Mariah Carey tries to save “Triumphant” with the ‘Vintage Throwback Remix’

Mariah Carey is one shady bitch!

After moaning about her desire to bring back music to the days when R&B didn’t need to crossover and wanting to avoid dance trends on her new album, Mimi has just gone and dropped a re-sung and remixed dance version of her atrocious new single “Triumphant (Get Em)”.

It goes under the name of the “Vintage Throwback Remix”, but it’s virtually a completely different song than the outdated hip-hop slush she premiered yesterday. This is basically Mariah’s way of diving headfirst into the dance genre, while still pretending that she’s a gritty urban diva who’s totally above joining the Usher’s and Nicki Minaj’s of the industry.

With that said, the remixed version of “Triumphant” ain’t bad. It harms back to the classic Mariah remixes of the ’90s, but it’s still current enough to sound fresher than a dusty old David Morales mix from 1994. And the best part? Mariah actually sounds like the lead artist and not a featured hook singer!

To sum it up, the “Vintage Throwback Remix” is hot tamale for a remix, but still disappointing as lead single material.

Couldn’t Mariah have just recorded a pop song from scratch like a normal person? Every album she’s ever done has been filled to to the brim with pop-leaning gems, yet she chooses now of all times to reinvent herself as hip-hop’s first lady.

Get it together, Mimi. Don’t make us send you back to the looney bin.

I don’t think this is for the album. Just a remix for the single and to cater to different audiences. It’s way better than the original that’s for sure. Her 90s dance remixes are evident here! I love it

I mean, truth be told, Mariah only has a decent first single once in a blue moon, so I’m not too bothered by any of this.

  • Blah

i don’t care if she’s a sold out bitch or not, this is much better

  • Diogo Bliss

    meh boring

Jacques, you shady blogger! :-P How is this any different from what she has consistently done since “Someday” in 1991? This is a dance version for the clubs, to be included in the maxi single. She’s not trying to make up for the atrocious main version of the song. It’s a dance remix like the zillion others that she has released for her songs throughout more than 20 years in the game, either first singles or not.

I’ll give her props for doing the kind of music that she wants and feels passionate about, but not for coming up with something subpar (and dated) as “Triumphant”. I’m sure if she had released a generic pop single she would be getting even more criticism than she is right now, with people accusing her of trying to be Rihanna or being as desperate for relevancy as Madonna with MDNA. I’m at least glad that, if she trashes her “legacy” with subpar music, it’s on her terms (hip/hop R&B) and not doing what absolutely everybody else is doing for radio play.

Other than that, I will just say that her vocals in this remix are surprisingly strong and should wear a warning against slayage.

This is LIFE! This a powerHIT! This is the queen and we bow! What a voice what an anthem. This is gonna burn gay clubs all around

    LAMB4EVER!

  • theprophetblog

This is completely different. It’s been serviced to RADIO and was premiered the same day as the normal single lol. She never does that. She’s trying to do the dual thing for different formats like Chris Brown does.

  • AOI

I would not call this a “completely different” situation. As far as I know most (if not all) of her dance remixes are served to radio stations (in the appropriate format of course). There might even be precedents of her servicing them on the actual day of release of the main version, without it meaning that it’s an attempt to “save” the song. Do you know if this is the first time that this simultaneous release happens? I’m not being shady, I’m honestly asking because I don’t know, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this had happened before. And didn’t Chris Brown serve two simultaneous singles, just like Beyoncé did a while ago? Anyway… the bottom line is that the main version of Triumphant is very disappointing, this dance version is much better and might help the profile of the song like in the case of Obsessed (it was #1 in the dance charts), and I guess I’m just against the headline of this post because I don’t think this is radically different from what she/her team usually do. Love you, love your blog x

There better be a video for this! This deserves to be the official version! and there’s a group of background singers too!

  • mimifan

i’m loving both! so amazing! gems! lol!

  • Drb

Shit compared to her epic dance mixes aka every lead single from Dreamlover to Loverboy

  • jeremy

That is def old remix Mariah..resung, rewrote, and soaring.

  • http://twitter.com/britneysunicorn nicky

Jsyk she was on twitter before she even released Triumphant talking about how she was releasing re-sung remixes.

  • http://twitter.com/britneysunicorn nicky

I don’t really like this either though. It sounds just as cheap, but in a different genre.

  • JayJBK

You are clueless, aren’t you? She’s the original multiformat artist that released different versions of her singles for pop and urban, going all the way back to the days of Fantasy. Plus, since this is a dance mix and yet features a whole new verse from the rap version, there probably is yet another version without dance beats. Maybe she’ll do each version for every format of radio, and what’s wrong with that?

  • JayJBK

“she chooses now of all times to reinvent herself as hip-hop’s first lady”? Hello, do you even know who Mariah Carey is or are you stuck in the 90′s when Mariah sang Without You in long dresses? She’s not a pop artist, and never will be. She’s R&B and hiphop. Get over it.

  • http://twitter.com/JairFuentes1991 Jair Fuentes

Pop? I’ve said this already, but I’ll say it again. Mariah loves hip-hop/r&b! The faster people learn to accept that, the better. Just like Perez Hilton saying she needs to “work with Bruno Mars and make a POP record.” People need to get over it. She does not care for being a pop artist. It’s not the 90′s, I wish people would love her for what she is TODAY.

The remix made the song sound SOOOO much better. although it isn’t hit material, this remixed version sounds so much better!!!

  • Chakra

The lambs are out and bothered today, honey.

  • mister polo

She’s release the Pulse Club Mix which is likely her answer to a Dave Guetta remix. I’m impressed that she’s back to proper remixing of her vocals, I feel she got a bit lazy with certain singles off of Charmbracelet, Emancipation (minus WBT), E=MC2, and Memoirs of an imperfect angel (her remix versions were pretty much just features)
Anyways, after being controlled for so long, she has nothing to prove and is creating music she loves rather than music she’s forced to do. If I had her success at some point I’d do the same thing to

    1. Someday is different because the original song was already a dance song. (Jack-swing influenced from 80s) Yeah, I know, the new Jackswing/Straight/pianoacapella remixes were serving different stations.

    2. She released two versions of the same lead single once before. Unfortunately for the fans, that was her Loverboy single. Doesn’t bode well. Although even Loverboy hiphop version is miles better than Triumphant, as trashy as it was.

    3. The real dance mix is Pulse Club mix. From the sound of it, it almost sounds like Mariah recorded the vintage version first and then cut out most of her singing and replaced with rappers to make it more ‘urban/Hiphop.’ Sad.

i never was much of a mariah carey stan. i’m always inclined to dislike her, but somehow her music is just geniusly addictive. i feel like i hate her but end being captured by her music. this love/hate relationship with the diva of them all has stressed me for a long time [lol] that’s why i’m glad to say that this new single is just plain bad annoying and i can hate mrs cannon in peace this year.
