Is T-ara’s member change a way for Kim Kwang Soo to bully T-ara?

In the last 12 months, T-ara have undoubtedly become one of the most successful acts in K-Pop, period. “Roly Poly” was the biggest song of 2011, the group became Triple Crown winners, “Lovey-Dovey” became their fourth consecutive single to top the GAON chart, they made chart history in Japan, and in December, an official Gallup Poll of the Korean public ranked T-ara as the second ‘Most Outstanding’ girl group of the year, trailing behind SNSD, but beating out top-tier superstars like Wonder Girls, 2NE1, and KARA. Not to mention the triple-threat of Hyomin, Eunjung, and Jiyeon, who have all become stars in their own right thanks to expansive solo activities that include popular K-dramas, movies, and variety shows.

So, what does Kim Kwang Soo, CEO of T-ara’s agency Core Contents Media, go and do? He decides to expand T-ara to a 9-member group, and then publicly threatens to replace any original members who dare to step out of line.

Check out his official statement below.

“In July, T-ara will release and promote a new album with new members. They’ll change how they are to fit the 9 of them together.”

He continued, “A lot of fans are worried and concern for the changes happening to T-ara, but our management knows very well what can happen if the changes aren’t made. T-ara will be in a situation where there will be very intense competition, and we don’t want to think that they’ll not be able to grow. T-ara went through a lot of hard practice to debut as idols. They need to continue to constantly work harder and take on new challenges.”

Kim Kwang Soo also wanted to emphasize, “T-ara’s controversies including greeting problems, stage attitude problems, etc.. as T-ara’s CEO, I’m sorry to the fans. Core Contents Media’s staff and T-ara are working very hard to make sure to avoid all controversies.”

If the members are lazy, or harmful to other members including the new members, we’ll make the bold decision to remove and replace them with new members.

Now, I know what you’re all thinking. “9 members? Isn’t that SNSD’s trademark?” I feel your pain, but normally I wouldn’t be against something this drastic. After all, T-ara is a group known for their ability to constantly transform, and a shocking member shakeup feels strangely logical for K-Pop’s biggest shape shifters. But how do you add members to a group that doesn’t even utilize the ones that they already have? Qri got two spoken lines in “Cry Cry”, and let’s all be honest here: nobody even cared about Hwayoung until she cut her hair short and finally got some solo shine in “We Were In Love” and “Lovey-Dovey”. And then there’s poor Boram, who showed some promise in her pre-debut days, but has since been demoted to singing literally half a sentence in T-ara’s most recent hit “Lovey-Dovey”.

Kim Kwang Soo has tried to soften the blow of the member change by revealing that the additional members will be “good in singing” and will help take the burden off Soyeon as the group’s main vocalist, but in reality, T-ara is not Davichi or Brown Eyed Girls — we don’t come to T-ara for powerhouse vocals. We come to T-ara for their catchy K-Pop and exciting concept changes, and the fact that they’re not perfect has always been a big part of the group’s appeal. Plus, Soyeon is essentially the distinctive ‘voice’ of T-ara now, while Hyomin and Eunjung are both very good singers (and rappers — remember “Time To Love?”), so messing with such a strong formula can only be counteractive to the group’s working dynamic.

And then there’s the terrible track record that all non-SNSD 9-membered groups have experienced. 9 Muses faced criticism upon their debut for ‘copying’ SNSD, while having 9-members in the constantly-changing lineup of After School sure as hell didn’t help them during the “Shampoo” promotions.

T-ara currently hold the advantage of being the only 7-member troupe in the top-tier of Korean girl groups, but if they add two more, they’ll be closer to becoming the new After School rather than the new SNSD, and Kim Kwang Soo can’t possibly think that’s a good idea.

So that leaves the question: Why does Kim Kwang Soo want to mess so drastically with the successful formula of one of Korea’s most popular acts, even going as far as to threaten to replace existing members of the group? It’s simple. Kim Kwang Soo wants to punish the group and bully them into obedience.

