Hipster electro-rockers MGMT are set to return with their sophomore album Congratulations, due 2010.

The album will reportedly take a much darker turn than 2007′s critically acclaimed Oracular Spectacular, focusing heavily on the bands whirlwind rise to fame.

“The song ‘Congratulations’ itself is pretty dark,” member VanWyngarden says of the record. “It’s us trying to deal with all the craziness that’s been going on since our last album took off. Sometimes it just doesn’t feel natural.”

MGMT are currently putting the “finishing touches” to the album, which has been recorded entirely in Malibu and is due for release “early next year”.

Until then you can catch them featuring on Kid Cudi’s latest single “The Pursuit of Happiness”.

MGMT are huge in Australia and I really liked their first album so I’ll definitely check this out. They really fit in well on Cudi’s album, so it’d be cool if he could return the favour and do a feature for them. I always like when people say that they’re going for a darker sound, so I hope that they put their money where their mouth is and making something really moody and depressing.
