About to Blow… Florrie.

Posted in New Artist, New Music on August 16th, 2010 by The Prophet

Florrie is one of those artists that I’ve been meaning to do a ‘new artist’ post on for a few months now, but have just been either too lazy or too forgetful to actually bother following through with. Just when I thought my Florrie post would fade into oblivion with my never-published Florence + the Machine concert review, the girl drops two brand new songs in one week, finally giving me the motivation to get off my ass and earn those Google Adsense dollars.

The 21-year-old Brit got her start after being hired as a drummer for production powerhouse Xenomania, which led to gigs with Girls Aloud, The Pet Shop Boys and more. She quickly worked her way up through the ranks at Xenomania, going from drummer, to singer, to songwriter, eventually becoming a full fledged a programmer and remixer.

After conquering Xenomania, Florrie turned her talents over to herself, and started working on her own music. She quickly found her partner in crime in French disco DJ Fred Falke, and with Xenomania in tow, she started cranking out a series of future-smashes.

The most interesting part of Florrie’s story is that, not only is she not signed to a label, but she currently has no plans to make it happen, either. Her plan is to simply continue creating killer tunes, throwing them online for free, and then watching her fanbase grow.

All those other new girls I’ve posted on recently… Well, I’ll just say that Florrie is every bit as good as them, if not infinitely better.

So far Florrie’s had a handful of tracks out, and even more remixes, but I can’t flood this post with everything she’s ever done, so I’ve selected two of her best older tunes and paired them with her two latest releases from this week.

The first of the two new efforts, “Give Me Your Love”, was accurately described by the MuuMuse blog as “as much of a solid disco smash as it is an indie-rock track in disguise” — a perfect description. The second, “You Wanna Start Something”, begins with a funky guitar riff, before exploding into a Girls Aloud-esque blaze of glory on the chorus.

Florrie is really, really amazing. Oh, I forgot to mention that she even remixes her own songs. So cool.

RedOne launches new record label with Mohombi’s “Bumpy Ride”.

Posted in New Artist, News on August 11th, 2010 by The Prophet

I don’t know if you’ve heard the latest news yet, but producer RedOne has been given his own record label by Universal. Apparently, he’s done with all the “fast food writing” now, and is hoping that his new label will bring back “real music” like “Bruce Springsteen or The Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan”.

Contradicting everything that RedOne just said is “Bumpy Ride” — the first single from his label’s first signee Mohombi (pictured above).

When is comes to actually describing his music, RedOne either has absolutely no self-awareness, or he’s just completely full of shit, but what he does know is how to craft a hit, and “Bumpy Ride” is definitely hit. I wanted to act like I was too cool to enjoy yet another one of RedOne’s recycled tunes, but I’d be lying if I tried to pretend like I wasn’t loving the hell out of “Bumpy Ride”. It only took me two listens until my Swiss cheese brain started scheduling in time for me to start learning that stupid dance that Mohombi does on the chorus!

You can stick Mohombi next to all the new music from Usher, Jason DeRulo, Taio Cruz, Enrique and Sean Kingston. It all sounds the frickin’ same, but it’s still hideously catchy.

Now, with that said, can the person who gave RedOne a record label please be shot?

Sunday Girl loses her “Self Control”.

Posted in Music Videos, New Artist on July 19th, 2010 by The Prophet

There’s not a whole lot of info floating around the world wide web on up & coming singer-songwriter Sunday Girl (I think she’s supposed to be really mysterious or something), but you may already be familiar with her work from her single “Four Floors”, or more likely, its very popular Diplo Remix.

The waify songstress popped up again this week by premiering the official music video for her latest single “Self Control”, which is a cover of the 80s Laura Branigan hit of the same name. Sunday Girl can’t match the retro-charm and piercing vocals of Branigan’s original, but she does give the song a sleek makeover with a much darker vibe, and an interesting, mumbled vocal delivery over some seriously icy italo disco beats.

Check it out below.

ABOUT TO BLOW: Kerry Brothers protégé Andra hits the scene.

