[Album Review] T-ara – ‘Day by Day’

With infectious hits like “Bo Peep Bo Peep”, “Lovey-Dovey”, and “Roly Poly”, T-ara has gained a reputation for releasing the kind of addictive pop confections that are impossible to get out of your head, but they’re unfairly overlooked as a group capable of making impressive albums.

Their 2009 full-length debut, Absolute First Album, is still one of the best girl group albums to come out of the pop world in years, while 2010′s Temptastic (and its two unofficial re-releases) remains totally underrated. Even last year’s Black Eyes was a good effort in all of its odd, cheap-ish glory.

For their most recent comeback, T-ara was gracious enough not to pull a Temptastic and drop another repackaged album, instead returning with an all-new original EP, Day by Day.

The album’s lead single and title track, “Day by Day”, is by far the album’s finest moment. More “Cry Cry” than “Lovey-Dovey”, the song sees T-ara going against the current trend of releasing upbeat songs to tie-in with the Korean summer season, instead opting to go down a much darker route with a song that sounds more suited to a chilly winter than the warm summer months.

Produced by Cho Young-soo (“Lies”, “Cry Cry”), the poetic “Day by Day” stands as T-ara’s most organic-sounding single to date, as well as their most hip-hop-leaning since “TTL (Time to Love)”. With extensive rapping from the long-underrated Hwayoung and production built around warm acoustics, percussion, and an enchanting flute riff, “Day by Day” plays like an obvious attempt to cash-in on the enormous success of K-indie acts like Busker Busker and LeeSsang, while still maintaining enough K-Pop flavor to appeal to the group’s usual demographic.

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the flute usage in “Day by Day”, with people calling it a knock-off of Britney Spears’ “Criminal”. This certainly wouldn’t be the first time that T-ara were ‘inspired’ by Britney, but the flute in “Day by Day” sounds closer to a sped-up version of the flute intro from the Led Zeppelin classic “Stairway to Heaven” than it does to Britney’s hit, which is probably where the Pop Princess originally got the idea from, anyway.

The next track, “Holiday”, is a melancholy pop jam with depressing lyrics and a boppy beat, giving it a similar vibe to the group’s debut single, “Lies”. The girls sing about being sad and alone on the holidays, trying to rhyme, “holi, holi, day” with “lonely, lonely, day” on the chorus, which would probably sound ridiculous coming from anyone else but T-ara.

One of the few consistent aspects of the ever-evolving T-ara is that they never do those typical K-Pop ballads that are so often used as filler tracks on a lot of idol albums (*looks at Girls’ Generation*). The group almost comes close to the style on the powerful  “Don’t Leave”, but producer Cho Young-soo keeps the composition mature and unpredictable enough to stop it from sounding syrupy or generic, opening with a synthy, electronic intro, before dropping into a dark hip-hop beat backed by a dramatic orchestra. Hwayoung, Eunjung, and new member Areum provide rapping throughout various point in the song, while the talented Soyeon delivers some of her strongest vocals to date.

The final two songs on the album, “HUE” and “Love Game”, both appeared on T-ara’s recent Japanese album under the titles of “T-ARATiC MAGiC MUSiC” and “Keep Out”.

“Love Game” combines sixties girl rock with dubstep wobbles and synths, making it a nice fit for the album, but “HUE” sticks out like a sore thumb with its cheap techno-pop production. Despite a repetitive “whoa oh oh oh” moment on the post-chorus that gets lodged in your brain, it probably should’ve just been left on Jewelry Box.

Speaking of unneeded things on Day by Day: um, Areum? Now that CCM has finally decided to actually utilize Hwayoung by having her rap on all three of Day by Day‘s new tracks, T-ara feels more complete than ever before, making Areum an unnecessary addition to the group. She may be able to sing slightly better than the non-Soyeon members of T-ara, but she isn’t really doing anything that Eunjung can’t handle. I mean, it’s not like being a better singer than Jiyeon, Qri, and Boram makes Areum the next Hyorin or IU. Right?

“Day by Day” easily ranks up there as one T-ara’s best singles, but the album itself isn’t quite as strong as we’ve heard from the group in the past. It definitely doesn’t come close to Absolute First Album, Temptastic, John Travolta Wannabe, or Funky Town, but it sits comfortably on the level of Black Eyes, and serves as another solid effort in T-ara’s sometimes stellar discography.

Score: 3.25/5

i liked Black Eyes more than i liked this one. Then again, all T-ara releases take a while for me to get used to. I remember i used to hate Yayaya.

AFA always be their best album but never get bored listen to T-ARA songs!

  • cuntley

Disappointed that there was only 3 new songs. Plz stop recycling your music into different languages. They were shown in a studio recording Day By Day in Japanese on their tv show. If it’s their next Japanese single I will cut a bitch…

OMG I couldnt believe you would do an album review for k-pop but not for western musics :O

  • tjoz

Im waiting for Mirage. Of each ‘repackage’ era T-ara have the first release is just testing the waters for a much more solid effort the second time around.

