[Listen] Jeffree Star previews two new tracks from upcoming album

Under the guidance of Akon, online icon Jeffree Star has spent the past year diligently recording his first major label album, with the plan being to finally make the move from being outrageous web celebrity to a bonafide superstar. Akon’s already had Star in the studio with the likes of Ke$ha, Dr. Luke, and Brian Kennedy, but we have yet to hear any new music until now. With his first official single coming “soon”, Jeffree’s decided to test the musical waters by uploading two new DEMO tracks to his official Youtube channel.

Take a listen to “Prom Night” and “If It Kills Me” below.

“Prom Night”

“If It Kills Me”

“Prom Night” was produced by Akon and is noticeably more upbeat and less vulgar than Star’s old stuff. My problem with Jeffree’s last album was the terrible lyricism, because sonically and melodically all the songs were top-notch, but cringeworthy lyrical cliches about violence and being beautiful just bogged everything down. Now that Jeffree’s under the Akon umbrella and singing the same overplayed club-pop as everybody else — albeit with some cussing and Jeffree-isms — he suddenly sounds a whole lot better than he ever has before. It’s just a shame that the stronger lyrics have been traded in for a less-distinctive sound, leaving Jeffree to lose his unique identity amongst Akon’s generic production.

“Prom Night” scrapes by with a pass, but the second demo, “If It Kills Me”, gets a gold star. The grittier production is more in line with Jeffree’s trademark style, giving the track the edge and Jeffree-ness that it needs to stop from getting lost in over-saturated dance-pop scene.

So basically, “Prom Night” lyrics + “If It Kills Me” production = good. Do that, Jeffree.

I’ll admit it…neither track is bad at all. As a matter of fact they’re both quite good. The only problem I have is that I don’t like Jeffree as a person, at all. It’s okay though, he’ll be dropped from Kon-Live/Cherrytree/whatever the hell record label he’s been signed to as soon as this flops. People just aren’t ready for an over-the-top, ridiculous caricature of a gay man to be a pop star yet. Adam Lambert barely did what I would consider good with his major label debut; he’s also much more talented than Jeffree and has a much tamer image as well. So I’m not really sure what Akon thinks is going to happen when he unleashes Jeffree on the music buying public…they’re barely ready to accept a gay man as a pop star, much less a flamboyant and offensive one.

Akon already has one tranny signed, does he really think the world needs another 1?

In what world, would he sell records and be a superstar?  I honestly don’t even see the LBGT community supporting him.  Next –>

are we back in 2010? I thought autotune crap (like Black Eyed Peas and Kesha) was over already. This sounds totally generic, this guy is never going to be a huge star.

Love the production on “If It Kills Me”.. hate his voice. Why do all the good productions go to sub-par vocalists? The only thing that brings the song to a decent level is the auto-tune on his voice as he talks “woo”.

I Dont like telling anyone that they dont have a future at something but common jeffree will never have succes in music even less be the next gaga, the reason i dont like his songs is his voice.

I actually highly dislike “Prom Night” just for the fact  that it’s so cliche and mainstream. Albeit the fact he is signed by Akon now, he is going to get radio play regardless, so I don’t see the point of following the mainstream influence. I’d much rather him stick to the style of “If It Kills Me” due to the fact he has more of an identity and originality. Plus, “Prom Night” just sounds like Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3x” infused w/ a Ke$ha song, not to mention the REALLY corny breakdown and i hope it isn’t on the new album. I LOVE the second song though….

He got a bad actitude so what? Gaga, Kanye, X-tina and others have it too, he can’t sing, so what? Ke$ha, Selena Gomez, Most of the cast of Glee and others can’t sing, his only problem in his way is that he’s image, no other than that he can be top ten he go the catchy sound, even he can’t sing or have bad actitude people still will like the song, I don’t like the songs too much they are just other euro-electro-house-technoshit mainstream top 10 going on and I like more his songs with rock-pop-electro-punk-emo edge like “Prisioner”, “Get Away With Murder”, “Love With Fuck You Rhytms” and “I’m In Love With A Killer”, “Prom Night” is kind of cool, “If It Kills Me” doesn’t sound bad but looks like needs a lot of job, maybe cause both are demos I don’t find them that good, but anyway I just like more the Breathe Carolina kind of copycat sound but let’s see, something that I do like is the image he use on the photo of the video of “Prom Night” is cool cause he only got two looks 1 when he put a lot of make up and look like angry and dead all the time and 2 when he goes more “natural” and look like he’s surprise and crazy all the time, maybe is like the “zillion” of surgery he have in his face but in that pic looks cool is different from the 2 looks I say he have like kind of Marilyn Manson “Mechanical Animals” era with all the glam-rock going on.
