[Music Video] Crystal Kay – “Forever”

One of the things I’ve loved so much about the current Crystal Kay era is how positive and fun everything’s been. During a time when most pop artists’ idea of a feel good record is singing over a generic electro beat about letting loose in the club and yelling something at the DJ, it’s refreshing to see Crystal giving us something sweeter and more substantial.

Following her flawless flops “Superman” and “Delicious na Kinyoubi”, Crystal’s serving up more love and light with her latest single “Forever”. It hits stores today, and will be used to lead in her next studio album Vivid, which drops at the end of this month.

“Forever” is probably my least favorite CK single this era, but that’s not exactly a negative thing considering how great her recent stuff has been. It’s an upbeat europop record with some slight tribal influences and a super happy vibe. You know straight away that it’s J-Pop because the beat is kind of cheap and outdated, but in the best way possible.

The music video is really nice, especially as far as CK’s trademark recession specials are concerned. Homegirl gives some serious Fiji vacation-on-a-budget realness as she dances and parties outdoors on some island for about 24 hours straight. The clip may recall Beyawnce’s “Deja Vu” or Riyawna’s “Where Have You Been” videos to some with all the getting down amongst nature ish, but unlike those two aforementioned whores, Crystal Kay keeps things classy. She doesn’t need to pop her octopussoir or skeez up against some man to have a good time.

Check out “Forever” below, and please pre-order Crystal Kay’s Vivid so it doesn’t completely tank. Her new label needs a decent reason not to drop her after the performance of her recent singles.

if you copy Alexis Jordan, do it good. horrible.

  • theprophetblog

I don’t think anybody is out to copy that flop LOL. Crystal has sold a trillion times more records than her.

But what did this copy anyway? Now I’m curious to see Alexis’ since the only song of hers I really know is the Happiness one. Shehad some others on the radio here in Australia but they were all horrible so I never saw the music video

  • tjoz

The closest Alexis Jordan song this comes to is maybe Good Girl but other than that nothing both Alexis or Crystal do is identical. Cant even remember anything of Alexis album other than Happiness, Good Girl, Hush Hush and another song. Apart from 3 songs I can remember and a 4th one not sure if it was hers or not her album was pretty full of filler. Thats Roc Nation’s problem for pushing her out as Beyonce/Christina Milian lite. Like that other one they got on that label that is the Rihanna lite.

Unless Alexis did a guide track for Crystal then that is something else.

  • Joey

The video immediately reminded me of the video Happiness from Alexis and then the song kept going and it reminded me of something Alexis recorded but didn’t made the final cut.

And what’s with everybody calling artists a flop. Alexis may be a flop but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy her music.

I agree with a lot of what you said, this is my least favourite single this era but it still slays on “Spin the music” era and the video is cute although she didn’t dampen the vibe by standing INDOORS next to some rustic pillar and potted plant lmao
I’m still amazed that CK went from being a stiff two stepper to busting some hot choreography at any opportunity, this proves that if CK can do it so can basic try less bitches like Rihanna (she gets a gold star for “WHYB” choreo), Keri Flopson and Mariah Carey (If your gonna mime why not pop your pussy to “Dream Lover”???).
Hope bitches actually go out and buy this album, I dunno what went wrong sales wise (oh yeah… Sony) but her Greatest Hits album actually sold more copies than “Colour Change” which both went “Gold” and then “FLASH” and “Spin the Music” flopped into oblivion ~_~
This album sounds like it’s gonna be hot as fxck though and I’m looking forward to the customary CK english track per album.

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

I see you there Jay Z… nobody is giving enough of a fxck about Alexis Jordan to even play her on youtube let alone Jack her music… call me when she’s on her 10th album like CK.

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

JPop is cheap and outdated? That KPop’s been messing with your mind.

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

The only similarities between this video and Happiness is that they are both bright and fun, I don’t see how dancing in the back of a mansion is the same as Alexis walking around some CGI wonderland…
Also name that song, calling people flops is just talk, CK is flopping too atm but her songs are still amazing… Alexis’s mostly aren’t though.

  • theprophetblog

A lot of J-Pop is when it comes to the main J-divas or idol pop, so I made the comment in reference to that part of J-Pop.

I’m not talking Capsule, Tomoko Kawase, and that kind of stuff.