During their rise to the top, T-are not only gained popularity, but also a reputation as one of the most overworked groups in K-Pop — and a lot of that reputation has stemmed from the member’s own words. In January, when asked during an interview whether she had any complaints about the CEO of her agency, Soyeon sternly claimed that T-ara hadn’t received one vacation since debuting in 2009, and then went on to state that the group hadn’t even had one day off in 12 months. In that same month, an ill Boram tweeted about feeling “depressed” and like she would “explode from the inside”, while Hyomin wrote that the group were “overwhelmed” and “exhausted” in a public letter to her fans.

T-ara’s schedules have taken a huge physical toll on the group in recent months. The talented Eunjung sprained her ankle in early January and was still made to participate in T-ara’s shuffle-dancing “Lovey-Dovey” performances with the aid of painkillers and pressure bandages, before eventually rupturing her knee later in the same month, leaving her unable to perform or even walk without the aid of crutches (her recommended six-week recovery period was later cut short due to heavy schedules). Jiyeon suffered some trouble too, collapsing directly after a “Cry Cry” performance on Inkigayo, which led to her being hospitalized briefly for fatigue. A few weeks later while promoting Dream High 2, she expressed her jealousy over minor laws portrayed in the series, stating, “In the drama, there are special laws protecting minors in the entertainment industry, and I wish those laws existed in reality.”

The following month she was interviewed on MBC and claimed that T-ara once had 12 schedules to complete in one day, and then said that she hadn’t seen her family in months.

Exhaustion, IV drips, and being severely overworked is a well-known part of the K-Pop industry, but c’mon! Shuffle dancing on a sprained ankle? 12 schedules in one day? An entire year without one break? T-ara is the most overworked girl group in K-Pop, and you know that things must be really bad when these obedient and well-trained little idols are publicly complaining about it whenever they’re given the chance.

Rather than listen to the concerns and complaints of the group, Kim Kwang Soo’s response to their cries is to try and make them work even harder by fostering fierce competition amongst the members, with the added threat of firing members if they don’t comply. This way, they’ll be scared that if they speak up they’ll end up be jobless. It’s deranged, tyrannical, and harmful to T-ara both emotionally and physically. The group should be positively encouraged to work together towards a shared goal, not pitted against each other like an idol edition of Battle Royale.

[T-ara members struggle to stay awake during Japanese "Roly Poly" promo spot]

Kim Kwang Soo’s made his feelings on disruptive idols known in the past, publicly declaring that the members of KARA who briefly left the group during their infamous contract dispute should be blacklisted from the entertainment industry, and that any companies supporting them should be boycotted.

This is a man who doesn’t like to be defied. He’s completely copped out though, trying to attribute the member shakeup to controversies surrounding T-ara’s “attitude problems”. T-ara’s last scandal regarding this kind of behaviour was over 6 months ago when the girls apparently caused offence by looking disinterested during a performance, but their slate has been clean since then. Plus, who can really blame them for slipping up sometimes when their schedule is so packed that they only average between thirty minutes and two hours of sleep per night, according to Soyeon?

If Kim Kwang Soo isn’t careful, he’s gonna have T-ara pull a KARA on his ass and take some legal action of their own. You can only get away with treating somebody terribly for so long until they snap, and if that happens, CCM’s star act will be gone and nobody is going to get enjoy the awesomeness of T-ara any longer.

All CCM had to do was leave them as they are. Have that comeback in July and the Japanese album in June… no new members,no changes. We will be getting 1 full album, 1 full album repackage, digital single, mini-album, and repackaged mini-album before the year ends at this rate. Sure, it means the music keeps coming but if it means the girls are suffering then they don’t need it. CCM needs to realise that having them everywhere isn’t always the best. Look at Rihanna.. working nonstop for many years, and now her singles are doing badly and people are constantly saying how sick of her they are. T-ara need a nice long rest, then have a great comeback late in the year.

