[New Music] Marina and the Diamonds releases “Homewrecker”

I love me some Marina and the Diamonds, but just like Katy Perry, I believe she’s the kind of woman who would do anything for a hit if given half the chance. If Jimmy Iovine phoned up Marina and told her that she’d get a guaranteed top ten placing on the Hot 100 by releasing an old Paris Hilton b-side, getting naked in the song’s music video, and giving him a blowjob in the back of McDonalds, I think she’d do it, and then she’d go and call it a biting commentary on modern pop culture.

We first heard Marina’s move into the mainstream with the amazing, Stargate-produced “Radioactive”, and now we can hear some more of her new dance-pop sound on “Homewrecker”. The song isn’t her next single –that’s “Primadonna”–, it’s just a free download released on her website for some buzz.

Marina’s clearly gone for a more commercial style to try and worm her way to the top of the charts, but the thing that I love most about her is how she still manages to put her own spin on everything and add some substance to a usually empty genre. “Radioactive” was rich and wonderfully-written, and the same goes for “Homewrecker”. She keeps things fresh on the electro-pop tune, speaking the verses through a vocal filter, before wielding her famously high voice on the hook as she shrieks about being Alicia Keys wrecking homes.

It’s certainly not my favorite cut from Marina, but it’s catchy and interesting, and I can appreciate that.

Now bring on “Primadonna”.

“Homewrecker” is available for free via Marina’s official website

Amazing, I’m sure if the Spice girls were still releasing music this would be it!

Although I don’t particularly enjoy her voice, well… the speaking part was nice!

her big ass deep voice just doesn’t go with this type of over-produced music. It’s unbearable to listen to.

I completely love it. It’s way better than radioactive and it’s not so close to her previous work that we can’t see evolution (like Fear & Loathing).

  • John Norman

I love it! Not as much as radioactive but its a great song to fill out the collection of new music.

“then she’d go and call it a biting commentary on modern pop culture” so right lol.Still, I’m obsessing over this.

what makes you think she’s so desperate for a hit?  just cause she worked with Stargate?  even with people like Stargate and Dr. Luke behind her, I don’t think she’ll get one.  her lyrics are way too weird for top 40 radio.

but you’re spot on the biting commentary bit, haha.

I like this a lot.  I didn’t instantly love it like I did Radioactive, but after several listens I’m hooked.  can’t wait for the album! only…a couple more months to go :(

She has basically said in the past that she would do anything for a hit… And that she was surprised she wasn’t more successful with the first album.

That’s why she worked with mainstream producers.

It’s a little like Patrick Wolf – he said he recorded some stuff with a mainstream producer and then decided against it.  I think all musicians crave a little more recognition.

I think your commentary on this one was a bit untrue, and agree the diss comparing her to Katy Perry of all people was way out of line!

    Exactly, thanks Tony!

TBH Patrick’s music isn’t as weird as Marina’s so I’m SO confused about why he isn’t huge already… All the magazines always give his albums top marks but he just can’t catch a break but i don’t think he cares about sales as much as Marina anyway, he makes a good living touring and stuff.
Marina’s first album did go Gold in the UK and Ireland though so it’s not like she didn’t get any sales, she should have stuck with her out there music and just evolved it with this second album.
“Radioactive” and “Fear & Loathing” are FLAWLESS and this song is ok but if she doesn’t have anything like her old music on the new album she’ll lose quite a few fans i think.
