Carrie Underwood surpasses Kelly Clarkson as biggest selling Idol
The original Idol Kelly Clarkson has just lost her crown as the biggest selling American Idol in the States, with country crooner Carrie Underwood edging in this week to take the top spot.
Since hitting the music scene in 2003 Kells album sales total 10,428,000, with her highest seller being 2004′s Breakaway which sold six million copies in the US. Her latest album All I Ever Wanted has now reached 800k, but looks to go higher with the continuing success of it’s single “Already Gone”.
Underwood on the other hand has only released three albums since winning the show in 2005, but her total sales are 10,539,000. Her biggest seller is her debut Some Hearts which sold over 7 million copies in the States and holds the record for the best-selling female country debut of all time. Her third album Play On was released early last month and has already sold 656k.
Kelly fans don’t need to worry though because Kelly is still the highest selling American Idol worldwide with over 22 million albums sold.
I’m a massive Carrie fan so happy for her, but Kelly will always be my favourite. Girlfriend has gotten me through some major break ups before!

i love them both and im really happy for carrie. ive only gotten into carrie recently and im shocked that i never listened to her before. how does “play on” stack up to her previous albums? i’ve heard its not as good and im nervous about listening to it.

martha, you need to shut the f*** up; really. Kelly does not need to change her body image. Not selling 2 million records does not mean she is a failure. What ultimately matters is that she is making a good living out of her singing career, she can sing and she is happy.

Some people are trying to say that “Play On” is not that good of an album (Martha) but they apparently haven’t been keeping track of its ratings. The Album debuted at #1 and the first two singles that have been released went to #1. And she still has some great song that will be released. “Undo It” will be the next single released and it too should go to #1… I am not here to argue but I thought I’d post some facts rather than just uneducated opinions….
As for (Martha’s) other comments about the “Depth” of the songs on “Play On” and there being no comparable “Power Ballads”…. “Temporary Home” is just as “Deep” as “So Small” and “What Can I Say” is a great “Power Ballad”. “Change” and “Unapologize” are also great songs that are both “Deep” and “Powerful”. This was/is a great album and nobody can deny its successful ratings….
