Here’s the weekly Last.fm post, where we all exchange our top five most listened to artists & songs of the past 7 days from our Last.fm accounts. If you don’t use Last.fm, then just let me know what your favorite songs are at the moment. No order is necessary, and feel free to link to your accounts in the comments!

Top Artists
1. Fiona Apple
2. Heidi Montag
3. Britney Spears
4. Marina and the Diamonds
5. Lolene

Top Songs
1. Fiona Apple – Slow Like Honey
2. Heidi Montag – Bad Boy
3. Kid Cudi – Erase Me
4. Heidi Montag – Superficial
5. Miley Cyrus – Robot

Queen Fiona is on top where she belongs, followed by Princess Heidi. By the way, last night I dreamed that I got all the same plastic surgery that Heidi did. I lived in this creepy magical supermarket, and then I snuck back into my old high school to show off my new face, but it was all swollen and scarred and I had these giant stitches across my mouth from all the surgery, but it looked really cool. I think it was because I got high and watched The Hills right before I went to sleep.

Fantasia performs “Bittersweet”, discusses suicide attempt and exceeds sales expectations with new album.

Posted in Uncategorized on August 24th, 2010 by The Prophet

Controversial American Idol star Fantasia stepped out today amidst drama surrounding her personal life to appear on Good Morning America, to promote her just-released third album, Back to Me.

The 26-year-old sat down with host Robin Roberts for a tearful chat about her recent suicide attempt and struggles with depression, before taking the stage for a near-flawless performance of her new single “Bittersweet”. I’m not exaggerating when I saw flawless, either — she sounds EXACTLY like the studio version.

Meanwhile, it looks like the rabid media attention that Fanny has received over her suicide and personal issues is actually going to transfer over to sales, with HitsDoubleDaily claiming that early retail reports have Back to Me “exceeding expectations”, and that it could even challenge Katy Perry for the #1 spot. Realistically, dethroning Katy will most likely be impossible since right now she’s #1 on every digital chart available, but it does mean that both Katy and Fantasia are in for some big first week numbers, regardless of who tops the chart or not.

Check out the talented Fantasia doing what she does best, below. Just for the record, I’m still mad that my jam “Hood Boy” wasn’t a huge for Fanny back in the day!

Katy Perry talks E.T. and continues to crush the charts.

Posted in News, Uncategorized on August 20th, 2010 by The Prophet

Last week, Katy Perry dropped the third and final of her Teenage Dream promotional singles on iTunes, “E.T.”. To promote the Dr. Luke/Max Martin-produced song, Katy has posted a new video of herself on YouTube talking about the intergalactic inspiration behind the single, which you can watch below.

In other news, Katy’s stranglehold on the Hot 100 got even stronger late last week when her former-chart topper “California Gurls” rebounded from 4-3, and her current smash “Teenage Dream” shot into the top five at #5. This makes Katy the 10th solo female in the Hot 100′s 52-year history to concurrently place two titles in the top five as a lead artist. Not only that, but her iTunes promo single “Circle the Drain” also debuted at #58 due to digital sales alone.

This is huge news for Katy, which means that she’ll have two singles in the top five when her Teenage Dream album arrives in stores on August 24. Katy’s first week album sales are going to be a huge testament to her power as a pop artist. Can she turn her singles success into album sales like Britney and Beyonce, or is she going to go the way of Ke$ha and Rihanna?

Matt Morris premieres “Live Forever” video.

Posted in Uncategorized on August 4th, 2010 by The Prophet

Singer-songwriter Matt Morris has received a big budget makeover from his label Tenman Records. Not only did his January debut When Everything Breaks Open receive a reissue last month (complete with fancy new cover art pictured above), but he also scored an expensive music video for his latest single “Live Forever”.

A lot of the clip is done with green screen technology, but it’s been done in a tasteful way with some beautiful effects and visuals that all tie in with the song. Just don’t get too caught up in the artistic nature of it all though, because if you pay attention you’ll notice a pair of fucking Beats by Dre headphones float right past your face.

Is nobody safe from product placement anymore?

Anyway, if that’s what they had to do to give Matt a fancy video for this amazing song, then I can let it slide. I just wonder where the hell Tenman Records make all their money from. They’re always splashing cash on Esmee Denters, and now they’ve gone and done this for Matt Morris. Justin Timberlake must be a broker than me by now.

MTV VMA nominees revealed. Yes, the VMAs still suck.

