Kate Bush releases new single “Deeper Understanding”.

Kate Bush has just premiered her new single “Deeper Understanding”. The song is the lead from her upcoming retrospective remix album Director’s Cut, which will feature reimaginings of songs from her 1989 and 1993 albums The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.

“Deeper Understanding”, originally from The Sensual World, tells the story of some lonely depressive trying turning to their computer for comfort.

“As the people here grow colder / I turn to my computer / And spend my evenings with it / Like a friend.”

With the rise of the internet, “Deeper Understanding” couldn’t possibly be any more appropriate today, so it’s kind of amazing that Kate had the foresight to pen such a song back in the 80s. For the rework of “Deeper Understanding”, she’s added in some computerized effects and autotune to give the sound a more artificial sound, as well as extending the length by almost two minutes. The result is something eerily futuristic, but also organic and a little celestial — the colliding of two completely different worlds.

It provides a very different take on the original, which now upon listening, sounds like a creepy prelude to a depressing future.

Check out “Deeper Understanding” below.

^^I couldn’t agree more! She has written one of the best songs ever. “This Women’s Work” remains a timeless classic.

I was JUST about to send a tweet to you Proph to give you the heads up that this premiered, but you beat me to it!

The original ‘Deeper Understanding’ is one of my all-time favourite songs, so naturally it was going to be impossible to beat it for me, but I love this new version too! I LOVE the computerized chorus – such a great idea, and you’re definitely right about the mixing of future and organic sounds – the autotune chorus against the harmonica at the end is so different!

See, THIS is what a true music legend is, people!! Kate Bush is one of THE all-time greatest there is!

Take note Lady Gaga etc and all the other Kate Bush wannabes!!!

    She is LEGEND!!!!!!

    That is all…

She is a legend, yes, and then some, but this new version is very bad. What is most disappointing of all is how nasal her voice sounds, which I hope is just because it was rushed rather than actually being shot dead like Marian and Whitney.

OK… I’m not gonna lie and say i love it yet, there are aspects that i love and some that i don’t (atm) but the same happened when i heard “Aerial” and now that’s one of my faourite albums ever and definately in my top 3 Kate albums (with “The Dreaming” & “Hounds of love”) so i’m sure after a couple more plays i’ll be loving it lol, i’m excited to hear what she’s going to do with the other tracks too now the track listing is released especially “This womans work”.

I’m treating this album more as a lil treat, the main thing is the new studio album she is working on.

@Gordon, i don’t think her voice is shot at all, on “Aerial” it’s gorgeous and that was only 5 years ago and even more recently on “Lyra”.
