Natalia Kills teases return with “Controversy” viral single

Kween Natalia Kills is back with a pretentious-but-still-cool-if-you-ignore-some-of-the-lyrics buzz single / viral video called “Controversy”.

In the video, Natalia poses like a fierce bitch, hands on hips with a “judging you right now tbh” stare while ’90s VHS effects flicker around her. She occasionally changes position to blow-dry her hair or jump on a trampoline.

“Controversy” is the first official taste of Natalia’s upcoming sophomore album, Trouble, tentatively due early next year. In an interview with yours truly back in June, Natalia revealed that Trouble was produced by Jeff Bhasker and Emile Haynie, who were behind Kid Cudi’s albums and Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die. She also described it as “noisy and chaotic”, which definitely applies “Controversy”.

Check out Natalia’s latest below.

“Push the button dont push the button” – Madonna

  • Luke

She really is the definition of a try hard. Sorry. Broke is a nice song tho.

  • Cactass

I love her. She’s a fierce ass bitch. She’ll never be mainstream but that’s why I like her. As long as she’s making dark pretentious pop I’m a fan.

  • Alex K

This sucks and is pretentious and try-hard as shit. I fucking love Perfectionist, too, so I’m most definitely not a hater. I was looking forward to new Natalia Kills but this is crap. I want more like Nothing Lasts Forever and Love Is a Suicide and Free and Wonderland and other good shit from that album.

  • Priscilla

You are jumping the gun. Natalia has stated that this is purely a video teaser. It most likely lays out themes/subject matter she will be exploring on her album- her “fucked-up generation” as related to technology and social relaionships etc. So you cannot watch this and think it will reflect all the songs on her album. Google search “Stop me” live to actually hear something from the album. “Stop Me” is brilliant!

  • SerferTJ

Is it pretentious? Yes. But at least it’s fun!!!
And Natalia’s music at least has some good humor, so she isn’t sucking the fun out of everything like Gags, Charlie XCX, and Sky Ferrera.
For just a buzz single, I say it’s damn good!
“Lookin down my shirt like Disneyland, like you waitin for a fast-pass”

  • Max

Never was a fan of her but this song is BEAST!

  • fyeahgong

    I love the beat

  • Caca

It’s Charli XCX and she’s flawless and fun. Saw her live and she’s an angel.

  • shamelesskclarkstan

    ah! ah! ah!

::grabs ball sac in fits of joy::

she kills me with her essence good GOD this made my night. saw her live last year and it was tasteful trash you (aka, I) only wish you could pull off while dancing alone in your nyc studio apt.
    happy bottoms unite!

  • shamelesskclarkstan

    for serious.
telling myself that was a purposeful shout out to an inspiration… and that she asked for permission in advance…

  • Anon

This sounds like something off of MIA’s Maya as done by Britney Spears.

  • Blow Me

Pink’s been releasing her album bit by bit all week and you’re talking about this washed up wannabe?

  • dd

Holy mother of fierceness, that video was hot!

  • Chakra

    This is ironic…

  • maliboomer88

It’s like Laurie Anderson for the mentally slow. I mean that in the best possible way.

  • Blow Me

is it? because “Blow Me” hit Top 10 and her two singles before that were #1 and #2 :-

  • http://davidsask.wordpress.com/ DavidSask

This sucks so hardcore and if this is a teaser (should be explained is not any kind of song) for her SONGS then she is done for good!!

This is gold! wtf!!!! seriously i wanna see fucking nicki minaj whip some fucking songs out like this. the words she uses are fucking amazing. she has an image and she sticks to it! i dont fucking see katy perry doing this shit either!? Honestly she is a visionary and an artist! this is art for the ears! get with it!

This is basically how Madonna’s American Life would sound in 2012. Not as good, tho.

  • Alex K

Pop albums that attempt social commentary almost NEVER work. The closest anyone’s coming to doing it right recently is Lily Allen (Everyone’s At It, 22…), and even that’s not anything great.I have pretty low expectations, if this is a prelude. I want her to stick to her dark lyrics.

