miss A prepares for battle with BIGBANG

There’s gonna be some major K-Pop carnage this week when the biggest new girl group of the past two years miss A go up against K-Pop superstars BIGBANG on the charts.

miss A are set to drop their new mini-album Touch at midnight (February 20th, KST), while BIGBANG will release a new song “Blue” two days later on the 22nd, before their new mini-album Alive drops in full on the 29th.

Just like with 2NE1′s last album, YG Entertainment have adopted a unique promo strategy for BIGBANG’s Alive, and will be promoting every song on the album (all six!) rather than just one main single.

I’m not exactly sure how it’s all going to work out, but I think it’s good news for miss A. Girl groups already have the edge when it comes to digital sales on the singles chart, while boy bands usually excel in album sales. With BIGBANG promoting so many different songs, their albums sales should be really strong, but they’ll be spreading themselves too thin on the singles chart, giving miss A more of an advantage as they focus all their energy on their title track “Touch”. It could give miss A the edge they need to win some music programs, especially shows like Music Bank which don’t factor in album sales as much.

Right now, I’m more excited for miss A’s new stuff than I am BIGBANG. The BIGBANG concept photos haven’t wowed me (medical supplies? Dried up crusty white ish on GD’s face? No ma’am), and I’m a bit confused about their promotional strategy. I hope it’s like the GD&TOP album, which was promoted more like an American album with successive singles and music videos, rather than just a bunch of songs all being promoted at once.

As for miss A, their entire hype campaign has been absolutely flawless to this point, and judging by the amazingness of “Good-bye Baby”, I’m expecting big things.

Meanwhile, BIGBANG will be going global this year with their Alive world tour… directed by Laurieann Gibson! Let’s pray she doesn’t pull a Nicki Minaj/Lady GaGa on BB, or I’m out.

Excited for both tbh!  The defining Suzy and to bottom for T.O.P.  That deep voice of his does things to me.

I like both miss A and Big Bang’s concept photos.

As I’ve already stated on FB, miss A’s teasers have completely dazzled me with their unique sound and dark concept. At the same time I also like Big Bang’s photos, (well mostly T.O.P., Taeyang and Daesung’s). It seems they have more of a concept going on this time around versus their “generic-boyband-with-random-effects-in-the-background” concept pictures from the Tonight promotions. I’m digging the frigid, cold, “almost-dead” looking concept photos. They intrigue me.

But the hair…. well, I think they got 3/5 members’ hair right.

My predictions for the charts: miss A might win an award or two first. Then Big Bang will sweep in and take their many awards. Then maybe towards the end miss A will take one or two more. (I’m just disappointed that groups like 4minute who were supposed to make their comeback in Jan/Feb seemed to have been delayed because of BB’s comeback. -_-)

BigBang all the way. Although I like Miss A too and I’m really excited for their video and album.

By the way, what you called “crusty white ish” is actually (at least for the sake of the photo…) ICE. He’s supposed to look frozen.

Here for both! I don’t choose sides in K-Pop. It’s a losing battle.

Proph, THANK YOU for posting Min’s teaser! I still hadn’t seen it. Flawless, flawless Min…even though I’m Team Jia always.

I’m only looking forward to Miss A, however I’m not that obsessed with them to care about if they’re winning anything. Never cared for Big bang and never will. So I’m pretty neutral because I don’t listen to BB and I’m a casual fan of Miss A.

G Dragon is blonde again?! I now fancy him again lmao Sorry T.O.P you’re my No2 now.

Edit: Oh shit! That blonde guy isn’t even G Dragon lmao G Dragon’s looking a bit crusty (not because of the ice) He’s giving me Grima Wormtongue from TOTR vibes lmao
Who is that blonde guy then?! He’s my No1 now.

  • Boubam

  • prisdary mariano

    Lets pray. hahahaha.
Like you i wait for Miss A, i know that BB will do it great, awesome, etc, in my opinion i dont expect to much from them because i know that when a group is great everything is will be great.
But im waiting for Shinwan from long time and many fans too.
i dont know why people think that kpop is a competition well maybe because those tv shows that give an award for the best sell, for me those awards means nothing.

It’s true that girlgroups excel digitally and boygroups physically, but Big Bang is (one of ) the exception(s). miss A couldn’t stop Suju last summer even when they suck at digital. Big Bang has both digital and physical sales to their advantage, so I agree with the commenter who said it’s not really a competition… but miss A still can grab one or two awards… I mean, I hope so.

  • Andi

Big Bang are K-Pop royalty and have one of the largest international fanbases, so I don’t think it’s really far to put miss A and Big Bang against each other. I do think both groups will do very well though, especially since they don’t have much in the way of competition at the moment.

    Big Bang looks awful.
Miss A’s new album is out. I love the MV and title track.

    MISS A TOUCH

  • Random J

Hmmm… I’m not sure. JYP picked “Touch” as their single purely because he produced it, when that n***a knows that he should have gone with “Lips” or “No mercy” because they are much better songs and make for killer singles to perform live. “Touch” is as boring as fuck. The song doesn’t go any where. They defo should’ve gone with “Lips”. Worldwide fans would have been on that because as generic as the song is, it gets poppin’ and it’s current.

I’m not one for this ‘promote every single’ dealio because I think it saturates an album too quickly. Just pick a couple of the strongest songs and nail the live performances of them.
