Here’s a new artist that I’ve been meaning to post for the longest time now, but her MP3’s are virtually impossible to find so I’ve held off until now, finally caving in.
Sky Ferreira a 17-year-old singer, songwriter, model, L.A. party girl and all around modern day Lolita. She got her break after contacting Swedish production duo Bloodyshy & Avant through MySpace when she was just 15, and after hearing her demo the Toxic hitmakers took her under their wing, turning Sky into their protege and helping her land a record deal with EMI.
She’s now been working on her debut album for the past 2-3 years with an eclectic all-star cast that needs to be seen to believed. On board are of course Bloodshy & Avant, as well as Linda Perry, Dallas Austin (TLC, Gwen Stefani), Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, Florence & The Machine, Sam Sparro), Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Kylie Minogue, All Saints), Josh Abraham (Courtney Love, 30 Seconds to Mars), Klas Åhlund (Robyn, Britney Spears), Nicole Morier (Britney’s “Heaven on Earth” and “Mmm Papi”), Colin Munroe and Neon Hitch (Ke$ha “Blah Blah Blah”).
Sky’s album doesn’t have a release date yet, but we could hear her first single by March. She’s also been tight-lipped about the sound she’s going in, but from what I’ve pieced together from various information it’ll be a mixture of indie dance-pop, electro-rock and edgy pop in the vein of Britney’s Blackout.
With her singing and songwriting abilities combined with her unique style and amazing team of collaborators I think that Sky will easily be one of the most exciting new artists of 2010.
As I said before her MP3’s are virtually impossible to come by, and the songs she has up on her MySpace are apparently not a reflection of what her album will sound like, but I’ll give you a few things to listen to so you can get an idea of her vibe.
First check out her beautiful cover of Miike Snow’s (Bloodshy & Avant’s band) ballad “Animal” by clicking here, then check out the Greg Kurstin produced surfy 60’s-inspired “Femme Fatale” over at her MySpace by clicking here.
