It might be time to boycott Rihanna

Rihanna loves to play the bad girl. From openly smoking weed in public to calling a deranged Beyonce stan a cunt on Twitter, Rihanna is pop’s perennial wild child. She’s too cool for school and too crazy to care, and that’s exactly what we love about her. Hell, she even called her latest fragrance Rebelle, which is more like a moniker for herself rather than a bottle of perfume.

At this point, Rihanna could virtually do anything and get away with it. But reuniting with Chris Brown to collaborate on “Birthday Cake”, and now possibly a “Turn Up The Music” remix? That’s not cool.

Before rumors of “Birthday Cake” began to surface online, Chris Brown was already making headlines for his performance at the Grammy Awards. There was a huge uproar over whether he should be allowed to perform at the show only three years after pulling an Ike Turner and beating the shit out of our beloved RiRi. Country superstar Miranda Lambert was one of the high-profile celebs to lash out at Breezy after his performance, tweeting “He beat on a girl … Not cool that we act like that didn’t happen.”.

Naturally, Chris responded with one of his usual ghetto Twitter rants, cursing up a storm about his haters and boasting about his Grammy win, which only went to further fuel what has now become a growing feud. Lambert has since retaliated by dedicating her hit single “Gunpowder and Lead” –which is about a woman who shoots her abusive boyfriend with a shotgun– to Brown during a recent concert, while waving around a sign that says “Take Notes Chris Brown“.

Personally, I was more upset about the fact that dance diva Breezy won a Grammy for Best R&B Album and performed his horrible new single “Turn Up The Music” than I was about his history with Rihanna. I’m a believer in change and forgiveness, and as somebody who suffered some serious anger problems myself when I was growing up, I know what it’s like to have an uncontrollable rage inside you, and I also know what it’s like to grow-up and become someone different. Brown was only 19 when he assaulted Rihanna, and somebody shouldn’t have to pay for a terrible mistake they made as a teenager for the rest of their life.

The problem with Chris, though, is that he doesn’t seem to have changed at all. If anything, he just gets worse as time goes by. From the GMA temper tantrum to his childish Twitter outbursts and constant homophobic behavior, Chris appears to be nothing more than a belligerent, rude, and very angry young man with a serious chip on his shoulder.

But that doesn’t seem to bother Rihanna.

Rather than directly address the controversial rumors of the “Birthday Cake” collabo, Rihanna’s spent the past day sending out a series of cryptic and ill-mannered tweets that only go to further strengthen the whispers, rather than dispel them. “They can say whatever, Ima do whatever… No pain is forever <—–YUP! YOU KNOW THIS,” she tweeted ten hours ago, followed by “I feel bad for that poor bandwagon… Trying its hardest to fit everyone.

Rihanna’s reckless attitude is a far cry from the Rihanna of three years ago, who choked back tears as she sat in front of Diane Sawyer and recalled her initial return to Brown after the brutal assault, promising to never do it again for fear of sending out the wrong message to young woman.

When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part,” she expressed.

I couldn’t be held responsible for telling them ‘”Go back”,” she continued. “Even if Chris never hit me again, who’s to say that their boyfriend won’t? Who’s to say that they won’t kill these girls? These are young girls. I just didn’t realize what an impact I had on these young girls’ lives until that happened.

This is exactly why Rihanna can never collaborate with Chris Brown again, at least not right now. Not merely three years later when the man who assaulted her is still acting like a loose cannon in the public eye.

It’s not just young girls who are in danger. Domestic violence can happen to anybody, male or female, gay or straight, of any age. How can Rihanna, a woman who has not only experienced domestic violence first hand, but also came from a broken home and witnessed her own father break her mother’s nose, publicly send out the message that it’s okay for a victim to return to their abuser?

Whether she likes it or not, Rihanna is a role model. She’s the queen of cool, Esquire’s Sexiest Woman in the World, the undisputed ruler of the Hot 100. We look to Rihanna for the next fashion trends, for music, for entertainment. She is undeniably one of the most influential forces in pop culture of the past decade. To record new music with Chris Brown is like shouting out to the world that domestic violence is okay. It doesn’t matter how much he may or may not have changed behind closed doors, because this is so much bigger than that. The simple act of Rihanna recording another song with Chris Brown is enough to make one girl out there think that maybe she should risk her life and her safety by giving her abuser another chance, and that is something that Rihanna should be trying to prevent, rather than promote.