Posted in New Artist on July 13th, 2010 by The Prophet

Unless you’ve been following me since my blogspot days and have a really good memory, then you’ve probably forgotten all about the new artist post I did Alexandra Govere (now re-named to the much snappier Andra). If so, I’ll refresh your memory by using some handy bullet points to re-introduce you to the next big thing, andto  illustrate why she’s better than you (and me).

  • She was born and bred in rural Zimbabwe, where she grew up with no running water or electricity.
  • Founded her own successful charity The Kijana Project at the age of 12 to assist AIDS orphans.
  • Was the youngest person in history to compete on the Zimbabwean National Artistic Gymnastics Team, then broke Zimbabwean and African gymnast records which she still holds today.
  • Was freakin’ KNIGHTED at the age of 14 for her humanitarian efforts.
  • Finished high school at 14, then attended Stanford to study Civil Engineering and Sociology — left in her senior year at age 18 to pursue music.
  • Is an accomplished ballerina and teaches dance.
  • On top of all this, she’s really hot.
  • May be the perfect woman.

Andra’s talent was recognized by Kerry Brothers Jr, who I’m sure you all know as the writing and production partner of Grammy-winning wig snatcher Alicia Keys. Under Kerry’s mentorship, Andra has been writing and recording music for the past few years, and is now finally ready to release her first mixtape Love is for Suckaz.

The mixtape will be out in about a week, but until then you can get a sneak peak with “White Swans”  and “Credit Card”. The Lupe Fiasco-assisted “White Swans” has Andra playing a sugar mama who realizes that money can’t buy happiness, while “Credit Card” has her blasting a superficial gold digger. Don’t worry though — I’ve heard the mixtape, and she sings about other things outside of the financial realm.

Andra’s album will probably end up being a bit different to the music you’re hearing now, but the mixtape is a great warm of what’s to come. Check out “White Swans” and “Credit Card” below, and then keep an eye out for news of the full tape which I’ll post when it drops.

About to Blow: Margo.

Posted in New Artist, New Music on July 4th, 2010 by The Prophet

Since news has been so slow recently, I thought I’d take the time to introduce you to an up & coming pop artist by the name of Margo.

Born in Toronto but based in New York, Margo (formerly known as M. Audio) is a talented singer-songwriter-musician, with a sound that that’s heavily influenced by 80′s pop. I don’t mean just a few elements of the 80′s here and there either – Margo’s music is straight up Prince, Sheila E, Kylmaxx and Mary Jane Girls,  but with a modern twist of electronic-pop, similar to some of Goldfrapp’s work.

Adding further weight to the 80′s references, my beloved Blender attended Margo’s first showcase recently, where they labeled her: “The female Prince of the new millennium.”

Tough shoes to fill, but if you listen to her music and watch her perform then you can see why they made the comparison.

Since Margo is so new on the scene there’s not a whole lot of news out on her just yet, but you can check out her first song “Cover of a Magazine” below.

The funky throwback was produced by the Jaccko & Justin, but Margo has also been in the studio with the Stereotypes, who I’m sure you all remember from Danity Kane’s top ten hit “Damaged”. The song is streaming on Margo’s official website, and as of now it seems to be the only mastered track available from her, but I have a feeling that we’ll be hearing a lot more from her soon.

You can also check out Margo in action performing at her first showcase, which was held back in May. She bangs out some pretty incredible songs (I need that “Grapevine” tune like now), and even rocks out on an electric guitar with a killer solo. She actually plays it to – it ain’t no Rockstar 101.

If the music on her album is along the lines of all this material, then I’m pretty damn excited for her album. Margo’s got the looks, individuality, talent, style, and performance skills to really make it big.

About to Blow: Graffiti6 – “Annie You Save Me”.

Posted in New Artist on June 30th, 2010 by The Prophet

Graffiti6 are a new musical duo out of England who are about to blow up, so you all better be good little boys and girls and pay attention to this post.

Graffiti6 are made up of two parts: An incredibly attractive lead singer, Jamie Scott, and a less attractive but very talented producer, Tommy D. Jamie’s been hanging around the indie circuit for years now, but has also made some money penning songs for artists like Enrique Iglesius and JLS. Tommy on the other hand has been much more successful, producing tracks for A-list pop artists like Kylie Minogue and Janet Jackson, while overseeing the careers of KT Tunstall and Corrinne Bailey Rae.