Great write up, by the way!

    AMEN!!. period!

MTE. KKS is preventing any form of disobedience. He made himself clear during KARA’s lawsuit, he will not tolerate any step out of line. The previous two T-ara members have been blacklisted.

However besides Jiyeon and Eunjung, the rest are completely replaceable. T-ara name is bigger than them individually and the members together (if that makes any sense).

I also don’t think T-ara would survive an attempt lawsuit, like KARA did. I would think the group would completely dissolve and depending on how it turns out (if they win the lawsuit) the more popular members will stick with acting.

    *slow claps for this article*

KKS is a dick! I wouldn’t be opposed to a member layoff or addition if he didn’t  backhand them in the same breath. My heart goes out to the members who, even on the brink of death, are able to deliver better than some of their superiors who tend to rest on their laurels or fan base vs. evolving.

T-ara have done more in the last year concept wise than some groups do in three!

Hwayoung, Eunjung, Hyomin, Jiyeon <333 forever

This is ridiculous. Kim Kwang Soo sounds more like a Kim Jong Ill. I’m no fan of T-ARA, but I genuinely feel bad for these girls. This is one of the reasons why I can’t stand K-pop. Most of the musical acts in K-pop can hardly be called artists; they’re products manufactured by their record labels. Is being famous or living the Idol life worth it when your life basically is JUST being an Idol? I recently read that YG’s Ceo forbade 2ne1′s members from dating; Bom and Dara are almost 30, they’re GROWN women who’s personal lives should not be dictated by their careers. Another story that shocked me was Japanese singer Jin Akinishi being punished for marrying Meisa Kuroki w/o informing his record label; They canceled his concert and forced him to pay the cancellation fees. Many *deluded* stans argue that this is the price these artists pay for defying social customs or living the idol life, but just because a law or social custom is in place that doesn’t make it right? Where would our world be if it weren’t for people throughout history practicing civil disobedience. ( Obviously, the issue with unfair treatment of Asian music artists isn’t of the same caliber as some historical issues). The only thing Idols owe us is to put out quality music/ performances that the fans enjoy. That is what they’re selling, not their soul like Kim “Jong Ill” soo would like. Most of these artists have been scouted from young ages for the sole purpose of becoming world renowned stars. Yes, Asian music acts are a lot more primped and polished than their western counterparts, but is it worth it when your life is centered solely around your music career? when your personal desires are placed on the back burner? No one deserves to have a career that defines them entirely as a person. This isn’t healthy for a multitude of reasons, but from a musical standpoint it causes the artist to lose interest in their craft. Look at Boa, Sm/avex worked her into a depressed shell of her former self, then threw her to the side like an old wig once she no longer pushed massive units. I guess some people don’t really care about a musical artist’s integrity, but I do. Part of what sets apart the artists I stan for, and those who I listen to casually is how much creative input and musical integrity the artist has. I am a fan of some K-pop acts, but the music for the most part is produced solely from the producer/ record label, and it diminishes its quality for me. The music industry in Korea needs to change. It sickens me the way some of these acts are treated; It’s inhumane and fueled by corporate greed. Okay my rant is done.

  • http://twitter.com/TheProphetBlog The Prophet

I actually like the way K-Pop industry is run to an extent. K-Pop artists are professional entertainers, and they sacrifice things to become top class in their field, just like any professional athlete or dancer would.

It’s okay for them to not have creative input because pop music is all fake any way, no matter where you’re from, so I’d rather be slayed by a beautiful K-Pop star performing their ass off for me than Nicki Minaj or Katy Perry or something who can barely sing or dance or do anything, and get a couple of co-writes on their albums coz they spitball ideas during writing sessions with 10 professional writers that the label hired to make a song that will be played on the radio.