I understand that for Rihanna, this is the ultimate act of taboo — the most shocking and rebellious thing she could possibly do, and for a badass such as herself, the entire act must be strangely thrilling for the girl who has it all, but the line needs to be drawn somewhere, and this is it.

And that’s why we need to boycott Rihanna.

If this “Birthday Cake” song is released with Rihanna’s support, then it’s time to say goodbye to our favorite flame-haired vixen. The iTunes downloads need to stop, the Last.fm scrobbling needs to cease, and you better hit ‘unfollow’ and ‘unlike’ on RiRi’s social networking pages.

A celebrity is only as powerful as we, the public, make them. If we remain Rihanna supporters after she collaborates with Chris Brown again, then we’re endorsing domestic violence, and that is not okay.

And Rihanna needs to know it.

i actually support her. i agree with you on some points, but i wont boycott this.

  • Rehab

I agree with you, very self aware good post. Props *Good Girl Gone Bad Comes on her itunes* I just have the most horrible feeling about Rihanna right now….

  • http://twitter.com/SuzySooyoung Suzy Sooyoung

I agree 100% with what you said. After all that happened back there, what she said, its like playing with her fans that stood by her side as she was the face of domestic violente. And now THIS? Like it was nothing. Like you said, nowadays its bigger than her, and what she does has consequences that she doesnt fully realize maybe. I hope this doesnt backlash against her but I surely wont be playing that remix in case its true.
And chris… you’re still a fucking douche. GURL BYE.

  • http://twitter.com/joeysauer Joey Sauer

Hear hear to this post. Her (or her managements? Which I doubt in this scenario) decision to do this single is appaling.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. Open mouth insert foot Rihanna.

  • Mega

That first interview with Diane Sawyer was Def Jam talking, not her. She and Chris never wanted to break up, at least not them and I actually think the record label and handlers splitting them up was a bad move — the relationship never had the chance to end naturally so that’s why she’s rebelling. I would bet on them just being friends, and not a romantic reunion. But yeah, she seriously needs to take a step back.

As for Chris, yeah he’s been disappointing me with his behavior. You do bring up a great point that he shouldn’t be condemned forever since he was 19 when he beat Rihanna and has his whole life to change. And now that I think about, his angry outburst may be fueled BY the everyone constantly bringing up. Criminals often reoffend because they think they cannot change or please anyone.

  • http://twitter.com/souzaYan Yan Souza

    Agree 100%

  • http://twitter.com/charliekelso Charlie Kelso

I’ve read somewhere that she is the victim, and if she was our friend we would still support her. Well, we wouldn’t give money for a trashy dumb girl to stay in the same relationship instead of moving on. Friends or fans can give shoulder and advice, not invest in the madness. I still hope it’s not true, but it’s a very fucked up rumor that they are just reinforcing with these teases anyway, and that’s enough.

  • R.L.

    Agreed, good article.

You’re right that anyone can be abused. But no one ever talks about men being abused though, or seems to care about domestic violence in gay relationships. People seem to laugh it off.

  • http://twitter.com/HyunAKnowles HyunA Knowles

Totally agree. Many people (mostly teenage who’s still unstable) will think that violence is okay if she really does it. It seems like she doesn’t know how influential she is.

I am not fan of rihanna by any means .. I think her music is mindless trash and she doesn’t have one decernible talent to me so I tend too avoid when I see whatever color wig it is this week and her name on a blog post but reading this stuff on blogs and twitter downright pisses me off! I hav a younger sister who happens to be a rihanna STAN and happens to be a survivor of severe domestic abuse..She has come so far and when she called me infuriated at the prospect of this I knew it was serious! She is deff willing to boycott rihanna if this happens and I dnt blame her (I can’t boycott since I don’t buy her shit anyway). But I LOVE that u posted those two quotes she said in that interview cuz that’s xactly what she’s doing the opposite of. Without even trying to shes planting seeds in these girls minds that in some way this is okay. Rihanna has never been very responsible and I understand that’s her “image” (and I really hope ppl realize its just that .. An image) but come on rihanna as proph said is there no line?? I REALLY hope this does not happen and her label see all this uproar! I could care less on the affect it will have on her career but more so the affect on fragile lil idiolizing girls …. SMDH ..

