RUMOR: No Rih-release for Rihanna; new album due this summer!
It’s no secret that pop star Rihanna has been in and out of the studio recently recording new music, but it’s been unclear exactly what the new music is intended for. Now to help clear up some of the confusion pop websites Neon Limelight and Johnny Ikon are both reporting that they’ve received exclusive word that Rihanna is NOT planning to rih-release her latest album Rated R, and is instead working on a whole new album due for release this Summer.
While the source at Def Jam tells Ikon the quick push to release a new album is because “Ri wants to get across that she’s moved on from the dark period she was in when recording the ‘Rated R’ songs,” our source says that’s only part of the reason. The label is said to be unhappy with Rated R’s current performance. The album has been certified platinum in the United States and has had two top 10 singles with another, the snappy island-flavored “Rude Boy,” moving up the charts quickly, but it appears it hasn’t yet lived up to the label’s big projections or massive investments.
Our source says “Rude Boy” will likely be Rated R’s final single with the new album and tour taking priority after promotion ends. {Source 1}
Asked about what we should expect from Rihanna’s new album, my insider continued: “Ri wants to get across that she’s moved on from the dark period she was in when recording the ‘Rated R’ songs. So expect more upbeat, dance tunes, similar to ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ and ‘Disturbia’. {Source 2}
David Guetta and Ne-Yo have both already confirmed that they’ll be working with Rihanna on new music, and RiRi herself told MTV last week that her next album will have more “energetic, up-tempo pop records”.
Rated R was only released towards the end of November last year, but releasing a new album so soon won’t be a first for Rihanna since her first three albums all came out within about a year of each other.

Def too soon for her to be releasing a new album, there are other songs on Rated R that are single worthy such as Firebomb, Rockstar 101, and Photographs
Geez Def Jam, you’re gonna make people suffer from Rihanna overload. Why not use some of that music business power to promote other artists who need the push.
I still have an issue that Rated R is certified platinum when it has only sold 660K in the US. (There must be a lot of stock in stores)
I dunno about releasing a new album so soon, but I’m somewhat over Rated R. You can tell it was more like therapy to record some songs and get over the whole Chris situation. It’d be better for her not to ride this album out so long like she did GGGB.

Well, I LOVE Rihanna’s music (don’t love HER so much), so I’d love to get more of it soon, so it’s great that there probably will be very soon.
Though “Rated R” is – in my opinion – RiRi’s best album so far. I like darker musical themes in general. My favourite songs are “G4L”, “Cold Case Love”, “The Last Song”, “Wait Your Turn” and “Fire Bomb” and don’t don’t don’t like Ne-Yo-Joints and hope it will be reduced to a few on a new album.
If it’s due around summer, is she going to have any time for this supposed Rated R tour she’s doing?

It’s gonna be good if this rumor is true because Rihanna’s music is very catch and repetetive and she would probably be making the perfect songs for the summer. @goons Rated R didn’t flop. It’s still selling. It’s gonna be platinum pretty soon. I know it was certified platinum a while ago but that was based on shipments, not the actual sales. To date it’s sold 600,000+ and it’s growing everyday.
This is what I don’t like about labels, how can you be certified platinum before officially hitting gold? (She was certified when there was about 450k if I recall correctly) That meant there were more CDs sitting on shelves than sold. That number has changed, but it still doesn’t sit right.
And no, in these days, I wouldn’t call it a flop. However, it is not selling nearly as well as it should. She doesn’t have Heidi numbers, but she definitely doesn’t have SuBo’s either. Or even Sade who managed to outsell her in her second week.
^ good point. I hate to make comparisons, but you’re right. It took Sade 2 weeks to get the sales numbers that took 2 months for Rihanna.
it’s not a new album. universal wants to do a joint release with rated r and a “new album”. similar in vein to The Fame Monster. you can still classify it as a re-release.
though, NOTHING is set in stone. these rumors that neonlimelight/etc posted originated by a poster on rihannadaily that has little idea of what’s really going on. Currently – it’s just an idea “floating”.
Also, Def Jam is more than satisfied with Rihanna’s sales. I also know where those rumors came from, & trust me…it’s 100% not credible. This had been planned before Rated R was even released.
For The Record: Rated R has done more at this point than GGGB did, and GGGB had higher production values. By the summer, Rated R will have sold over 2-2.5 million copies – that’ll be the 3rd biggest NEW release in 2009 for a female artist (Susan Boyle & Alicia Keys being the only bigger).