I dont think they will ever top their first album. It still holds against time which is very rare not only in Kpop land but in pop general.

I disagree with the “Hue” part! I think “Hue” is a great track, CCM has made a good decision putting it in this album. I love the cheapness and addictiveness of it. It kinda gives me 80s feeling, love it!

Meanwhile, I think “Holiday” should’ve been given to 5dolls instead, it really suits the music from their first and only mini album. As a QUEEN’S, I can’t help myself but loving it. But as a neutral judger, “Holiday” is soo trash and all over the place.

Btw, I’m still deceased over the fact that they’re saying ‘Lonely day’ and all this time, I always thought it’s another T-english ‘Lolly day’. LMFAO!

He does western music review when the album is either really good or crazily hyped and anticipated.

  • theprophetblog

Pop albums in general (east or west) are usually really bad and only have a few good songs set aside for singles and all the rest crap, so I rarely do album reviews in general coz I can’t be bothered having to listen to so much rubbish in order to review.

The types of albums that are good that I’d like to review don’t really match the music I post on this site

  • maknae23

Again, this album is such a waste. Day by day, Holiday and Don’t Leave are very good songs and should be included in a full album instead of an EP. By putting 3 solid songs (Holiday to a lesser extent) with 2 remake songs, it kinda brought down the quality of the EP. I seriously agree that they should really cut down on recycling their songs. (Pointing at you, cheap CCM). But anyway, I am happy that they didn’t do another Roly Poly 2.0, Cry Cry 2.0 or Lovey Dovey 2.0 (although I suspect that Mirage will actually be Lovey Dovey 2.0) and I am grateful for all the effort that T-ara put in to make Day by Day a solid EP.

I kinda wish Eunjung, Hyomin and Jiyeon? had more lines in the EP. I was deprived of Eunjung’s rap but well I guess it’s time for other members to take the spotlight. I still don’t see how Areum serves the purpose of “helping” Soyeon with the vocals cause for me she’s still an unnecessary addition to the group. I actually kinda like her after watching Star Life but I still don’t get it about the members addition.

All in all, Day By Day EP is a good listen and hope they’ll slay everyone again with their upcoming and supposedly flawless Mirage. T-ara <3

“Day by Day” seemed very promising to me at first.. With the teasers, stunning concept photo’s and Jonte’s choreography leaking, I mean, I was SLAYED by this song even before I was in my mothers uterus. But since the music video dropped, I was just utterly bored… the storyline was so predictable. I kinda expected it to upstage “Cry Cry”, but “Cry Cry” is still way better. And since “Day by Day” is “Cry Cry 2.0″, “Mirage” will probably be “Lovey Dovey 2.0″, so i’m just kinda like (unfairly) over this song already and just waiting for “Mirage” to drop ASAP. Day by Day is a GOOD song tho, don’t get me wrong, but but it won’t get as much spins as 2NE1′s and SISTAR’s new singles. Adding to the fact that “Day by Day” will never top the GAON chart, it’s just a complete downer to me. Till “Mirage” droppes i’m gonna pop my pussy to “I Love You”… with a bit of “Loving U” and “Flashback” in between.

And at last, i’m totally afraid that “Mirage” will be the only new song added to the repacked album, just like they did with “Funky Town”, only adding “Lovey Dovey” and “Lovey Dovey” club remix.

When does miss A come back anyway? That makes all this totally irrevelant.

Am I the only person who loves “Hue”? I loved it in Japanese and I like it even more in Korean. “Holiday” and “Love Game” do absolutely nothing for me, but “Don’t Leave” and “Day By Day” totally make up for that. I’ve always appreciated that T-ara tend to take more risks and lean towards the quirkier/edgier side of K-Pop than their contemporaries. People like to peg 2NE1 as the innovators in girl group K-Pop, but I would actually give that title to T-ara what with the constant drastic changes in their concepts, sound, and overall image. I’m hoping now that they’ll be 9-ara, CCM will actually have them release a full second album so that all the girls get their fair share of lines.

Side note: While I don’t mind Areum and think she’s a talented, pretty girl, I agree with you that her addition to the group was totally unnecessary. More EunjUNF, less of everyone else!

Black Eyes is the best T-ara album for me.

  • a_chan

Day By Day is probably my second favourite album from them, quite a bit behind Absolute First Album/Breaking Heart. Don’t Leave is probably my favourite ballad from them, or top 3 at least, and Day By Day has been growing on me a lot. It also helps I think this is the best they’ve ever looked. Idky but I never really got into Temptastic. I still bought it anyway, simply because of the packagaing lol.