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

I dunno… It’s probably down to personal taste, the reason I’m more into J-Pop is that the artists seem to have a more diverse range of sounds even if they are outdated to some people, most of K-Pop (that i hear) is just hopping from one trend to the next like it is here in the West.

  • theprophetblog

No offense boo but you always say that yet the only K-Pop you seem to love or bother listening to is the American mainstream stuff like 2NE1, BoA, 4minute, BIGBANG etc -_-

K-Pop is WAY more diverse than that and so far from just American genre hopping.

It’s just like somebody assuming that all J-Pop is AKB48 type stuff,

You were even surprised/shocked when you heard that SISTAR song that was R&B, when so much of K-Pop is urban and R&B like that. You def need to start listening to more K-Pop/K-indie artists like Sunny Hill, Clazziquai, Brown Eyed Girls, IU, Neon Bunny, 10cm etc.

Japan has heaps of creativity and diversity if you look enough into and don’t just judge on the surface, and so does K-Pop.

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

I agree I have a pretty shallow knowledge of K-Pop but most of what I see is groups, I’m not really a fan of boy groups anyway so minus BIGBANG i never listen to others and girlgroups in K-Pop that i do see are all mostly the same sounding minus a few of the big ones i like such as 2NE1, Wonder Girls, Brown Eyed Girls etc
I mostly think that in K-Pop there’s a lot more originality with solo singers but they generally get way less exposure (as far as i can see) unless they’re really big like BoA.

Maybe it’s just that K-Pop is generally more dance pop orientated than J-Pop and i’m so sick to death of Dance pop lol

  • theprophetblog

It’s true the soloists don’t get as much exposure. But not all the groups are typical dance-pop. There’s rockier ones, pop, urban etc.

Lots of K-Pop is actually urban or inspired by older pop trends.

I’m sure if you start listening to more you will be surprised and find how much more you like than you originally thought. I used to think J-Pop was messy outside of Utada and Kumi lol and now I love it and think it’s amazing and listen to lots of diff japanese artists.

Real cute 80′s sounding pop song! She can sing! Now she should cross over to the US and release a English Language Album! FYI she is featured on Far East Movement’s song Where The Wild Things Are off their Dirty Bass Album out June 12th,she sings entirely in English on that song! Has she done any other songs in English?!

  • Kevin

    True!

  • theprophetblog

She sure has. She’s half black, half Korean, even though she’s a Japanese singer haha. She speaks English 100% fluently.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1172051246 James Smith III

SHE tried to crossover years ago and flopped unfortunately

  • http://twitter.com/Melo_R0 Mel R

She never tried to crossover, she released an English language album (Which consisted of B sides and English versions of some songs on  her Album 4 real), but it wasn’t released outside of Japan.

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

She released an English album in Japan but it wasn’t really an attempt to push it, it was mostly B-Sides and English versions of songs on her “4 Real” album like @twitter-522566310:disqus said. She also has done a few English songs that have been on her Japanese albums like “It’s a crime”, “Hold on” and she’s covered Michael Jackson’s “Ben” and “Human Nature”.

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

LOL I agree… I have to get the passion back to delve deeper into both K and J-Pop… Lately even with J-Pop i can’t be asked to even look because the wave of shitty AKB48 kind of acts that are running things there piss me off… I just stick to my old faves atm like Utada, Kumi, Ayu, Crystal and Namie… I have just discovered Meg though and I love her new single “Trap” so i’ll probably start digging further into both genres soon. Especially in K-Pop atm since all the bigger artists are on the comeback trail.

  • Kevin

Yeah, thanks for the answer! I searched on her discography on Wikipedia and it said it was released in Japan in 2003 or so.So their just English versions of her Korean songs right?! Oh yeah I forget about It’s A Crime being English.

  • Kevin

Thanks for the reply! Actually she never tried to cross over to the US,that album was a Japan only release composed of English versions of album tracks and b-sides from the 4 Real album.

Crystal previous released ‘Forever’ digitally in the last week of May.  On Tuesday 6/6, ‘Forever’ was released physically in Japan and it didnt even break the daily Oricon TOP 50 Singles Chart

In kpop news in Japan, 2PM single “Beautiful” and T-ara’s 1st Jpn album “Jewely Box” was released the same day on 6/6

    1) 2PM sold 73K+ of their single on their 1st day of release which is amazing and shows how 2PM is having real success there.
    2) T-ara “Jewelry Box” sold 23k on their 1st day.  This is very disappointing for them (especially when there were predictions of 300k total sold)

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

English versions of her Japanese songs. She doesn’t sing in Korean.