I guess the pair got lonely on their own, because now they’ve come together to form their own little duo. Their sound has a bit of psychedelica, but mixed with indie-rock, a little electronica, and some R&B/Soul which comes directly from Jamie.

Recently(ish) they premiered the official music video for their first single “Annie You Save Me”. It’s a brilliant song, and reminds me a little bit of a poppier Gorillaz song.

Did I mention how hot the lead singer is yet? Oh, the nasty and depraved things I’d do to him if I had the chance.

Check it out below, and then listen to the rest of their music on MySpace.

BC Jean debuts new music on MySpace.

Posted in New Artist, New Music on June 23rd, 2010 by The Prophet

You may remember the talented singer-songwriter BC Jean as the girl who penned Beyonce’s hit ‘If I Were a Boy’, and then following drama that ensued when reports emerged that the Knowles clan had snatched the song off BC, which she had been hoping to release herself at some point.

Well, BC may have been another poor and innocent victim of the Knowles’ deceitful ways, but the whole drama scored her a publishing deal with Universal and a record deal with J Records, and she’s been working on her debut album ever since.

We haven’t heard much from BC since she announced her deal early last year, but now she’s given her fans a treat by posting three new demos — ‘Used’, ‘Break Up Sex’ and ‘You’re a Guy’ — up on her official MySpace page.

‘Used’ is a soulful and melodic pop-rock ballad that really showcases BC’s unique and raspy voice, which we first heard on the original version of ‘If I Were a Boy’ – to me it’s the best song of the three.

‘Break Up Sex’ has a harder bassline and picks up the pace with a fist-pumping chorus and some racier lyrics, with BC chanting, “Break up sex, yeah break up, break up!”.

The last song, ‘You’re a Guy’, is a very solid, but standard radio-friendly pop-rock tune. Any top forty female could probably sing it, but BC’s passionate vocal delivery paired with the fact that she actually wrote the lyrics elevates the song and gives it some more authenticity.

As I said before, these songs are just demos, but they provide a very promising preview of what we can expect when BC releases her album later this year. So far she’s been in the studio with Dallas Austin, Toby Gad, The Matrix and many more, so her album should definitely be one to look for. The first single is currently due out this Summer.

Take a listen to the tracks below.

Daisy Dares You.

Posted in New Artist on June 6th, 2010 by The Prophet

Before you start on me, yes, I know I am a million years late on this artist, but I only just discovered her last week by mistake on Last.fm so I thought I’d puke out a post for any others who have been living in ignorance like myself.

British singer-songwriter Daisy Dares You first garnered attention last year when a bidding war between major labels broke out to sign her, followed by the critics who came crawling and labeled her as a new artist to watch in 2010.

Now at the tender age of 17, Daisy has signed to Jive and released her first single “Number One Enemy” earlier this year. The song peaked briefly at #13, and now she’s preparing to drop her next single “Rosie”.

Daisy co-writes her own music, pens her lyrics and plays guitar and keyboards. Right now she’s somewhat of a Sky Ferreira – a rebellious pop star with a slight indie edge – but with the potential to turn into a Kate Nash, or a rockier, more talented Lily Allen.

Her album is due out later this year. If you haven’t already, check out “Number One Enemy” and “Rosie” below.

New girl Lissie premieres “When I’m Alone” music video.

Posted in Music Videos, New Artist on June 6th, 2010 by The Prophet

If you’ve been paying attention to any of the classy music blogs over the past few months then you’ve probably already come in contact with a Lissie post or two. The alt-country/rock singer-songwriter has been building up quite the buzz lately, mainly thanks to her critically acclaimed debut EP ‘Why You Runnin‘, which has won her a bunch of celebrity fans from Ellie Goulding and Band of Horses.

She’s now passed the EP stage and is about to release her debut album ‘Catching a Tiger’ later this month, but first you need to check out her first single “When I’m Alone”.