  • ScoHay

Rihanna is starting her downhill trend this year.

  • Que

whether it happens or the not the way rihanna has been slyly playing with the idea on twitter is downright disgusting! In my eyes she’s already taken it waay too far #byerihanna

  • LP4E

All I’m gonna say is Rihanna is a grown woman and and knows what she’s doing and knows the consequences she’ll face from her decisions, and honestly the media and entertainment world should be the last place someone who is in a abusive relationship should go for help. Yeah what Chris did was wrong and no living thing should ever go through that and his actions haven’t helped his situation at all and Rihanna knows this and if the Birthday Cake and Turn Up the Music remixes rumors are true then once again Rihanna is a grown woman and knows what she’s getting into. Rihanna is an awesome entertainer and has some of the most amazing songs and videos out thereand if I like the music then ill buy it but I know as a person with a right mind knows what’s good and bad for me. As for other fans they’re adding fuel to the flame by commenting they want chris on the remix. As for any person out there who is in a abusive relationship get professional help don’t look for answers thru the lifes of famous people that have totally different lifes than us.

  • KingBeaArthur

Preach, Proph. Rebel or not, Rih should be holding her head in shame over this. Imagine if Tina worked with Ike again after escaping! Mess, mess, mess.

  • Pj

finally someone mentions the fact that she was back with him days after the incident…people make it seem like Rihanna is just forgiving him…when in reality she forgave him so quickly…

  • Shanell

I agree with this post. I think she fails to realize that no matter how much she’s screams that she is not a role model sadly she is. Just check her mentions with them young kids saying  how much she has helped them. People may say she’s grown and that it wasn’t her talking in the interviews it was def jam. No like you said she’s grown right? so she could of told them no I’m not doing any interviews. IDC how young they both were at the time if they saw how much hurt both of there parents went through they wouldn’t dare even play around with this. I’m pretty sure Chris wouldn’t want his mother back with his step father. My problem with Rihanna is the fact that it looks like she’s taking this as a joke. Let’s face it Rih your albums don’t go number one, you’re not the best singer, and not the best dancer. So people really won’t care to listen to you. So I guess she’s got to learn the hard way how people can change on you fast.

  • Djj0210

I’m gay and was in an abusive relationship for 3 years. Rihanna’s Rated R album is the album I could relate to the most, since it was the one released after the incident with material regarding the incident. At first, I won’t lie, I was saying that even though it would cause a world fuss, good for her that they could actually come together and work on something positive again. Sometimes I wish that me and that person could. But on the other hand, I’m not celebrity. And this here is gonna reach the lives of millions of people in this world that have gone thru what we’ve been thru. And I think it’s just setting a bad example. And the fact that she’s doing it with this “I don’t give a fuck” attitude is what makes it even worse. I really do hope that he realizes that eventually, even if the song is still released with Chris Brown on the track. It’s not something to joke about it even glorify and with this song being released it definitely comes off that way….and to all the fans and women across the globe that stuck up for her and had her back, radio stations, tv networks, Grammys, it’s just a huge slap in the face tbh.

  • http://twitter.com/MusicAddictJane Jane

I have to say I as a long time as a music fan with many artists. I think Riri is talented but I am starting to believe she is becoming over exposed and so is Chris Brown. I know there songs are so catchy but after awhile it gets old. I think after SOS, I got annoyed and a bit tired of hearing songs from her, I say a love hate relationship. I think there are too many Riri songs and if she gets back with a immature Chris Brown, back to rewind to listening anything but their popular songs. I don’t like abusive relationships and never understood why any woman would go through it. I know it may be hard but you have to let him go and never look back!

