Cheryl Cole Premieres Cheap “Ghetto Baby” Music Video

Cheryl Cole‘s Lana Del Rey leftover, “Ghetto Baby”, kills me. Even with Cheryl’s piss-weak voice, it still slays wigs, but it’s such an obvious LDR song that poor ol’ CC just sounds like she’s singing karaoke after a few too many pints at the pub. But just to be clear, I do love this song, so don’t get it twisted. Cheryl hasn’t bothered releasing it as a single since her albums on average can’t produce anything more than one hit each, but she has gone and released a random video for it, just for, y’know, “buzz” or something.
The clip was shot by fashion photographer Rankin, who has previously put together some amazing visuals for the likes of Sky Ferreira, Kelis, Azealia Banks, and Nelly Furtado. Sadly, this ain’t one of ‘em. It’s kind of all over the place without a strong concept — it doesn’t know if it wants to be a performance piece, or a glamorous, wind machine kinda thang. It also does something that I hate from American and British pop videos, where the choreography is only shown for a few seconds at a time because the artist is never talented enough to keep the really good parts of their routine going for more than a few seconds at a time.
I’m picking this apart too much, though. “Ghetto Baby” is one of Cheryl’s few flawless songs, and a thrown together video with a few good shots is better than no video at all. And I really need to stop shading Cheryl’s dancing every time she busts out her little hip-hop body rolls and two-steps. Her moves still shit on most of these American pop tarts, so I guess she deserves some credit for that. I think. Maybe …
