[Music Video] BIGBANG – “Monster”

After BIGBANG‘s hit-and-miss Tonight mini-album, I was totally surprised when the boys came out and slayed with Alive. Minus that woeful Daesung solo, there wasn’t one song on that album that was anything less than great, easily making Alive one of the strongest urban/pop releases of the year.

Naturally, Alive has been repackaged and re-released with a new single “Monster”, which premiered earlier tonight at the exact same time as Wonder Girls’ “Like This” (WONDERBANG!).

“Monster” sees BIGBANG treading familiar territory by returning to the melodic dance-ballad sound of “Haru Haru”. they’re a band that like to stick to their mainstream lane of commercial Hip-Hop and Pop, but they’ve mastered it to a point where they rarely end up sounding derivative or generic like most American acts from the same genre do. “Monster” might be a little formulaic, but there’s a nice emotional undercurrent that runs through it that elevates the song up. And of course, the vocals are beautiful, the harmonies are gorgeous, and the rapping is as amazing as always.

If “Monster” isn’t wild enough for you, then the video should suffice. It’s like an evil version of “Fantastic Baby”, with the same kind of high avante-garde fashion, only much darker and more sinister. The boys have been making more of an effort to assert themselves as fashion leaders in K-Pop, so if they haven’t already snatched SHINee’s wig in the style stakes yet, then they will after this.

And do I even need to mention T.O.P.’s flawless ensemble? He’s the sexiest thing on the entire planet. I’m gonna need him to stop by my place and show me how he got his nickname. Who am I kidding; they could all get it now. Even Daesung, who somehow suddenly got hot this year.

HATE this song. It reminds me too much of 2ne1′s ugly judging by that fucking wretched line “BABY I LOVE U IM NOT A MONSTER”. Dreadful! That whole line ruined the whole thing for me LOLOL

gorgeous video and useless single! i loved the song, but let’s face it’s just a publicity stunt to keep up the hype now their soon to leave on tour. anyhow, bigbang is always a trustworthy source of decent pop music, not only on k-pop field but culturaly worldwide nowadays with the laziness of the western acts all around.

I’m sorry to swim upstream but for me they’ve jumped the shark visually. It’s like it has grow apart their music, their voices…

  • http://twitter.com/superwaqs bougie shit.

I absolutely love the song and video! Everything about it worked except the blonde mushroom on G-Dragon’s head. Taeyang looked flawless as always. Daesung’s vocals were on point in the chorus. Seungri sounded beautiful in the bridge, and TOP is just the definition of cool.

I’m actually really disappointed they won’t be performing this on any shows in Korea!

  • johnnybravo831

AAAANNNNDDD we’re back on the same page. lol.

Exactly the same thoughts on Daesung all of a sudden becoming one who could get it. I’m still a Seungri/TOP guy but yeah, they could all get it after this.
I’ve said it before: I’ve never been a Big Bang stan, but after this I’m going back through their discography and remembering where I was when I was first introduced to Lies and Haru Haru and it’s carving out a special place in my heart for Big Bang. I can deny them no longer!

And of course, right when I decide they’re ok to love, they won’t be promoting this single. =/

Glad to see their music evolving yet still having the BB feeling. I guess it’s up to the fans to jump on the wagon or get left behind with the same old pretty boy k-crap.

I don’t particularly appreciate Taeyang’s hair but TOP makes up for everyone. Here’s to hoping that Papa YG lets them promote on Inkigayo for a week…

  • aliceinreality

I think it’s vastly different from 2NE1′s UGLY, which deals more with their insecurities with their outer appearances, whereas BIGBANG is more about the inside (although the video highlights their appearances too). To me, the line is fine; it’s not the most poetic way to put it, but it gets the point across in this fast-paced dance-ballad.

I like it. It’ll be a good workout song haha

  • MrsTOP

I don’t think the song sounds formulaic. It is very different to other songs out there and it sounds like a pop opera. The melody is beautiful and epic. The video rocks. GD Slays, i love his red hair and his horns, Taeyang was on fire, that boy can move, Seungri’s voice was just so touching and beautiful, it suited the melancholy vibe of the song, TOP’s eyes was fierce, he is a very sexy vampire. Daesung is just amazing. He looks so good and his voice suits the chorus perfectly. Bigbang are the best boyband ever. I hope they continue to give us great, innovative, inspiring music.

This song rmember me Bigbang old times and i like it.
But i dont like the MV.

  • chibichibichibi

Listen to STILL ALIVE. It’s the full version of Alive intro on Bigbang’s previous album! I LOVE ITTTTTT <3 better than monster imo

  • JammySmoochie

Seungri stole the show for me. His parts were my favorite, although Daesung is a super close second. And T.O.P and his flawlessness… sigh, why so perfect? I love the song because it’s epic without trying too hard. It’s poignant and I can feel the pain of each member.

As for the MV, I neither love nor hate. Maybe because I don’t understand what’s going on, lol. And Taeyang’s homage to Mickey Mouse is atrocious. Can’t believe I’ll say this but, Taeyang needs his mohawk back.

If some of you commenting ever really took the time to read the lyrics or english subbed version, you’d know this is a very painful and sad song.  Knowing the lyrics to this song absolutely drove it home for me.  Also seeing the MV from the viewpoint of Wolverine Origins story (in the comic) makes the MV make total sense.  The point is, though their outward appearence change, their insides or “heart” is always the same.

  • Steveroni

    SEUNGRI. Effing hot.

The fact that he usually dresses the most straight out of the bunch makes him even hotter. And he’s voice is so damn sexy. I am here only for Seungri. And maybe a little bit of TOP.

  • BritneyLover

    Ugh T.OP. u sexy beast!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/taylorronald Ronald Taylor

Not here for Big Bang’s slow songs because the shit all sounds the same. But then again most Big Bang songs do in general…

  • http://www.facebook.com/cameronjoelspargo Cameron Joel Spargo

Usually not a fan of any of this stuff. But this I do actually like

  • http://twitter.com/Melo_R0 Mel R

Seungri is the only one who could get it in this PV. The other guys looked a hot mess. T.O.P is the only person that could wear that hat and get away with it though. I liked Seugnri’s Bar piercing… I kind of want one now.

  • mimifan

    taeyang i want your baby!

  • http://twitter.com/ericyumyum ericyumyum

I’m not really a big fan of male k-pop groups but Big Bang seems to be the one I can listen to and enjoy. I thought the video was visually stunning and I love the effects and everything. But the only thing I can complain about .. are their hairstyles..  but other than that, I think the song is nice and I like the concept of the song & video.

T.O.P – loving that look! Dayum!

NO WAY IS THE FULL VERSION OF ALIVE INTRO INCLUDED OMGOMGOGMOGMOGMOG

  • Nicky

Daesung is my least favorite (Gorilla lookin’ creature) so when the mini came out, I didn’t even give his solo a chance. I unchecked it. But then after a while I listened to it and I actually love. The whole mini is so flawless. This song is nice but I’m not crazy about it. My baby TOP is such a diva! I wish he had more lines

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1127181558 Andrés Felipe Rodríguez

damn you and you K-pop artist thanks to you I’m kind of addicted to BIGBANG, 2NE1 and Mamoiselle Yulia, btw this song is good but not that special, but the video as all korean artist videos rocks the hell out of me!

  • MrsTOP

Don’t be so mean to Deasung, i think he looks amazing in the video. He has grown into his looks, It is not about looks anyway, he has got a great personality, he is funny, polite and carries himself very well. They all look amazing in the video.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tzondo Tasha Zondo

i get what he means the pop element of the production of the song is quite formulaeic, but doesn’t stop it from being beautiful
