Jolin Tsai returns returns with “The Great Artist”

I don’t often post about C-Pop, but I had to make an exception for Jolin Tsai‘s killer new single “The Great Artist”.
The Taiwanese Britney (or Kylie, if you want to factor in her surgeries) hooked up with Dsign Music for the new tune. Dsign is a production house based in Norway that have produced hits for Girls’ Generation (“Genie”), Namie Amuro (“Fast Car”), TVXQ (“I Think U Know”), and BoA (“Hurricane Venus”), so their track record for churning out fabulous oriental pop is pretty strong.
With it’s dance-rock vibe, “The Great Artist” is definitely closer to J-Pop/C-Pop than it is to K-Pop. It’s not as spectacular as I was expecting from a team that have produced the kind of bulletproof pop tunes that I mentioned above, or from Jolin, who snatched wigs a few years ago with her hit “Honey Trap”. It’s still pretty good though and grows with each listen, but the official music video is really where the action’s at.
With a couture French royal concept, “The Great Artist” looks like a futuristic sci-fi version of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. Everything looks amazing and everybody’s insanely beautiful. Jolin looks the best that she ever has, pulling a Kylie Fever by reaching a new peak of physical hotness in her early thirties.
Jolin’s new album MUSE drops this month, and if “The Great Artist” is the kind of thing we can expect from the disc, I’ll definitely be illegally downloading it on release day.
