Drake’s New Single, “Started From The Bottom,” Ain’t Too Bad

Drake’s always copped some shit from hip-hop fans for being a bit of a softie. You know, coz any dude in the urban world who didn’t deal drugs from the age of six and shoot at least three people in the face is a pussy. I guess Drizzy’s sick and tired of being treated like a silver spoon bitch who used his role on Degrassi to gatecrash the rape game (or something), because on his new single, “Started From the Bottom,” he’s letting us know what a tough time he had coming up in the biz.

Drake references several harrowing moments from his troubled youth on the Mike Zombie-produced single, such as arguing with his mother and not being able to borrow his uncle’s car for more than a day at a time.

The rest of the song is just typical hip-hop bragging about how successful >>>insert rapper here<<< is now.

However, all the #no1curr lyrics aside, “Started From The Bottom,” is a still a relatively solid lead single. It’s catchy with a nice knock to it, and the melancholy piano line over the hard street beat just screams Drake in the best way possible. It’s not a big crossover record for radio or the ladies, and is more just Drizzy getting a few things off his chest before his next inevitable Hot 100 smash finds its way into our cars and iPods.

Basically, it’s the “Headlines” of 2013.

By the way, if you wanna be super gay, sing: “STARTED OUT A BOTTOM NOW I’M A TOP!” I can’t say it though coz that shit ain’t true.

THAT LAST LINE OF YOURS HAHAHA

  • gotgotgone

I agree with you saying this is a song to start the buzz like Headlines did. I loved the Take Care album but I hope his new album has more variety. He needs to play around sonically because the sound hes had for the past few years has been done to death by everyone now.

I’ve been thinking about that. He really developed his own sound with 40, and now every has jacked it and made it so unoriginal. This album will be tricky for him, but I think he’ll be fine. He could do an album with the same beats as Asap Rocky and it’d smash the charts and critics.

“…..such as arguing with his mother and not being able to borrow his uncle’s car for more than a day at a time.”… DEAD! lmao

I like Drake, maybe I have a soft spot for softies.Actually this song now plays with Nas “Bye Baby” and it’s a perfect combination for an evening like this, thank you.

Lmao this one is damn hilarious. I thought you were gonna write a serious single review for this one as Drake is one of ur fave rapper, if I take reference from your previous Drake posts. You’re right Proph, i think the lyric of this song is cheesy and generic, but the beat is another different story IMO. It’s hot, irresistible, and the chorus is catchy. I think radio will eat this up.
