Adele speaks about her sophomore album!

After the runaway success of her debut album 19, British soul singer Adele has spoken out about her upcoming sophomore album.

I’m writing it at the moment, slowly but surely.

I’m not being rushed, because you’re only as good as your next record. If you get rushed, you can lose that little niche that you’ve created for yourself, whereas if you take your time then you’ll end up delivering.

Obviously I’m a bit scared that there’s new avenues that I want to go down with the sound, but I don’t want to leave behind my lovely fans who might not like the new sound. So I’m a bit wary of that.

Despite being flooded with offers from people eager to work with her, Adele revealed that she’ll stick with Eg White who co-wrote and produced the majority of her debut 19. White has also worked with Duffy, Joss Stone, James Morrison, and will soon appear on Kris Allen’s upcoming album.

I have a producer – but I don’t really want anyone to know who it is in case it flops.

I’m more interested in having a body of work rather than a mish-mash of sounds. I think my first album was a bit of pop, a bit of R&B, a bit of jazz, a bit of wannabe rock and a bit of indie folk. I’ve been listening to a lot of Sade at the moment. I bought all these amazing iconic albums and I’m trying to work out why they have a sound. I’ve been listening to a lot of Back to Black too. I want an Adele sound.

And when asked if there were any new albums she was liking at the moment, Adele mentioned Melanie Fiona and her hit single “Give It To Me Right”. [Source]

Adele’s debut album 19 was released early last year to immense critical acclaim and commercial success. The album was nominated for a Mercury Prize and scored Adele two Grammy Awards. It also spawned the mega-hit “Chasing Pavements”, and eventually went on to sell over 2.2 million copies.

It’s good to know that she’ll be trying new things, whilst still maintaining her core sound. I’m loving this resurgence of soul, and hope it sticks around unlike that new Jazz fad that we had a few years back with Katie Melua and the rest of them.Adele is so talented and unique and I think with the right song she could have another very successful album.

There’s a lot of similar artists to her out right now, from Duffy to Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, Melanie Fiona etc, but at the same time they’re all so vastly different and have their own niche within the soul/R&B/jazz genre that there’s definitely room for them all to have success.

I was worried for Adele for quite a while because I didn’t think she would get the exposure and success her album deserved (to me at least). It finally happened though, and I can’t wait for her next release.
