Just when you though that Nelly Furtado couldn’t possibly be any more perfect, she goes and outs herself as a K-Pop fan.
During a press conference in Singapore to promote her new album, Nelly not only revealed that she was a fan of Psy’s current viral sensation “Gangnam Style”, but also that she wanted T.O.P. to feature “Big Hoops”, but was unable to get in touch with the BIGBANG rapper.
“Your average K-Pop artist is not so easy to phone up on the phone,” she laughed. “I wanted T.O.P. on Big Hoops! My friend played me T.O.P. and some other artist. He sent me some links about a-year-and-a-half, two-years ago, and I was like, ‘oh wow, this is amazing!‘, and I just really liked it.”
She then continued, revealing that she’s aiming for an Asian pop collabo sometime in the future.
“It’s in the works. We’ll see what happens. I foresee a collaboration of some kind with a K-Pop or J-Pop artist. I definitely love what they’re doing. I think it’s very entertaining and creative and fun.”
When discussing her love of Psy’s new hit “Gangnam Style”, Nelly said: “I’ve already enjoyed K-Pop over the years. I’m really lucky enough to live in a city where you can go to a little Korean BBQ place and watch as much K-Pop as you want.”
“I have very eclectic taste,” she continued. “I enjoy everything. So now it’s like a playground of musical styles. You can find anything you want online. Doing the Spanish album [Mi Plan] was good for me because it reminded me that there’s a whole world of music outside of North American pop, and I’ve never felt like I really identified completely with North American pop music. I’ve always felt more like an international artist.”
Queen Nelly has spoken. The irony is that Psy’s “Gangnam Style” and BIGBANG are probably the closest thing to North American pop coming out of Korea, but we’ll let that slide.
