Drake premieres first single from posthumous Aaliyah album

Okay, so I’m not really into this whole bringing back the dead thing for concert appearances and new records. First there was that terrible Michael Jackson album, then there was Tupac’s appearance as a hologram at Coachella, and now Drake has used the power of studio technology to create a brand new Aaliyah song called “Enough Said”, which is rumored to be from upcoming posthumous Aaliyah studio album that he’s been working on.

Does anybody care that maybe Tupac might not have wanted to perform at Coachella? And maybe that maybe Aaliyah thinks Drake is a douche and wants to work with Frank Ocean or The Weeknd instead?

Anyway, the song is here, and it’s pretty good, all things considered.

Aaliyah sounds like a beautiful ghost. Her voice, as smooth as satin, echoes and floats through a spooky haze of foggy alt-urban, predictably produced by Noah “40″ Shebib.

Unfortunately, a damper is put on Aaliyah’s return when Drake jumps on the track to diss Chris Brown about the flop sales for his Fortune album, which is a good example of just why this posthumous collaboration probably should have never happened in the first place.

Bitch, Aaliyah couldn’t five a fuck about your petty bullshit with Breezy. Wow, so y’all are both fucking Rihanna — so is half of Hollywood. Get over it.

If I die tomorrow, I will haunt you hoes if y’all start writing posthumous The Prophet Blog entries about how interested I am in the MTV VMAs and how I can’t wait for the new Beyonce album to drop.

Couldn’t agree more. Was not a good move especially after Timbaland said his piece. Although it should be noted that Aaliyah had a successful career before, with and after Missy and Timbaland worked with her. A multi platinum album before, with and after. So perhaps her legacy should be left alone. Downloading the solo version now. Drake! What were you thinking?

  • Sine

hey don’t be mad proph, there’s a solo version of the song ;) and fuck it’s a great song!!!

  • http://twitter.com/ICONI3 ICONI3

It’s good but it seems so copy&pasted together. The “yea yea yea” got annoying.

Omg I love Aaliyah’s part! I almost forgot how much I missed her voice. But Drake does not fit on this song at all! Her part is so flawless and smooth and his rap just comes across harsh and doesn’t flow with the song at all. Fail for Drake. Always a win for Aaliyah.

  • Deedee

    Drake is a creep…period.

  • yep

i loooooooooooooove the song but why do u have to talk shit about rihanna in a aaliyah/drake post…?????? get over yourself…..

  • Deedee

I hardly post, but I definitely agree. I’m a huge Aaliyah fan, loved hearing a different song from HER only.

  • sine

ho please Timbo is so 2007!! what would he do anyway? put aaliyah’s voice in a crapy background leftover from the shockvalue 1 sessions or simply aske Danja to give him an old demo of brit’s blackout under his name???? gime a break with timbaland, the guy is busy fucking with pitbull

  • Greg M

It’s one thing if Missy Elliott and Timbaland tried to do this, but Drake? Really?!……..I’m hella mad. This nigga got to drop dead for this ish

As a huge Aaliyah fan I’m still not sure how to feel about the whole situation. On one hand it’s great to hear how she would’ve sounded in 2012, especially paired with a talented beatmaker like 40. Timbaland, Aaliyah, Missy and Static had a kind of chemistry that was unbeatable and none have been able top it since her death. Having said that it’s such a pleasure to hear new Aaliyah music again since her voice was made for productions like this.

Her impact is really evident in todays music. Minimal beats, r&b vocals and a haunting track has become such an indie staple and imitated by a number of artists. I have mixed feelings at the lack of Timbaland and Missy’s inclusion though since they were such a driving force of her sound. They were so close and did so much for her but Timbaland’s beats sound so weak now and have nothing on his 90s stuff. It seems like it’s one of the times where we should just appreciate the music for what it is and celebrate her life and legacy.

  • Blah

flawless but the merit is 90% aaliyah and 10% noah 40 shebib, 0% drake.

  • tjoz

This was suppose to be out almost 10years ago everything with this project.

Drake shouldnt be on it. Aaliyah wouldnt do anything like that. Couldnt they get DMX, Ginuine or her brother to be on it instead? Even Usher would be a better fit.

Tweet should still be attached to some of the project too. Been Around The World should have been released properly instead of just vinyl

  • YAAAS HONEY!!!

I’m not here for a song with Aubrey’s period blood all over it. No ma’am.

    Is he lying though?

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

Drake is such a fuckin girl! I swear he’s like Taylor Swift in a guys body… Did he even ever MEET Aaliyah?! Who is her family wants money this bad??? It’s great hearing her voice again but this is not a celebration of her legacy it’s a tool to make Drake bigger… It’s like letting Justin Bieber make a new MJ album ffs… NO.

  • Kb

Her voice on a Shebib beat….just perfect. I love her smooth soft voice and even tho its thin….it touches me everytime i hear her. Thats what i loved about aaliyah.

/ I miss Aaliyah sooooo much!!!! You made me laugh with how you write this article though lol

  • MK

She may have been dead for like ten years, but she’s still Blackground’s priority.

  • http://twitter.com/erokawai1987 ~ ERO-KAWAI! ~

I get your point. But seriously…he came correct with the song. Not sure if Timbo would be able to get it done right nowadays. He can’t produce a decent beat to save his own life, let alone take full control of a posthumous release of Aaliyahs.

I’ll just say, Drake needs to approach Missy and Timbo to find a balance. And stop dissing Breezy. I’m not here for that. I don’t give a shit, most people don’t give a shit, and I bet my ass on it that Aaliyah sure as hell wouldn’t give a shit.

  • Rene

Haha I’m all about the posthumous Prophet Blog entries. “And he really, really loved Nicki Minaj, but didn’t want his love for her to bias the blog.” And so on hahaha

  • http://twitter.com/StopItLuke Luke

I’m not saying anybody even should make a new Aaliyah album, I’m just saying that if anybody should it should be somebody who actually knew her and had a musical relationship/connection with her like Missy or Timbaland.
Drake did not come correct with anything, Noah “40″ Shebib and Aaliyah came correct, Drake sounds like he does on any of his other songs and to bring Aaliyah (who is dead and has no say) into something dissing annother artist is cheap and tacky.
You can bet all you want that Aaliyah wouldn’t give a shit but I’m guessing she would give a shit about someone she didn’t even know using her voice.

  • Burk Kyler

For me Aaliyah’s last LP will always be Aaliyah, everything else is just compilation. Rock The Boat is my life and I will be buried to that song, so I will always have reservation on “new” from her. Sometime you need to let it go, cause her legacy will forever live on without this.

Song is ok, definitely can do without Drake, but I must say the last 20 sec where truly haunting and beautiful

  • http://twitter.com/erokawai1987 ~ ERO-KAWAI! ~

you’re right…I completely understand you. And my bad…I meant “Noah “40″ Shebib came correct. Drake obviously ruined it with the diss (disrespectful, tasteless and there’s always a place and time for such things, definitely not on this track) What I want to say is, that it’sgood new Aaliyah music is in the airwaves. God knows it’s been way to long for an unreleased song to rotate. I say, all the producers from her last album “Aaliyah” sit together and do something fresh (to bad Static already passed).

Tim and Missy were of course a big part of Aaliyah’s legacy…but let’s face it, Timbo only contributed two songs to her last album, and Missy had no writing duties on that one. What I want to say, I’m not really pissed at Drake for bringing “40″ along, because Aaliyah was moving on anyway…and I think they could have chosen someone way worse to represent her sound in 2012.

So with that, the song rocks, I want an updated 2012 album from Aaliyah, but I want it to be done correctly and respecting her legacy and integrity as an artist.
