Ameriie talks ‘Cymatika’, plans independent release

Pacific Rim (haha, rim) caught up with Ameriie at a celebrity poker tournament in Hollywood last week, where they gave her a good grilling on the status of her upcoming album Cymatika Vol. 1.
First off, it looks like the album will be receiving an independent release through Amerie’s company Feenix Rising, rather than a joint-release with Def Jam like 2009′s In Love & War.
Vocally, Ameriie says she’ll be singing with an “androgynous approach” because “on a spiritual level, we don’t really have a gender.” So far she’s collaborated with acclaimed Korean Hip-Hop artist Tiger JK and his wife Tasha, while Riley Urick and Andre Harris are handling the production. When asked if there would be any other collaborations on the album, the 33-year-old said, “It’s harder to find collaborations on this project because of the subject matter, because what I’m talking about is so particular… It’s not just like, ‘here’s a song and we’ll throw anyone on it,’ it really has to match.”
The good news is that a return to “1 Thing” hitmaker Rich Harrison will “definitely” happen, but whether or not it will be for Cymatika or a future project is still up in the air.
As far as the exact sonic direction the album will take, Ameriie told Rap-Up last month that we can expect to hear “trance, electronic, elements of house, heavy drums—not hip-hop in that sense, but drums that knock—and new wave with classic song structure.” The subject matter is a bit all over the place, with themes including androgyny and new world order, but essentially it’ll be focused on “the human experience” on a “spiritual level“.
Did I hear that correct? An R&B artist being creative and singing about something other than clubbing and relationships? The world must be ending.
With Cymatika about “80% done” according to Ameriie, it shouldn’t be too long until we get to hear her next amazing musical offering.
