miss A prepares for battle with BIGBANG

There’s gonna be some major K-Pop carnage this week when the biggest new girl group of the past two years miss A go up against K-Pop superstars BIGBANG on the charts.
miss A are set to drop their new mini-album Touch at midnight (February 20th, KST), while BIGBANG will release a new song “Blue” two days later on the 22nd, before their new mini-album Alive drops in full on the 29th.
Just like with 2NE1′s last album, YG Entertainment have adopted a unique promo strategy for BIGBANG’s Alive, and will be promoting every song on the album (all six!) rather than just one main single.
I’m not exactly sure how it’s all going to work out, but I think it’s good news for miss A. Girl groups already have the edge when it comes to digital sales on the singles chart, while boy bands usually excel in album sales. With BIGBANG promoting so many different songs, their albums sales should be really strong, but they’ll be spreading themselves too thin on the singles chart, giving miss A more of an advantage as they focus all their energy on their title track “Touch”. It could give miss A the edge they need to win some music programs, especially shows like Music Bank which don’t factor in album sales as much.
Right now, I’m more excited for miss A’s new stuff than I am BIGBANG. The BIGBANG concept photos haven’t wowed me (medical supplies? Dried up crusty white ish on GD’s face? No ma’am), and I’m a bit confused about their promotional strategy. I hope it’s like the GD&TOP album, which was promoted more like an American album with successive singles and music videos, rather than just a bunch of songs all being promoted at once.
As for miss A, their entire hype campaign has been absolutely flawless to this point, and judging by the amazingness of “Good-bye Baby”, I’m expecting big things.
Meanwhile, BIGBANG will be going global this year with their Alive world tour… directed by Laurieann Gibson! Let’s pray she doesn’t pull a Nicki Minaj/Lady GaGa on BB, or I’m out.