BITCHES, this is what Gaga should have been doing all along. And I’m so happy that at least Natalia got it. Yes, it’s pretentious, but it’s fun, it’s sassy, it’s fucked up. Hands down for this woman. She did it. And it’s not even an official single. Plus I saw her live and she rocks.

  • ATL

tell ‘em, hun! i saw her too and she was so fierce on stage and such an angel afterwards, hanging out with her fans and taking pictures. i just love her!

  • Shawnna

    boom!

  • KB

    Exactly!

  • http://twitter.com/charliekelso C. K.

what about this disney font? uh oh…

  • http://twitter.com/erokawai1987 ~ ERO-KAWAI! ~

I even got to take pictures with her. :) She was amazing. One of the best moments ever.

  • http://twitter.com/erokawai1987 ~ ERO-KAWAI! ~

Honey god knows I love me some Pink. But I cannot see why we or proph should even be bothering with her…she rejects any form of evolution and reinvention. The last time I was intrigued in her music was in 2003. Fun House was good, but sorry you can’t be serving up the same ish, every 2 years. “The Truth About Love” is a snooze fest and a rehash of everything she’s done over the last decade and it’s not even good. Don’t come here…calling Natalia washed up, when your fav is the one not able to think out of the box for once. AMEN! I’m out!

  • No

“be delusional don’t be delusional” – You

  • http://twitter.com/Lewis_Lewinsky Lewis Bennett

I literally cannot stop listening to this! Perfectionist was perfection lol and I’m sure Trouble is gonna be even better! Can’t FUCKING WAIT!

  • Patrick

I totally agree “art before chart” but there’s the only artistic thing about this video clip is the design, which she didn’t do. the song is pretentious. and from what I’ve heard from Pink’s new stuff, she’s changing up her formula. her colab with fun. is great and her next single, Try, is fire!

  • Jeff

Anyone else getting a Vanity 6′s “make-up” vibe from this?!!!!

  • CR

The vibe is more Peaches than anything else. But to be honest..its quite refreshing. She isnt trying to hard she always used videos to create a persona. Im curious…wasnt the biggest fan so far but I want more. Thanks for the post!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1605936522 Michael Cristian Chavez

Well why do you compare her to pink? they are nothing alike? Pink is nice and all but she doesn’t have the artistic capability that Natalia Kills has shown us in the past and this is another great example. Everyone’s entitled to there own opinion but maybe not everyone understands the concept.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1605936522 Michael Cristian Chavez

AMEN! Pink sings the same thing over and over! shes the original Taylor Swift bahahahaha

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1605936522 Michael Cristian Chavez

It is one of her inspirations

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1127181558 Andrés Felipe Rodríguez

It’s kind of Peaches meets some Robyn I love it, I think she’s going foward unlike others and the way she use the pretentious of her lyrics she uses in some sarcastic way that makes them cleaver and funny, I think she is going great so far. Always under-apreciate artist go better on their music than on the charts and chart people always do bad on their music but good on the charts.

  • iAmAwesome

    So.. don’t drink the Kool-Aid?

  • Patrick

I’m not even sure how Pink got pulled into this comment section but saying she doesn’t have the artistic capability Natalia has?! you’re right, her performance of “Glitter in the Air” wasn’t a spectacle or anything. everyone *is* entitled to their own opinion, and *my* opinion is this: This song sounds like she quizzed a punk rock high schooler on the edgiest ideas they could think of and she rhymed them the best she could. “fuck you for a mcdonald’s” WUT? come on. please don’t patronize me by saying I don’t understand the concept. I understand the “concept” just fine — and it sucks.

  • Patrick

    *this* lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Trevor-Szuba-Schneider/100000290157462 Trevor Szuba-Schneider

i thoroughly enjoyed everything about the song & visual. A+

  • http://twitter.com/FauxKingLuke Luke

I wouldn’t say that because up to “I’m not dead” she was evolving, she’s now stuck in a rut though while Taylor will still be singing about mean boys when she’s 60 lol

  • Purple Crush

reductive, maybe, but delusional? its called cultural referencing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1127181558 Andrés Felipe Rodríguez

You know I beeb jammin’ this song since came out in my head for days…and I kind of interpolate in my head “Serpentine”…now I know where I have heard something “alike” before…