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

There is more to Japanese music than that. I’ve never been able to deal with J-idols.

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

OMG this! KPop has gotten so samey since the boom began that I got tired of it for the most part in 2010.

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

Korean music does have some diversity in it but it lacks compared to the West and Japan. The West and Japan are more accepting of different sounds than Korea. I’ve had K-indie stans openly tell me that most non-idol Korean music is nothing more than background music. It’s not meant to excite. My favorite act in the world right now got to #6 this week with their new single. Would this happen in Korea?

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

OMG Meg is horrible to be honest. I went outside the main J-divas pretty much as soon as I got into JPop. I need more. Plus Ayu’s earlier worked was horrible to be honest and Namie never did it for me.

  • theprophetblog

No country in the world has the off the wall creativity of Japan, but that doesn’t mean that Korea is solely generic just because it isn’t AS creative as Japan, when nowhere else is.

And K-Pop music is WAY more diverse than Western pop music, but that’s only if you’re talking pop. If not, then America is more diverse than everywhere in the world because it’s thebiggest music market and has country, rap, R&B, dance etc, and lots of it, but if you’re just talking pop, K-Pop is 100x more diverse.

K-Pop pulls from J-Pop, Europop, and Amerian music, not SOLELY American music like haters like to say. It borrows from them all and mashes it all up.

And K-Indie is amazing. It’s much more than background music lol, I don’t know why anybody would say that unless they’re complimenting how a lot of is it relaxing and subtle, like these for example…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvdUwZJlWpU

I think both J-Pop and K-Pop are amazing in their own ways and there’s more than first meets the eye from both of them/

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

I haven’t listened to Meg’s older stuff only her new single “Trap” which was made after she’d ditched her longtime producer and is pretty amazing, have you heard it? It sounds pretty French lol which isn’t surprising since Meg splits her time between Tokyo and Paris.
As for Namie I only really got into her stuff since “Queen of Hip-Hop” which is when she switched sounds and I’ve been into Ayu since “Next Level” but I’m starting to go back and look at her older material mainly from when she performs them on tour, “A song for xx” is amazing and that was from her first Avex album (2nd overall).

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

Yup CK is flopping, but her music is still flawless so no shade can ever touch her lol

P.S Whoever thought “Jewellery Box” was gonna sell 300k first week in Japan is crazy, they haven’t even had a single go Gold.

  • geojyo

@29aa7560ec342356a4b62fa003a73ca8:disqus that was their best 1st day sales yet tho… it’s actually selling decently for an album full of remakes.
@twitter-49589264:disqus ”Bo Peep Bo Peep” went gold twice for mobile downloads and PC downloads…

  • http://twitter.com/Melo_R0 Mel R

For the Most part the Main J-Diva release the same shit over and over again, but in watered down form. Namie and Utada are the only main j-divas that change up their music with each release, which is why I prefer their music (More so Utada). But I Agree that if you want to find good music in the Japanese music, you need to step out of the mainstream, but it’s like that pretty much anywhere haha. Although there are some exceptions  of course. Most of the artists I listen to now are flops in Japan lol. Not having certified releases has become a requirement for the artists I listen to lol J/k

  • Plastic Boom

Crystal Kay is hands down one of Jpop’s best, a shame that she’s overshadowed by talentless groups like AKB48 and Morning Musume who CAN’T SING!

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

I never said Korean music was solely generic. It does have some diversity. A little, but some. I don’t really think KPop is that diverse. I would say it’s about on the same level of diversity as Western pop. I think Japan is almost as diverse as the US when it comes to various genres of music. I don’t think that KPop pulls soley from American music. It gets alot of influence from European pop just like American pop does now. In regards to K-Indie, I’m not here for coffee shop music. I do like Neon Bunny though. One of the few K-Indie acts I actually like:

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

Ayu does switch it up but she does have her standby sounds I will admit.

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

Next Level is Ayu’s best album. I heard the new Meg and I wasn’t a fan.

    Drawn Together reference!
