[Music Video] BIGBANG – “Monster”

After BIGBANG‘s hit-and-miss Tonight mini-album, I was totally surprised when the boys came out and slayed with Alive. Minus that woeful Daesung solo, there wasn’t one song on that album that was anything less than great, easily making Alive one of the strongest urban/pop releases of the year.
Naturally, Alive has been repackaged and re-released with a new single “Monster”, which premiered earlier tonight at the exact same time as Wonder Girls’ “Like This” (WONDERBANG!).
“Monster” sees BIGBANG treading familiar territory by returning to the melodic dance-ballad sound of “Haru Haru”. they’re a band that like to stick to their mainstream lane of commercial Hip-Hop and Pop, but they’ve mastered it to a point where they rarely end up sounding derivative or generic like most American acts from the same genre do. “Monster” might be a little formulaic, but there’s a nice emotional undercurrent that runs through it that elevates the song up. And of course, the vocals are beautiful, the harmonies are gorgeous, and the rapping is as amazing as always.

If “Monster” isn’t wild enough for you, then the video should suffice. It’s like an evil version of “Fantastic Baby”, with the same kind of high avante-garde fashion, only much darker and more sinister. The boys have been making more of an effort to assert themselves as fashion leaders in K-Pop, so if they haven’t already snatched SHINee’s wig in the style stakes yet, then they will after this.
And do I even need to mention T.O.P.’s flawless ensemble? He’s the sexiest thing on the entire planet. I’m gonna need him to stop by my place and show me how he got his nickname. Who am I kidding; they could all get it now. Even Daesung, who somehow suddenly got hot this year.