She should have turned Rated R into an EP, released three singles & a buzz track, and moved on. Then she could focus on a small tour and a quick break before heading back into the studio (sans NeYo…its time to cut ties) – with her next LP coming out next Nov./Dec. or right at the top of 2011.

Did they seriously post something they got off a forum? How do you know she’s doing an EP Fame Monster type thing?
neon limelight is one of the more credible blogs, but they do follow rumors at times.
regarding the def jam source saying it’s “underperforming expectations”; it has to do with one of rihannadaily’s webmaster posting hints at what’s going on. his contact and knowledge is more limited than he’s leading on. He’s also being very vague and implying things based on his own personal opinion. “Buy ‘Rated R’ again and they won’t have to release this.”/etc. What he doesn’t understand is this is not an issue of “failed expectations”, it’s simply another way for them to make more quick $$$. A re-release of some sort was always happening regardless of how successful Rated R was going to be.
Regarding my knowledge of the release of Rated R + “new album” mesh…you’ll just have to see
As I said though, nothing is in serious planning stages yet. A few producers/writers have been contacted, and that’s about the extent of this.

as for xoxo, its not a rumor that def jam is not happy with the sales its a fact…neon or rihanna daily is not the first to be taking about this…rihanna had THE biggest marketing campaign last year and still going till today…to date in america she has sold the same as sade who has been mia for 10 years..you think def jam is happy about that??? let me bring to closer to home..Rihanna and Trey songz sales are almost at par in america and u think that is good for her?? Regarding the fame monster, i believe it could not be classified as a re-release as i recall…it was classified as its own album which makes it gaga’s second or something to that effect that is why when it came to sales it had to be counted separately..Also when it comes to Rated R it was actually a last minute decison..Rihanna was recording something different at the time and was told to scrap it and do Rated R hence close to the release she was still in studio working on it and getting her promo pics/looks done..This new abum was never pre-planned as Rated R was supposed to do good!!
oh and does gaga not count as a 2009 release??? we can skip her if you want…It dnt matter anyways coz by summer 2010 many other females will have have outsold rihanna who released last year…makes no difference!!

@ marymag Britney has had her new album planned and already started recording it before The Singles Collection was even released which was never exprected to do well……it was just a lil throw away album for fans and many fans didn’t buy it cause we already have the tracks. I bought the boxset tho!

I can understand why her first 3 albums were released within 18 months, but ‘Rated R’ is actually doing good. It’s not an overnight success, but she’s already gotten 2 Top 10s and a likely 3rd with “Rude Boy.” In the past Rihanna’s first two albums just weren’t selling. I don’t know why people are acting surprised that she’s selling like this, Rihanna was never a big album seller to begin with. She’s more of a singles artist, but was lucky that people actually caught on to GGGB. I think with the chart successes of SuBo, Whitney, Sade and even Alicia and Mary J. shows that middle-aged women will still buy music. Rihanna just turned 22 and still fits in with the young audience, so while they might not be buying her albums she is definitely getting a lot of support. I think those people who didn’t buy the album will see her show, so there’s other means to be successful. Rihanna is doing great to not have put out a “Don’t Stop the Music” or “Disturbia” part two. There’s not a lot of black female artists that are selling well nowadays anyway, Whitney, Sade, Beyonce, Alicia, Mary and Janet benefit from being in the game for years, but Rihanna is still pretty fresh on the scene.

Sounds like another case of My December syndrome. The label isn’t happy with the performance of an album so they force the artist to go back to more commercial music in hopes of making more money, whether the artist likes it or not.

I think Ne-Yo had it right when he said that with this new album we would hear somethings from Rihanna that nobody is expecting. I think we can all agree that it’s a darker album but it’s also a risk that she could scare off those fans that she gained with the whole Umbrella thing. Like I personally don’t have a problem with her having new music but at the same time I’m all gunho for the whole music she has now because I don’t want to have another mariah carey on my hands.lol Releaseing new music because the first time around she couldn’t get it right.

Bottom line…..Rihanna’s vocals are lack luster and weak. It maybe be better for her to stick with up-beat fast tempo pop, as holding notes is not her strong point. I think she is beautiful young woman with great things ahead of her, but if I had to listen to her album without any tyoe of performance, I would push “eject” in a heart beat. She needs a vocal coach who is not afraid to be brutallty honest with her. It almost makes the consumer feel cheated when they see artists resort to “barely there” sex appeal to help promote their music, yet they display poor vocals as though we are all tone deaf…I’m sorry, but I just want to hear “good singing” along with an equally good performance. Maybe she has just reached her peak. I still say she is beautiful person who should use some down time to focus more on modeling….
