Good Girls Gone Bad: Girl’s Day make a sizzling comeback with “Expectation,” remain perfect and godlike

Girl’s Day has pretty much been the perfect girl group ever since they smashed the charts with “Twinkle Twinkle.” They have yet to release a bad single (even “Oh My God” eventually grew on me to the point of worship), they’ve actually got their own sound, they’re both supremely hot annnnnd ridiculously cute, and their comedic, over-the-top charm gives them a lot more personality than your average idol group.
Yeah, I could pretty much go on about why I stan for Girl’s Day for hours. Maybe even days.
Now that the girls have been in the game for three years and their two youngest members, Hyeri and Yura, are legal, Girl’s Day is dropping their trademark cute concept for a full-blown “Abracadabra” style makeover for the release of their new single, “Expectation.”
“Expectation” builds off of Girl’s Day signature techno-synth sound, picking up where last year’s “Don’t Forget Me” left off and swapping the dramatic ballad elements of the song for aggressive, femme fatale ‘tude. As pointed out by Allkpop, the tropical euro beat on the verses sounds like Nicki Minaj’s “Pound the Alarm,” while the girls’ heavily-processed vocals undergo a glorious mid-sentence pitch switch that sounds like autotuned heaven for the ears.

While “Expectation” is pure Girl’s Day (thanks to the skill of the group’s longtime producer Nam Ki Sang), it also serves up some major T-ara Absolute First Album era vibes. At times, it resembles an updated version of the club beats that ruled T-ara tracks like “Tic Tic Toc” and “One & One,” and “Expectation”‘s hook even features the line “I go crazy because of you.” To nitpick further, Girl’s Day’s closing pose in their MV looks exactly like T-ara’s Absolute First Album cover…
Let’s just call Girl’s Day’s “Expectation” the long-awaited Absolute Second Album and be done with it.
As for the “Expectation” music video, it’s great, but then again, basically all of Girl’s Day’s post “Twinkle Twinkle” MVs have been great. The “Expectation” clips looks like 2009 era K-pop videos, channeling KARA’s “Lupin” and Brown Eyed Girls’ “Abracadabra” in style, concept, and choreography. Their “suspender dance” is perfect: addictive and easy to emulate, and red hot without being trashy. All the members look fucking stunning (with plastic surgery addict Jihae gone, Girl’s Day is now one of the most attractive girl groups in the game) but Yura stands out the most due to the fact that Dream Tea has finally allowed her to embrace her supreme hotness. Judging by the way Dream Tea’s been promoting her lately, it looks like they’re trying to push Yura as a Hyosung/Hyori type sex symbol, and ain’t nobody gon’ complain about that.
I’ve discussed Girl’s Day’s career trajectory about a million times before and I’m not going to go over it again, but in a nutshell, I’ve said that they needed to come out with something major to try and regain some of the buzz they had back when “Twinkle Twinkle” was big. “Expectation” could very well be the thing that Girl’s Day needs to propel them back to the top. And if it isn’t, then nothing ever will, coz this shit is off the damn chain.