Unlike the traditional, old-school sounds of her EP, Lissie’s “When I’m Alone” has a bit more of a pop sheen to it, but don’t worry – she hasn’t gone all Taylor Swift on us. Think Stevie Nicks or even Sheryl Crow, but slightly more contemporary.

With an album right around the corner, Lissie is definitely a new talent to watch out for. Oh, and if you don’t like anything outside of pop music, then Lissie’s brilliant take on Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance” may be of interest to you. Just click here.

Australia get a trashy girl group to call their own: Scarlett Belle!

Posted in Music Videos, New Artist on June 3rd, 2010 by The Prophet

After all the drama surrounding trash like The Pussycat Dolls, Girlicious and the flood of other flop girl groups recently, I was getting a little disappointed that my own country didn’t have a crappy girl group to call their own.

Luckily my prayers have now been answered thanks to Australia’s groundbreaking new musical duo Scarlett Belle; two former reality TV contestants who couldn’t make it as solo stars so they joined forces to conquer the charts together!

I’ll give you a quick history on the group first: Regan, the blonde, is the talented one who writes the songs and plays guitar. She was a contestant on Australian Idol, she was eliminated, she disappeared, and now she’s back. That’s basically it.

The brunette, Tamara, is the one who really got the duo going. She was part of a manufactured group called Scandal’us who won the second series of reality TV show Popstars back in 2001, but instead of fading into obscurity like her bandmates did once their 15 minutes were up, she was smart enough to marry one of the judges on the show, Kyle Sandilands. Turns out that Tamara struck gold because Kyle just so happens to be Australia’s biggest (and most controversial) radio host, as well as a major TV personality to.

Using his connections, Kyle tried to launch Tamara as a solo artist a few years back, but the pair were eaten alive by the Australian media and Kyle was accused of pulling some unethical strings to to get his radio network to put Tamara’s records on heavy rotation.

Tamara subsequently flopped, dusted herself off, met Regan, formed Scarlett Belle, signed with Def Jam, got dropped, came back to Australia and now here we are with their first single “Closure”.

The beat sounds like it was stolen straight from Keri Hilson’s “Knock You Down” and the rest of song sounds like every top forty hit you heard last year, mashed all into one, but it is hideously catchy and if you give it a listen the damn repetitive chorus will get stuck in your head like a broken record.

Scarlett Belle are coming for some major wigs this year. First Karina Bradley’s, then Girlicious’, and after that who knows what the future will hold!

New Boys on the Block: Blake McGrath and Mike Posner.

Posted in Music Videos, New Artist on May 28th, 2010 by The Prophet

With Chris Brown turning into yesterday’s news and Justin Timberlake on a never ending musical break, it’s time that we got some new eye candy to fill the male pop star void which has been glaringly empty for a while now. And no, Justin Bieber doesn’t count.

First up is professional dancer, choreographer and all around sexpot Blake McGrath, who you may already know from So You Think You Can Dance, as well as JLo’s MTV series Dancelife.

He’s now pursuing a career in music with the release of his first single “The Night”, an addictive urban-pop jam which saw it’s official video premiere last month in Blake’s native Canada.

Blake can’t sing to save his life, but what he lacks in vocal prowess he makes up for in the looks department. Think the male Rihanna and Cassie, but with much better dancing.

Both Blake’s looks and unmatchable moves are on full display in the slick and stylish video for “The Night”, which could best be described as a sexy cross between Janet Jackson and Adam Lambert.

“The Night” is on Canadian iTunes now, with another single set to follow soon.

The other newcomer is singer-songwriter-producer Mike Posner, who first built up some major buzz with a few mixtape releases, and is now on the cusps of becoming the next big thing thanks to the success of his first single “Cooler Than Me”, which this week reached a new peak of #40 on the Hot 100.

The Justin Timberlake comparisons are inevitable, but the trippy-pop of “Cooler Than Me” and Mike’s unique voice make him instantly recognizable amongst his contemporaries.

The talented 22-year-old is incredibly ambitious, writes and produces his own stuff and has his debut album dropping later this year via J Records. Mike definitely has what it takes to become a major force in the music industry, and who knows, maybe the competition will spur JT out of retirement.

Check out Blake McGrath and Mike Posner’s music video’s below the cut.