On Areum. She’s… fine. She fits in look wise and the vocals are pretty good despite miming her high notes. I’m almost convinced the hair stylists hate her though since she looks a bit of a mess on stage lol. But really, they don’t need her. She doesn’t make any significant difference so far. Other than throwing off the group dynamic they FINALLY settled when Boram and Qri learnt how to perform about six-eight moths ago and CCM gave Hwayoung a verse to rap instead of a line to repeat. Ugh… Hopefully Areum finds a niche soon, like speaking Japanese maybe.

  • FreakyFlyBri

I love that you gave Temptastic some props, that album never got the love it deserved.

As for Day By Day, I agree that it’s about on par with Black Eyes. The three new songs are all excellent, and I like that T-ara decided to go for a more mature route this time around, but yeah, I really wish CCM would stop recycling their music. I’ve come to the realization that we probably won’t ever get a truly original Japanese album from T-ara at this point, and any new music that we DO get will undoubtedly be translated into Korean for release later down the road. Still, the nice thing is that Hue and Love Game sound just as good in Korean as they do in Japanese (if not better) so at least there’s that. And thank GOD that CCM decided not to put a ton of unnecessary remixes on this album. That was JTW/RPIC/Black Eyes/Funky Town’s problem.

As far as Areum’s addition goes, I like her so I’m not going to talk. I think she fits in well with T-ara and I’m pretty sure that with time she’ll prove her worth, kind of like Hwayoung did. It does kind of suck that she’s taking lines that Eunjung would’ve probably gotten had she not been added but at the same time I have noticed that things seem more…fair this time around than they have with their past few releases in terms of line distribution. Maybe CCM’s working on it since they’re probably tired of hearing fans bitch about it (one can only hope).

All in all I’m pleased with the effort, and think the three songs alone are flawless…I would’ve just liked to see a full-length instead, like everyone was speculating it would be anyways. I’m guessing that may be in October now…?

  • FreakyFlyBri

To be honest I think a lot of people are probably feeling this way…people are looking at “Day By Day” as the warmup and “Mirage” as the fire bomb that T-ara will drop on the charts to incinerate the competition. The repackage will probably sell a lot better than DBD too since that seems to be commonplace with them, since most people have realized that T-ara usually releases a repackage a month later anyways and will probably just wait for that to drop instead, lol.

I’m sure we’ll get at least two new songs for the repackage, Funkytown got “Lovey Dovey” and “We Were In Love,” but I could be wrong since Roly-Poly In Copacabana only got the title track as a new song.

I literally think Ahreum is about as basic as basic can get… not to say that she isn’t pretty, but i don’t see her adding anything substantial to T-ara that would warrant me giving a crap about her existence. her high note in day by day is so meh and as if T-ara needed a fourth rapper… is dani supposed to be the fifth? cause that’s just cray. i will say this much: watching ahreum do all the talking during japanese interviews will be kinda cool… i guess. :D

  • http://twitter.com/britneysunicorn nicky

No, I love Hue too. It’s my 2nd favorite on the album after Day BY Day.

  • http://twitter.com/britneysunicorn nicky

Every Kpop group that promotes in Japan I mean

  • http://twitter.com/britneysunicorn nicky

Pretty much every Kpop group releases their Korean singles in Japan though. 2NE1 recorded I Love You in Japanese too. (And English)

  • xxjvo

    Proph?

Why is the short girl still in the group? She’s been there since the begoning and she still is put on the back where she can’t be seen and she hardly ever gets any camera time… I read that they got 3 new members. Are they supposed to be like the new vocalists are some because that really leaves the short girl out. She never could really dance either.

  • FreakyFlyBri

The short girl is Boram, she’s flawless, amazing, a goddess, etc., and your inferences that she should be kicked out have angered me. We will all thank our lucky stars that she continues to grace T-ara with her presence. Good day, sir.

  • takupoi

u managed to remain unbias this time, maybe the absurd rash claim of how t-ara would skull drag 2ne1 made by u and a few others, has gotten 2 u, so now ur all tame and distant. lololololololololol fool

  • takupoi

i also see u deleted ur post regarding how T-ARA’s DAY BY DAY would dominate the summer,. thats rite, eat all the shit up, eat it all up.

  • takupoi

anyways regarding t-ara i thought the album was well put together, especially day by day. despite being slayed by 2ne1 (hard) i commend them for putting such a addictive pop track out.

Quit being such a tool, most of what was said on here was in jest and you look like a fool trying to rehash old shit a week later. Plus you have no reading comprehension, nobody on HERE said T-ara was going to out-perform 2NE1 on their opening week, we all just said T-ara’s song would probably outsell 2NE1′s in the long run.

  • takupoi

in jest? gurl… stop making dubious assumptions, it may have been a jest for a few but i’m pretty a good amt of them was highly sure of themselves. hell even prophet made a post for t-ara’s slayage over 2ne1. but he was wrong, and u noe what that grants me. bragging rights. thats right, bragging rights.
