful” is as Nickelodeon bubble-gum tacky as “Glad You Came” is dancefloor generic.

  • animasaurus

I kind of think TW having a top 5 hit makes them more successul than one direction in the US personally. I don’t really see 1D  becoming huge stateside with a terribad song like WMYB tbh.

  • LizzyG

    YAY! Love these boys!

  • garrisonb

glad you came is so much better than anything 1D has released or will ever released. you’re delusional prophet…

  • nonminti

yup, gotta admit it,you Prophet live up to your name :)

  • nonminti

absolutely correct.Big Bang is my Universe.THEY ROCK MY WORLD.Sorry, going back to dance to my fantastic babies ;)

I don’t think that boy bands will ever be big as they used to be in the 90s ,the wanted and one direction each have only big hit but will they be able to follow through with a lot of hits and sell millions of records, i doubt it although i love gald you came

I agree about Glad You Came. It’s especially better than that horrid What Makes You Beautiful song. Like, Glad You Came is generic and tacky but that shit isn’t??? OK

for the record, NSYNC and Backstreet Boy’s respective first singles were no where as big as Glad You Came and What Makes You Beautiful. It took them a few singles to get their big hits. Come to think of it, without wikipedia-ing it up, what was their first singles? Oh.

  • Zachery Gonido

forget 1d and the wanted… they have good songs but their pretty boring in their live performances… BIGBANG is the band im intersted in… u guys shud look them up

  • Zachery Gonido

bigbang is a band that everyone could love… even straight guys lyk myself… in my opinion they shudnt even be called a boyband…bigbang is an all star team of music… a super group…
NKOTBSB, NSYNC*, Take That, Westlife, JLS, The Wanted, and 1D cant touch them…
p.s im new 2 twitter so follow me please  @ZachN1VIP:twitter

I like 1D The Wanted and Big Bang. However if push comes to shove I will pick Big Bang over all others. 1D and the wanted all have good songs. 1D more than this is just really good. The Wanted’s heart vacancy is on replay, and every Big Bang song is GREAT! But right now I especially love Bad Boy. I just all the groups fans can get along pleas!!

  • Ptrsung

er Big Bang is benefitting from One Direction?  WTF are you smoking?
Its the OTHER WAY AROUND.  One Direction wouldn’t even fucking exist without KPOP bands making groups popular again in the first place.  Give credit where credit is due.

  • Trendmonitor

one direction and wanted oh their lame.. its time to put BigBang on Newyork Times Magazene frontpage! lol

  • Rimsha

    i luv zayn malik & i dont care <3