Posted in Uncategorized on August 3rd, 2010 by The Prophet

MTV may stopped playing music video’s years ago, but that minor detail doesn’t seem to have affected the MTV VMAs, one bit with the full list of nominees being announced earlier today. Leading the pack is Lady GaGa, who makes history with an insane 13 nominations – the most for any artist in a single year. Considering all that GaGa has done for pop music video’s in the past year, I can’t think of anybody else who is more deserving of this honor right now, even if I don’t necessarily agree with the particular clips that were singled out.

Riding GaGa’s coattails is Beyonce, who was lucky enough to have two major collaborations with the singer, which scored her a total of eight nominations between “Video Phone” and “Telephone”. Really, “Video Phone” shouldn’t be getting nominated for anything other than an AVN Award, but whatever.

As usual, the majority of rest of the nominations were crap (3OH!3 featuring Kesha for “My First Kiss” – I rest my case). A lot of big names in pop were snubbed (too many to mention), but MTV did manage to forcibly inject Florence + the Machine in there with four nominations to try give the show a little credibility, which was an unexpected but welcome surprise.

I kind of figured out that the VMAs were trash when they gave my girl Britney all those awards to coincide with her comeback, when for the previous decade she hadn’t won anything. Girl you know I love you, but you did not deserve all those damn awards for “Piece of Me”!

Check out the full list of nominees here.

Best Coast wish you were their “Boyfriend”.

Posted in New Music, Uncategorized on August 3rd, 2010 by The Prophet

I was browsing the wonderful Pop Slags earlier today when I came a cross a post on Californian indie band Best Coast. They’ve been languishing on my “must check out” list for months now, so I took the time to listen to the opening track “Boyfriend” from their just-released debut ‘Crazy For You‘.

The result: Amazing.

The melancholy tune has Best Coast lead singer Bethany crooning over a crush and listing her inadequacies over some retro Cali-rock. A little like Kate Nash’s amazing “Do Wah Do”, but not as uplifting lyrically.

The other girl is not like me / She’s prettier and skinnier / She has a college degree / I dropped out when I was seventeen / If only I could get her out of the picture / Then he would know how much I want him

Story of my life! Except for the fact that I’m already incredibly skinny, and dropped out at sixteen – not seventeen.

Check it out below. Best Coast’s debut Crazy For You is on iTunes now.

Another day, another rumored Britney collaboration.

Posted in Uncategorized on August 2nd, 2010 by The Prophet

Those of you suffering from Britney Spears withdrawals in the five seconds that it’s been since I last mentioned her can breathe easy thanks to this pointless Britney megapost.

  • As usual, Britney was spotted running to Starbucks again. She’s back to not wearing a bra, but at least her weave has been fixed since this disaster.
  • Well known Britney demo queen Myah Marie has been in the studio writing and recording some new Britney demos with Jon Asher and Beau Dozier.
  • “Rich (Fake it Till You Make It) singer-songwriter Lolene has been asked to pen a song for Britney, but she loves it so much that she’s contemplating keeping it for herself. Lolene has already written for Lindsay Lohan and Christina Milian in the past, and she’s well connected with Dr Luke, Fernando Garibay, David Guetta and Danja, so I’m assuming the song has a big name attached to it.
  • No release date for the single or album has been confirmed yet. Speculation continues to bounce between late 2010, and first quarter 2011.

That’s all for now.

Margo calls the shots in new music video.

Posted in Uncategorized on July 28th, 2010 by The Prophet

The Margo news has been flowing thick and fast over the past few days. First we were blessed with a new interview from the singer-songwriter-musician, followed by two brand new songs, and now she’s gone and unleashed her first promo music video “I Call the Shots”.

Looking every inch of a total rockstar, “I Call the Shots” has the self-proclaimed “style queen” causing havoc on the streets of L.A. After treating a local corner store like her own personal rehearsal room and using the L.A. pavement like a runway, Margo takes to the rooftops to give her guitar a real workout — letting everybody know just who exactly calls the shots around here.

The fashion. The style. The aggression. The confidence. The hair. The music. Margo is just so f-ing fierce. Seriously, this woman is giving me everything I need right now and single handedly bringing back my favorite era of pop music – the eighties.

If she’s this good with just a cheap promo video and a few leaked songs, then I can’t imagine the heights that Margo could reach with a Rihanna-machine behind her.