Plus. some K-Pop artists are involved in their careers in terms of writing and producing etc, so not everyone is a Simon Cowell factory line robot. They generally get more chances to add input and do their own thing as they become more successful and pay their dues.

I just think they need more freedom and lighter working hours. This KKS thing is total bullshit. You can’t work people into the ground and threaten them into obedience. T-ara need more rest and freedom if they are to function as a healthy and successful group.

  • ureshi

People need to know what has happened with Nam Gyuri and  See Ya that Kim Kwang Soo is ruined without forgetting the scandal of the boys of Co-Ed

if you look at the situation of JYJ and SM, or when JYP lost Bi-Rain

i think all of this has leaded Kim Kwang Soo trying to control his idols by fear, as K-POP is growing all over the world

  • Mel R

No, I completely agree that K-Pop is miles better than the likes of Katy Perry, or Nicki Minaj. I’m no fan of mainstream american pop  as well. In fact, I hate it even more because the people that occupy the top 40 for the most part are talent-less tramps. I have a lot of respect for K-pop artists. They work their asses off, speak a plethora of languages, and do things that your western faves could never do. Also, I have a lot of respect for them  because their live game is on point, even when their performances are a bit shaky or rough it still shits on your western faves best (in terms of mainstream pop).  I know this is attributed to the way that the industry is run, but what I was really trying to say is that their needs to be some balance. Slave Mongers entertainment, and Masochistic Net are notorious for over working  their artists to the point of fatigue and injury, and THAT is unacceptable.
I know that a lot of K-Pop artists have creative input. For example, Big Bang’s G-dragon is their song writer and T.O.P writes his lyrics, also CL from 2ne1 has written some of her lyrics as well, BoA later into her career wrote lyrics to some of her songs and even produced on her latest flop Identity. YG’s top artists seem to be genuinely happy, and I know their asses are loaded as well, I don’t think the same can be said for the artists at some of these other record labels.

  • tjoz

Congratulations Prophet on getting it up at AKP too.

Dont forget what he also did with Co-Ed. Called them failures then ships them off to a sub label within CCM so he doesnt have to deal with them… Then he got rid of Soomi (Co-Eds main female singer)…

The Devil Incarnate wants success straight off the bat. CCM is not JYP, SM or YG where they could essentially put out a sub standard act and still do well just off the fact they come from the big 3. The smaller labels have to foster and work with their acts to get them where they need to be.

Perfect examples would be both Star Empire and DSP with Nine Muses and KARA. DSP spent years developing KARA to what they are now. That didnt happen overnight. It also took contract disputes to get further attention to the work conditions of idols. If KARA had not have done that, it would have spiraled out of control and may lead to an idol in any other company taking matters into their own hands just to get out of the contract… With Star Empire, while Nine Muses are not as popular as other girl groups you can see where the investment into the act has been put; Nine Muses are the girl group to beat when it comes to live performances. They have gone from being the joke of the idol groups to now being one of the best performance idol groups. Again it took at least a year to get Nine Muses where they are now.

Another thing Devil Incarnate can take from Star Empire/Nine Muses is the member changes. Yes everyone who into Kpop has either seen or heard of the video that is out there on how Star Empire use to treat Nine Muses. Since then Star Empire have treated them alot better. What KKS can take from Nine Muses are the member changes. Even though Jaekyung left after the car accident and Bini and Rana left after Ladies promotions they still have a working relationship with Star Empire. Its the girls they added in; Hyuna and Kyungri. Usually when new girls are added their is the boycott within the fans of the new members (T-ara with Hwayoung and Co-Ed with Eunkyou and the two new boys). Both Hyuna and Kyungri were instantly accepted by the fans and with many of them both Hyuna and Kyungri are some of the most popular members within the group. There is also Jewelry’s rotating members too. Jewelry’s not the longest running Korean girl group for nothing; it came from careful member changes.

Star Empire were extremely lucky to get it right with Hyuna and Kyungri. CCM does not have that track record when it comes to member changes.

