Britney, Justin, and Amy score big in The Times top 100 pop albums of the noughties…

Influential paper The Times has just compiled their list of the “Top 100 Pop Albums of The Noughties”, with Radiohead’s Kid A taking the top spot. Other artists on the list include Missy Elliot, Paul McCartney, The White Stripes, Bruce Springsteen, M.I.A., Mos Def, Madonna, Jill Scott, Beck, Fleet Foxes, Kanye West, P.J. Harvey, David Bowie, and Bjork.

Amy Winehouse managed to place #2 with her critically acclaimed sophomore album Back to Black, whilst Jay-Z’s hip-hop classic The Blueprint sat at #67.

The most surprisingly entries however belonged to some of pop musics biggest stars, with Girls Aloud’s Tangled Up ranking #62, Justin Timberlakes first solo album Justified at #32, and Britney Spears’ Blackout almost topping the list at #5.

Some pop divas that were noticeably absent from the list included Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Christina Aguilera.

I’ve always rated those albums as the best from the artists in question, so I’m glad that somebody finally agrees with me!

It’s nice to see a critics list that manages to blend commercial pop releases with lesser known artists and indie acts. You can check out the full list by clicking here.

What albums do you think deserved to make the cut?

  1. NYC1 Says:

That’s right bitches. Beyonce wishes she could make an album as daring, edgy and amazing like Blackout. Instead she’s shitting out the same old generic ghetto garbage with no substance. So glad The Times ( A credible paper ) didn’t put her on this list.

    Blackout = Flawless.

  2. The Prophet Says:

It’s a pretty big deal for someone like Britney to rate #5 on this list, miles ahead of much more respected and credible artists.

    Blackout deserves it!

  3. AalexisR Says:

    Can’t disagree.

  4. m.i.k.e. Says:

Blackout is incredible, but i dont think they would rate it so high lol
i think there are some albums missing like Songs In A Minor by the great Alicia Keys, The Emancipation Of Mimi by Mariah, even Stripped by Christina Aguilera should’ve made the cut

  5. tupey Says:

Dignity should be on this list.

  6. ShinyGlam Says:

All for Girls Aloud making a lovely entry, but Chemistry is their true crowning glory. Would have loved to see that on the list as well.

  7. Lupe Says:

I pretty much agreed with the whole list.

Its nice to see a paper keeping it a little real instead of going with the same commercial garbage like many of lists.

There’s quite a few amazing yet very uncommercial albums on the list which surprised me.

Flight of the Conchords made the list !!
    I fucking love that show!

And i dont think any of Beyonces albums have been good enough to make the list.
Dangerously In Love was the closest she came to offering something new to the table.

  8. Andres Says:

like you say I miss a x-tina and janet on the list also mj, but whatever I like most of the list specially muse, radiohead, the white stripes, empire of the sun and goldfrabb.

@Lupe, dangeously in love is crap!!, her best album to the date is B’ Day is funk, rock n’ roll, soul, R&B, pop, dance all in one.

  9. Lupe Says:

Haha nooo Andres you’ve got it wrong!
I think with Dangerously In Love it had some really amazing standout songs (Crazy In Love, Baby Boy, Dangerously In Love, Naughty Girl…) but the rest of the songs were just fillers which let it down.

With Bday it didn’t really have any amazing standout songs but it was consistent.
But i just found the album very average. It didn’t help that every song was rammed down our throats!

I dont think Beyonce has made any standout songs like she did on Dangerously In Love. I think Crazy In Love was epic where as Deja Vu… well !

  10. The Prophet Says:

    B day is horrible!

No Joke I bought it, hated it, gave it away to these girls at work who wanted it then, then a few days later they brought i back in going “wow jacques this album is really crappy you can have it back”.

This list is awesome because it mixes commercial with non-commercial. Some lists are garbage because ALL the people on it are commercial, whereas some others EXCLUDE all mainstream music. This list has the best of both worlds.

  11. HEALTHY BLACK QUEENS Says:

Girls Aloud above Beyonce, Aguilera and Carey? We get it! Cheryl Cole is the second coming, now can we return to actual talent please!

  12. da vinci Says:

LoL @ Prop for them bringing you the CD back!!
I took my Bday back to bestbuy and lied in told them it keep skipping so can i just get another CD’ they didn’t buy it so unfortunately I’m still stuck with it but it made ahella coaster

  13. divatude Says:

the list is a bit biased i guess but w/e

  14. The Prophet Says:

    lmao @ Da vinci!

  15. jeff Says:

WHERE THE FUCK IS BORN TO DO IT????????ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME?