  • Shady1

“its just a huge slap in the face” lmao hahahaha

  • Shady1

Why are they even on Twitter like that? LOL it kills me that they are even responding negatively to people instead of being above that. I’m not here for their “Love TKO” remake lol Rihanna is not talented only marginally at sucking the right dick and producing fast food pop and Chris Brown is wayyyy overrated and looks like a monster in the face (in other words hes a buttaface…everything is hot but his face).  I really hope these collabos (her Birthday Cake and his Turn Up The Music remix with her) are not true if it is Rihanna is definately sending the wrong message regarding domestic violence…you can move on and forgive someone but you dont have to do duets with them—#justsaying

Rihanna is being truthful, she is not a role model and NOBODY should be trying to force her to be one. What Chris and her are experiencing is the fact that the mentality of THE HELP is alive and well and never left. Miranda Lambert sounded just like Hilly from THE HELP talkin’ about Chris Brown need to be put back in his place. You need to start educating children from nursery school.Teach them who they should look at as role models but not try and make Rihanna pay for your screw-ups.

  • SerferTJ

Jesus take the wheel! These two clowns need help!
And they need to lose their twitter privelages! Where the hell is there A&R team?

  • http://twitter.com/ICONI3 ICONI3

I agree that everyone should have a second chance, so the Chris brown thing doesn’t bother me. I’m just wondering why would she risk possible career Suicide? What’s the motive? If the song flops will this be worth it? I think this is just very stupid. They both are having successful careers so wth do they need each other for? So many questions.

  • KoreanDream

Even as a huge Rihanna stan, I completely agree. I’m behind Rihanna on most of her decisions, and even when I’m not, I support her. This time, however, has to be different. Chris is still immature, still unchanged, and still a  total arrogant douchebag. The classes regarding domestic violence that he took post-incident clearly taught him nothing, and nor did the public backlash he received for a good year or two. Rihanna may be a badass, and she may like to push the envelope, but collaborating with a man like that – not to mention that he beat her – places her standards so low and sets an example that I cannot support.

It’s pretty safe to say I’ll be jumping ship should Birthday Cake actually feature Chris. Rihanna may be a 23-year-old living life to the fullest right now, but I wonder if she realizes how big of an impact this collaboration could have. Her opinion on it seems to be very carefree and myopic, almost as if she doesn’t realize the things collaborating with Chris right now could do to her career and to her public image. If BC does indeed feature CB, then her career – everything she’s worked so hard for over the past 7 years – will be completely at stake. The backlash will be insane. Not to mention how important it is that she continues to be a role model and continues to demonstrate that domestic violence is a serious issue and that the abused should not “return” to their abusers – something that she’ll be completely contradicting should she reunite with Chris on this single.

I almost wish that she were dating him again as opposed to collaborating with him again. At least that would display a little more maturity. A little.

  • J2201987

I personally think we need to stop using celebrities as our moral compasses in life.

I mean, I can get a joke and giggle in from time to time at their expenses, but I don’t look to Rihanna for reasons not to rearrange a womans facial features like a Mr. Potato Head or look to Chris Brown for what type of ignorant, grammatically incorrect bullshit to say on twitter to sound profound and alluring. I look to them for good music (and I use the term “good” loosely).

We, the adults need to teach our children about morals and values and how to deal with life. Fathers (especially black ones) need to raise their children. They need to teach their sons to be respectful to women and teach their daughters to accept nothing less than respect. With a father present some of the issues we face would no longer (if not completely) be a problem. But the problem with society today is that we expect everyone (television, radio, Oprah, government…) but parents to raise their damn children, and it shouldn’t be a surprise when children constantly drop out of school. beat on, disrespect, passing STD’s to, and lie to each other. I’m a firm believer that it takes a mother AND father to raise a child, but we are in a time where (single) mothers are barely holding on and fathers are just plain absentee.

Chris and Rihanna are personas, nothing more nothing less. They are paid to entertain, on the stage, on tv or on blogs. Rihanna has this bad bitch, I-do-WETF-I-want image, and it should be left at that: an image she’s pitching to entertain you with.

The fact that people get outraged with Chris and Rihanna getting back together is ridiculous because they are two grown-ass people living their own lives and they shouldn’t be demonized for it. It’s THEIR lives to live. We can assume and speculate how they live but we’ll never know because none of us truly know them. We only know what they confirm.