    OMG this man is terrible.

  • Darwin

I think him saying that they might become dull in the third year is pure bullshit. These girls have been kicking their own asses for the last three years non stop. Non fuvking stop. Especially the remaining original members.
I know that Qri is not the best singer and Boram forgot where she left her talent, and that Hyomin & Soyeon are the only consecutive good vocalists but seriously. These girls have made him so muchfucking money that for him to say that.
    Like, fuck.
If you’re gonna add more members, just do it, but don’t threaten to kick out the only money makers your company has.
Instead of all of this, subunits would be better. That would be a more friendly competition IMO.

  • Darwin

One thing I’d say is that T-Ara would probably never get full / old.
They are always coming up with new things / exposing other members and all.
For example, Cry Cry was HUGE for Soyeon & Hyomin, Lovey Dovey was immense for Qri because she finally had the lime light. They are actively channeling new themes / music / etc. and kpop is diff than US Top 40. Rihanna’s 3 albums sound the same for the exception of some songs. Whereas T-Ara’s kept a diff sound every time , a diff successful theme and slay each performance.
    Ugh I’m frustrated.

  • Deabak29

    Threaten and
punishment are not the effective way to make T-ara members work harder..
Just like written by the article, Qri only given two line in Lovey
Dovey song and Boram does not shine since T-ara debut days.

This is because The CEO doesn’t giving equal chance to all members to
perform their best. Soyeon, Hyomin, Eunjung & Jiyeon, The CEO
always used this same four girls to maximize T-ara strength in vocals
    and also in acting.

Why don’t you Mr. CEO looks at the members that hasn’t given
opportunity yet to prove that they also are talented and can do a good
job. Why don’t Mr. CEO look carefully what kind of job suits T-ara
members. Maybe T-ara Qri, Hwayoung and Boram could be great MC if your
company trained them properly and their will have a chance to MC-ing at
    huge music awards.

Mr. CEO, you must know that you already dig to the max about the
talent and what Soyeon, Hyomin, Eunjung and Jiyeon have and can do and
suddenly you are thinking that this 4 girls were used for 3 years and 4
of them can’t contribute more to the growth of T-ara.

As for solution, Mr. CEO you get 2 new members into T-ara because you
know the 2 new members are talented and you will using them for several
more years. You know the cost of debuting new group are expensive and
to minimize your loss in profits for marketing & advertising for
your new group, you just taking shortcut with using T-ara.

I don’t know what are you thinking Mr. CEO,  Idols were exists
because of fans and without fans there is no such a popular idols to
reach a prestigious awards. Once SNSD Taeyeon said in her interview ” A
singer must have a listener to listen for their singing” this means what
ever kind of singer or idols needs their fans to support thier present
    and future career.

With doing this way, using 9 members as a new format, removing any
members that are lack, lazy and gives harm to any new members are not
accepted by T-ara fans. Mr. CEO, you maybe using this issue for gain
attention from media and also fans but i’m doubt that all of T-ara fans
are agree and happy with your strategic planning for T-ara future.

Till T-ara new album released, Mr. CEO you should expect that many of
T-ara fans are against you and the sales of the new album will be
decreasing because your cleverness action to your girl group idols.

    P.E.A.C.E :D

  • pg13247

Well I don’t know if Jiwon is blacklisted since she is now a part of SPICA but you never know if that group will be negatively affected once they start getting big. They have Hyori’s backing but will that be of any use?

  • pg13247

I don’t know how Star Empire did it, but those two new Nine Muses members seem to fit in so well as if they were there from day one. For some reason there’s still this friction in T-ara about Hwayoung. (Kyungri and Hyuna have proven themselves to be very competent singers but Hwayoung’s abilities are still a mystery.)