  16. The Prophet Says:

    I agree Jeff!

  17. N. Beezy Says:

Albums I believed deserved to be up there…

    - The Way I See It by Raphael Saadiq

    - Complex Simplicity by Teedra Moses

    - 19 by Adele

    - The E.N.D. by Black Eyed Peas (I’m sorry but I loved this CD! It’s fresh on it’s way to defining the start of the ’10s sound and you can’t deny it’s success)

    - Be by Common

    - A Girl Can Mack by 3LW (k not really but it’s a guilty pleasure)

    - St. Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkely

    - Mind, Body, and Soul by Joss Stone

    - After the Storm by Monica

    - The First Days of Summer – Noah and the Whale

    - Attention Deficit by Wale

  18. Steveroni Says:

    I don’t understand Bjork.
    whats her appeal.

  19. Johnta Says:

This list sucks donkey balls big time, Lmao @ Blackout being at #2. That just shows what a load of crap this list is.

  20. The Prophet Says:

    #5 not number #2.

  21. DEVON Says:

It’s pop music and yes, Blackout deserves to be up there (although I like In The Zone a LOT more than Blackout). This is a very good list. We are not talking about vocalists, depth, or anything like that, we are talking about pop and pop stars and everyone on this list and their albums are all good examples of pop at its finest.

  22. Dre Says:

this list has nothing to do with Pop music. this list is bogus. Let’s wait for a real POP magazine to rate this decade. Half those artists are just there. and you’ve gotta be smoking something if you think the way they are. they are missing some really incredible albums that changed POP culture. First we’ve gotta define Pop. Next weve gotta look at the many changes Pop has been through this past decade. Then we compile a list of note worthy albums and music that has, in fact, changed it. I respect the fact that they’ve used some lesser known artists, but 1, that’s not pop, and 2 the popular music that they included wasn’t deserving of their position.

  23. The Prophet Says:

You’re just jealous that GaGa isn’t on it!

  24. Andy Says:

Come on gaga is crap her album wouldnt even made the list even if it was released 3 years ago.

it’s so nice to see Britney getting recognition, before her breakdown no one even bothered to give her some recognition, a bit weird. Blackout should be higher IMO, I think it defenetly is the best album of the decade, I just can’t get over that album.

    LMAO @ mad Beyonce stans!

  25. Dre Says:

but you’ve gotta admit, no matter how much you dislike gaga, that her album has changed pop music. She is the future of pop. i’m not the biggest rihanna fan, but i think her music is very influential. and as much as i LOVE blackout, u cant be serious that an album like that made the list and some of the best pop albums of the past few years didnt make it. seems like this mag is just throwing names on just to say that they have a mainstream artist on the list. and funny, i didn’t see much R&B music on this list (even though a bunch of today’s biggest hits are influenced by Hip Hop and R&B)

  26. The Prophet Says:

Well they had the main urban stuff like Amy Winehouse, Jay-Z etc.

GaGa hasn’t changed the face of pop, well her MUSIC hasn’t anyways, but I guess her image and performance has definitely made an impact. The Fame lacks the edge of blackout, and the substance of other big pop albums.

Obviously there were good albums left off this list, which is ALWAYS going to happen, but this was one of the best lists I’ve seen. They left off some great pop albums like Stripped, born to do it, and Kaleidoscope, but they still included other great ones. I didnt really see any crap on here that made me be like “OMG HOW DID THAT MAKE THE LIST”.

  27. Luke Says:

Madonna is at #29 with Confessions on a dencefloor..

Anyway, I still think that Britney’s best and the most elaborated album is In The Zone…

  28. leah Says:

‘Blackout’ is the BEST BRITNEY ALBUM EVERRRR. that album was soooooooo sikkk, nd unfortunatley sooooo underated! still remains my fav album of 0’7

  29. N. Beezy Says:

Kaleidoscope was technically released in 1999, does it qualify? That’s one of my favorites though

  30. N. Beezy Says:

And I totally blocked out that this was a POP music list, my baaaaaad! I guess some of my albums wouldn’t have been up there hahaha

  31. prince Says:

this list is wack dangerously in love was a great album what about aaliyah’s last album brandy’s aphrodisiac or kelis tasty, usher confessions , no alicia keys or mariah carey Emancipation of Mimi this magazine can kiss my ass i’m bout to make my own list

  32. Lisa Says:

Where’s M!ssundaztood and Stripped? Those two albums along with Justified defined pop for this decade. I don’t understand how this being a UK site would forget M!ssundaztood and Stripped when they were so successful and the best.