So we can have our opinions and I understand you sentiments Proph but “boycotting” isn’t gonna do a damned thing (if it’s true). Just enjoy the product they deliver (and I use the term “product” loosely too) and whatever cards that are for them in their lives will be dealt accordingly.

And that trick Miranda Lambert has no room to talk about anyone because she’s a skanky adulterer and the irony of that cave bitch dedicating a song about shooting someone when AFAIK Chris never advocated challenging violence with violence in song is just astounding to me.

  • J2201987

“That first interview with Diane Sawyer was Def Jam talking, not her.”

    ^
    THIS.

  • ChristinasCOMING

I think Rihanna put her hands on him first and started beating him. You can’t put all the blame on Chris. I dont believe any of Rihannas side and weve barely heard Chris’ side. They both come from abusive backgrounds so it only makes sense that the both have some hidden anger.

Personally i think that right now theyre both hungry for publicity and attention considering that Rihannas last 2 singles flopped and chris has a new album coming out so what better way to promote your new music when all your crazy antics are dried up? Star unnecessary drama and gossip.

  • Yumm

The bday cake producers confirmed that he is not on the full length version……..I do however think she’s who’s on his remix based on his tweet about it.

I totally agree and get what you’re saying, but at the end of the day the fact is that people ARE stupid, and they do look up to celebrities and people in the public eye. Celebs can’t be held responsible for everything, but this thing with Rihanna is much more serious than just smokin’ a blunt or cussing.

  • Anonymous

They deleted that tweet though I think, which is why everyone has been in an uproar. Even Billboard posted open letters to them on their site.

  • Tommy Thompson

She has 52 million likes on Facebook and 13 million followers on twitter. Don’t be delusional and think NONE of them look up to her. Guarantee most of them do.

  • Chase_wayne12

The producers obviously deleted the tweet cus the label likes the hype and buzz that this rumor is building. She ain’t gonna have him on her remix. He ain’t gonna have her on his. They are just playing with everyone for publicity.

Dead @ you thinking Rih gives a fuck about being a role model. If she really was here for the kids, her music, attire and behavior would be much different.

Those aspects about her that you love so much does not apply to this “role model image” that you keep referring to. Why not write an essay about how her music can cause a negative impact on the youth? Or a speech about how her offensive language and attire(or lack thereof) is not suitable for minors (the bulk of her fan base)? But instead you decide to write a novel about how a musical collaboration can somehow cause a epidemic of domestic-abuse related deaths…that’s the epitome of bullshit. I get that you’re not the biggest CB fan but could you at least be rational?

In my opinion (which I’m sure isn’t a popular one), it shows growth on her part by being able to forgive and remain cordial to a remorseful person who has wronged her.

And at the end of day, it’s a collaboration, not a marriage!

    You’re so biased!

We all know you are a Chris Brown from your other comments on this site. So you trash Rihanna for her and having a negative impact, yet you support Chris Brown who is homophobic, calls people faggots, beat up a woman, throws violent tantrums etc etc???

  • CKincaid_01

    I lovvve this post Proph.

Like I honestly don’t know how to reply….

She’s an adult and she can live her life however she wants. She doesn’t tell you how to write your blog or who you can work with. If you don’t like the song then don’t buy it, that’s the only effect you can have on it

    1. I’m not Rihanna
    2. My blog doesn’t encourage domestic violence
    3. I’m NOT buying the song, that’s what the ENTIRE post is about. Did you even understand it?

*looks at previous comment* When the hell did I said Chris Brown was a role model? Clearly, he has some work to be done before he has that title but I can say he is trying.

The only reason why I trashed Rihanna just now was only to prove a point because you are stating that she needs to be a role model and not collaborate with CB.

All I’m saying is, if you really cared about her being a role model than you should have wrote a protest ages ago for her music, attire, and behavior which can ALL have a negative effect on the public. But since it’s CB (someone who you particularly don’t care for), now the whole world is going to end? Bullshit. You’re irrational and it’s ridiculous to protest a boycott of this sort.

  • Dg19779

    1. I never said you were
    2. I never said you did
    3. Your post is pointless because you aren’t going to stop the song from being successful. Do you understand that?