  • pg13247

This is ALL just speculation but, an AKP poster brought up an interesting theory:
Could the two new members be KKS’s spies in T-ara so he could listen to what they really say in their dorm? It could have been Hwayoung’s intended role as well.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hipployta Hipployta

Waiting for the lawsuit…Nam Gyuri walked away from CCM intact and T-ara has way more talent than her.  Eunjung and Jiyeon are the key to any lawsuit though….and since Eunjung isn’t the “official” leader anymore who knows.

That time is gone and they should enjoy the status they have now and cook those hits comfortably.

  • tjoz

Thats because Kyungri and I think Hyuna too were part of the original group of girls being trained for debut in Nine Muses. Hyuna was put in first to replace Jeakyung after the car accident they were in and Kyungri once she didnt debut in Nine Muses she went to Media Line. When Bini and Rana were not going to return to the line up Star Empire called her back in.

You cant get much better than both Hyuna and Kyungri. Best additions into a girl group in a very long time. Both crazy talented and both were accepted by the fans straight away.

CCM have not had a good track record with any member additions into their groups.

Not really a fan of them (I don’t listen to them) but this sounds like some bull SHIT, Who wants to just add some random bitches to an already successful group???      Haha I don’t have enough authority to access comments on AKP, I just submit my articles there and they get posted hahaha.

T-ara is perfect with 7. I would even rather them fire some of the less popular/talented members like Boram and Qri and add two new girls who are good singers, rather than just make the group 9 and ruin them. Of course I want Boram and Qri to stay though, but I would rather them go than have all of T-ara ruined with 2 new members, since it took until this year just for ppl to start accepting Hwayoung.

I don’t think Boram wants to do idol music anyway. I think she wants to make more adult music like her father.

I don’t think they’re going to walk away from CCM, let’s face it, the company made T-ara. Some of then can sing or act but kpop its more conceptual, like the’re playing their part in a project called T-ara.  That’s why i think maybe 9 members is good because all the wacky ideas so far had slayed me. Also because if they continue this path, 2 girls well trained would be great to fill in when members start breaking.

  • SerferTJ

That is just straight up disgusting!
I can’t believe how vindictive and corrupt the music industry can be sometimes! It shouldn’t be THAT serious!

  • theprophetblog

Poor guy. Who wants to hear Boram on the potty after getting food poisoning from some bad kimchi? I don’t envy the man…

  • Black_Plague

I disagree KARA fully lost the lawsuit – besides, we don’t exactly know the full details on what occurred.

I’ll also say that SM wasn’t able to hold itself very well against lawsuits by JYJ, Han Geng and even Shinhwa either (and frankly, SM made itself look like a bunch of dweebs as well) - and for crying out loud, SM is among the Big 3 with a much higher amount of cash available to spend on its artists compared to CCM (which also has the burden of having to maintain a broadcasting channel and that costs a HUGE amount of money).

  • Black_Plague

Come to think of it, T-ara wasn’t exactly what I’d call a ‘idol group’ upon its debut – until Bo Peep Bo Peep came out.

If CCM even bothered, they could have at least given Boram a chance to do more mature music and put it as part of T-ara’s singles and albums (plenty of other groups do this too).

  • derrrps

They never went though with the lawsuit (which in all honestly they prob would of lost) but they were able to renegotiate their contracts… I wouldn’t call that a lost. But I never claimed anything in my original post. Just that they survived the ordeal and maintained all members.

You know it makes me sad to see that Soyeon left of being SNSD because she was extremely overworked as a trainee and now she is being overworked in a girl group, (if I remember it correctly. I could be wrong though on that). I hope something drastic happens that will cause some major good changes for T-ara without anyone being kicked out. This member change is so stupid because now some members are certainly going to be pushed to the back or not even appear at all.

By the way, well done on the article and it feels good that I’m not the only one who hates this decision.

I agree T-ara is a kpop band not a group of robot slaves and 2 of the members are still under 20 just young adults …..give them family time and let them rest for a bit before he ruins everything!!!!!!
